June 1, 2017 Forty-Fourth Edition

June 1, 2017

TO:  CAL FIRE Local 2881 Members

FROM:  Mike Lopez

Brothers & Sisters,

We are pleased to announce that CAL FIRE Local 2881's goals regarding the issues with the Battalion Chief list were accomplished.

The 7 Battalion Chiefs were reinstated and the Battalion Chief list is again active.
I would like to express my gratitude to the members today who appeared at the hearing to attest the proposed decision was not beneficial for the membership and the department.

I would also like to acknowledge, Gary Messing, Lina Balciunas Cockrell,  Aaron Read, Terry McHale and our Local 2881 Executive Board members for their due diligence in protecting our CAL FIRE firefighters from this unjust action.
I would also like to thank the State Personnel Board for listening to the witness statements and for clearly making the right decision.

Fraternally,
  Mike Lopez

The Pipes & Drums had a great weekend at the Costa Mesa Scottish Fest. They took third place in the March-Air-March event on Saturday, May 27th, against seven great bands. Sunday, May 28th, they took 4th in the March Medley against eight bands; missing 3rd by a point!

The Honor Guard saw a lot of CAL FIRE faces, brothers and sisters from other departments and met some prospective new members.  The CAL FIRE Local 2881 Honor Guard represented the Department and our Local proudly.

As of today, the Grass Valley Air Attack Base (GVAAB) is open for reloading, marking the unofficial start of the 2017 fire season.
