Game On Empowering & Confidence Building
Newsletter Week 4 Chicago
July 18, 2014

Dear Game On! Chicago Families:

What a week it was!!! Before giving you a taste, consider this:

Many of our rising 5th graders chose to play kickball on Monday as one of their afternoon optionals. After an inning, it became apparent that many were generally confused on field positioning. In fact, not only were most who were playing base positions standing directly on the bases, but after throwing out a few queries to the teams, we realized they needed educating on all the positions. Taking the time to halt play (as we generally will do when necessary to teach), we went through all the positions, outfield and infield, where to stand strategically, and WHY. You can imagine that the game boasted better defense from that point on. And, those playing the bases appreciated that they did not have to subject themselves to runners sprinting at them with the ultimate collision weighing heavily on their minds. The game became more fun and the campers more confident in their abilities. Knowledge translated into POWER.

As a side note, some of our kickball players were very educated on the field positions and strategic play. They therefore helped us to teach, an exercise which left them feeling the pride of leadership. A win win for all.

And we move forward...

To enhance your feel for our week, view our photos HERE (our video of the week will return next week) and please read on. Remember calendar previews and reminders are summarized below so don't stop short.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Skills of the week included:

Soccer: Trapping

Basketball: Shooting
LAX: Free Position Shooting
Volleyball: Serve
Softball: Bunting
Tennis: Volleys

Yes, we challenged the more advanced to go that one step further. Yes, we worked closely with the many who had not yet learned. Yes, we permitted all the opportunity to feel progress, thereby increasing confidence and a love for the game.

Finally our Healthier Me topic and discussion revolved around standing your ground and doing what is right despite peer pressure to do otherwise.

As always, if you think this week was great, JUST WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK!

*AFTERNOON PICK UP- Please note that beginning next week we will instruct cars to pull up further west in the pick up line. Our goal is to get as many cars off  of Marine Drive as possible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
