Terry Smith, AIA
Founder & Principal In Charge
Bachelor of Architecture, '93

Mr. Terry Smith, AIA, NOMA is President and Founder of Smith & Company Architects. A former Managing Principal with one of the nation's largest architectural firms, he has served as Project Manager | Project Architect for a diverse range of projects. Terry has more than 20 years of experience in architectural planning and design, has designed more than $400 million dollars in projects, and is the recipient of multiple design awards.

Smith's added experience has been obtained by serving as Vice President of Architecture, Engineering and Construction Services for Texas Southern University. He was working as principal of a major architecture firm when he decided it was time to launch his own firm in 1999, just one year after becoming a registered architect. Within this capacity, he managed more than $150 million in design work. Mr. Smith's ties to his professional and local community run deep. He has served as a board member for numerous professional and community organizations, and in 2008 his firm was recognized as one of the Houston Minority Business Council's Emerging Ten, which recognizes companies that make significant contributions to their industry and community. Pictured below are 2 projects you may be familiar with. To view more of Smith & Company projects copy the link: http://www.sc-arch.com/smith-company-architects-newsletter-fall-winter-2016.

The new PVAMU Welcome Center will serve as the first destination for prospective students and parents when visiting the campus.  The 7,600 SF building will be located near the front lawn of the campus and will be the first building visible by incoming guests to the campus.

FROM THE PEN OF THE PRESIDENT!

NAA President seeks            answers at Texas A&M

After it was made public that Ruth J. Simmons  was to be the 8th President of Prairie View A&M University many of you reached out to me with your concerns regarding the process for her selection as president and the lack of input from Alumni. This past March on behalf of all alumni and as President of the PVAMU National Alumni Association I contacted Chancellor Sharp via email and expressed our desire to be present in the search when the time comes to select the 9th President of Prairie View A&M University. Chancellor Sharp forwarded my email to Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. John Hallmark who then invited me to the campus of Texas A&M. On June 12th we met to discuss the circumstances that led to the hiring of President Simmons and the process for choosing her successor. Ultimately, Chancellor Sharp has the legal right to appoint a president to any A&M System school sans a search committee. Dr. Hallmark shared that a similar situation at A&M Commerce occurred in which the university's president was appointed without a search committee.
T he process for selection of the 9th President of PVAMU should proceed as follows:
1. President Simmons submits her leave date to the A&M System.
2. After the president's leave date has been announced the REGENTS form a search committee.
a. Traditionally, the search committee is comprised of 10-15 persons; 2 regents, 3-4 faculty, the faculty senate president, a staff person, an administrator, a donor, a community person , 2-3 alumni and the student body president.
3. A search firm is hired to seek the best possible candidates.
a. In the 1st month, open meetings
b. In the 2nd month, job announcement
4. The committee will narrow the search from 8 to 3 candidates.
5. Chancellor Sharp and Dr. Hallmark spend a considerable amount of time with the 3 candidates.
6. The names of presidential candidates are NEVER published. All committee members must sign a confidentiality agreement  (Most University Presidents do not want their current institutions to know they are seeking other employment. Although the candidate names are  not disclosed committee members may update constituents regarding the process.)

Go Panthers!

Kimberley
