This month's article is the first of the Qabala portion of the series - 'Chakras and the Tree of Life' - seeking an understanding of the way that we humans interface with the vibrational universe. It summarizes the Ten Sephiroth - the Hebrew Tree of Life.

CHAKRAS AND THE TREE OF LIFE
PART 14 - THE TEN SEPHIROTH
Several cultures throughout history have used the tree as a powerful metaphor to explain the mysteries of reality. In Norse mythology we have the concept of the 'Yggdrasil'. The body of knowledge known as the 'Tree of Life' or the 'Tree of Sephiroth' comes from the school of Hebrew mysticism, the Qabala. Its basic text is the Sepher Yetzirah, or the Book of Formation. Tradition contends that the knowledge contained in this book was handed down to Adam and was preserved through the generations by strict oral ceremonies and ordained storytellers, until it was finally written down, eventually evolving into the Sepher Yetzirah. There is controversy regarding the antiquity of this knowledge. Some contend that much of this information became distorted over the years. (Anyone wishing to learn about the Qabala in more depth is referred to the work of David Godwin, Carlos Suares and many others.)
Much of the information in the original texts, however, seems to make sense and corresponds to other ancient knowledge such as the Tantra. It covers a wide range of topics including the creation of the universe by means of the ten Sephiroth. (A sephirah is a divine emanation or sphere of light). The divine force that fills and contains the universe, the source of all things, is called 'En Soph', corresponding to the concepts of Brahman or Tao. From this primal force came a great emanation, which spawned another emanation, which in turn spawned another, etc. There are a total of ten such emanations, called sephiroth, which divide into seven levels that correspond to the seven chakras.
The first level, corresponding to the crown chakra, is a single sephirah called the 'Crown' (Kether). It represents the original intention to make manifest the universe, and it contains all the other nine 'intelligences'. It corresponds to the Hindu concept of Atman and is considered to be beyond gender, having no male and female aspects. The next level, corresponding to the brow chakra, consists of two sephiroth, the female/right-brained/yin/supernal mother called 'Wisdom' (Binah), and the male/left-brained/yang/supernal father called 'Knowledge' (Chokmah). These first two levels, consisting of three sephiroth, combine to form the 'supernal triad', representing intellectual qualities and the head of the human body.
The next level corresponds to the throat chakra and consists of two sephiroth, 'Mercy' (Chesed) on the left side, and 'Severity' (Geburah) on the right. These two qualities are like opposite sides of the same coin and together they spawn the fourth level - the sixth sephirah, 'Beauty' (Tiphareth) at the heart chakra. One way of understanding this process is to think of it in the context of parenthood. The soft, forgiving quality of mercy, combined with the firm, principled discipline of severity produces a beautiful child. These three sephiroth form the triad that represents moral or ethical qualities and the upper torso and arms/hands of the human body.
Going down to the next level, corresponding to the solar plexus chakra, we have two sephiroth that again represent two extremes of the same aspect. On the creative, intuitive right side we have 'Victory' (Netzach), and on the analytical, linear left side we have 'Splendor' (Hod). These two aspects of manifestation, the inspirational, passive force on the right and the deductive, active force on the left, combine to spawn the next level - the ninth sephirah, 'Foundation' (Yesod) - corresponding to the sacral chakra. These three sephiroth form the triad that represents the physical qualities and the lower torso and legs/feet of the human body.
At the base of all of this is the final level of manifestation, the tenth sephirah, 'Kingdom' (Malkuth) which corresponds to the root chakra. It is closely related to the ninth sephiroth and represents the material world, the physical plane.
