PTSA PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Welcome back, Titan families!

The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time. I am honored to be SMHS-PTSA President and looking forward to a fabulous year. I grew up in San Marino and attended San Marino High myself. My husband Vincent and I feel incredibly lucky to live in this community. It is hard to believe that our son Matthew will be part of the 2017 graduating class!! Our son, Thomas is a Junior and daughter Mary Jane is in 8th grade.

PTSA is wonderful way to stay informed and get involved. I invite you to a PTSA meeting on the third Wednesday of the month (except October, December, and February) at 8:30 a.m. in the College and Career Center. All are welcome to attend and learn what is happening at SMHS and how you can get involved. You can learn about ASB, performing arts, sports, and hear from our knowledgeable Principal, Mary Johnson, who will give you updates and keep you informed on important issues at school and will also keep you abreast of what is going on around the  community.

The PTSA calendar, including meetings scheduled, is posted on the San Marino High School website. Please  CLICK HERE  for the calendar.  We also have an updated SMUSD app, so please download it today from your app store.

There are many other ways to support San Marino High. Yee-Haw!   Our first PTSA event is our Parent Party, "Stage Coach San Marino" on Saturday, September 10.  Or swing the sticks at the annual Golf Tournament at San Gabriel Country Club on April 24. The tradition continues with Grad Night, this year's theme being  . . . Monopoly!! Come join the Grad Night painting parties on Wednesday and Saturdays starting in January.

I look forward to an exciting year.

Thank you, and GO TITANS!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

The opening of the 2016-17 school year opened with a successful day of registration and Freshman Orientation.  The Link Crew, a group of trained students and their outstanding faculty leaders Robbin Rae McCulloch, Laura Ives, Courtney Rushing, and Jose Caire, lead a fun and informative afternoon that helped the incoming class connect with upper class students, feel comfortable with the campus, and have some idea of what makes a student successful at San Marino High School.

We welcomed eight new teachers to the high school, and one very important person, our new Registrar Vanessa Glorae.  Having new staff always gives us a fresh burst of energy and new perspectives.

I have challenged the staff to cultivate curiosity in our classrooms.  If we are to continue bringing Common Core curriculum to life, we must help our students investigate, research, and discover.  Learning is a lifelong skill, and only the curious will keep learning.

I welcome our families and students back and look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night on September 7.

Sincerely,
Mary Johnson
Principal

REGISTRATION DAY(S)

Thank you to all of you who registered on Infosnap before the first day of school!  Because we had almost 90% of the students with completed registrations, we had an incredibly smooth registration process, especially given a few unwelcome Infosnap gitches!  A  HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who donated to the PTSA, the Booster groups, the Visual & Performing Arts and to the school.  Your donations are truly appreciated and help to make our programs better for our kids.

A special shout out to Eric Bergmann for jumping in and putting out any registration fires that came his way.  Another special, special thank you to former  Registrar Kathie Blanton, who came back from retirement to register our kids with a great attitude and smile.  And we cannot forget Stephen Choi who answered Infosnap email questions even at midnight and on Sundays.  Stephen you are the best!

I would also like to say thank you to our registration team!  Eileen Cameron, Chris Pedroza, Pana Gelt, Evelyn Boss, Pat Chan, Anne Alford, and Paula Dunkel.  Your organization and efficiency helped to move hundreds of kids quickly through each of your stations.  Of course we couldn't do it without our army of volunteers!  Thank you to all of you who helped to welcome and process all of our students on registration day or the first day of school: Debbie Agajanian, Ilona Anderson, Cynthia Ary, Kathy Bayle, Carolyn Broderick, Amy Buenabenta, Lainnie Capouya, Gabrielle Carlton, Michele Carter, Brigit Castleman, Yvonne T. Chen, Cynthia Chow, Leslie Clayton, Stacy Conzonire, Dipti Dalal, Mary Daves, Debbie Day, Jennifer Giles, Wendy Gute, Julie Hannan, Glee Hom, Jean Hwang, Lee Kao, Nina Kirkendall, Lucinda Koh, Adrienne Kreindler, Nicole Lee, Julia Li, Leslie Long, Laura MacDonald, Rosa Madrigal, Michelle McBryde, Dina McCall, Alison McCrary, Shannon McDonald, April Muranaka, Marcel Perez, Melissa Short, Leanne Snaer, Kim Spindler, Helen Spitzer, Hal Suetsugu, Amy Tang, Jasmin Tsai, Sylvia Uriarte, Karen Wicke, Janis Tanji Wong, Christina Pink, Jennifer Chen, Robert French, Jennifer Kang, Allie Ye, Michelle Wang, Victoria Petrosyan, Iris Perez

Many of you returned on Monday to continue registration, which was a big help to us all.

And last, but by no means least, another HUGE THANK YOU to Stephanie Perry, Volunteer Coordinator, and so much more. Stephanie's organization, recruitment and guidance were all first class, like the gal she is.

We truly couldn't have done it without each and everyone of you -THANK YOU!
