This weekend of August 20-21, Strawbery Banke Museum hosts a Civil War Encampment on Puddle Dock. The 5th NH Regiment will portray the 2nd NH Volunteers who mustered in Portsmouth in 1861. Members of the Civil War Roundtable of NH (above), "Governor Goodwin" and New Hampshire's nurse "Harriet Patience Dame" also participate. The Museum opens early (at 9AM) on each day of the encampment so visitors can watch the morning drills. On Sunday the Regiment will form for inspection at 10AM and march to the Porter statue for a special salute at 11AM (free and open to the public.) 19th century baseball game at 2:30pm on Sunday. Encampment program is included in the regular price of admission. Free to members and, under the Blue Star Musuem Program, to active duty military and thier families.

A Concert for a Civil War Encampment

FREE concert presented in conjunction with the NH Humanities Council. Guitarist James Prendergast and his house band Ballymac is a favorite at Strawbery Banke Museum events for his traditional Celtic and Appalachian music. Ken Perlman is one of the top clawhammer banjo players in the world -- a sound closely associated with the Civil War thanks to the popular soundtrack of Ken Burns' documentary, Civil War. That piece, "Ashokan Farewell" is included in the program along with traditional and familiar songs of the era: "Tenting Tonight," "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Bonnie Blue Flag."

 This fall, on Sundays starting September 25th, Strawbery Banke hosts a Civil War 150 commemorative lecture series at Tyco Visitors Center. Sponsored by NH Humanities Council the programs are free and open to the public. 2-3PM, light refreshments served.
Strawbery Banke Museum is leading New Hampshire's commemoration of the 150 anniversary of the American Civil War with the special exhibit "Fitz John Porter: Hero or Coward? Discover the Truth" about Portsmouth-born Maj. Gen Fitz John Porter and the political intrigues that shredded his illustrious career. Open daily 10-4, through October 31, 2011. Walking tours of Porter's Portsmouth Boyhood including his Livermore Street birthplace and the memorial statue in Haven Park are offered daily.
