THSC serves the Texas Home School Community

Celebrating 25 Years of Serving Texas Home Schoolers!

Oct. 11, 2011

LTC 2011

Link Together to Support Your Leaders' Dedication!

Help your leaders attend the 2011 Leadership Training Conference for a time of inspirational and practical workshops (and a chance to win a free laptop)!

Keynote speaker Doug Bartsch will give leaders tools to establish a healthy team culture. Additional speakers and panels will cover topics such as the current political situation in Texas, support group finances, conflict resolution, specialized sub-groups, regional leadership, and media relations.

Your Leaders Can't Succeed Without You!

Home school groups are a team effort, so brainstorm as a group about creative ways to ensure your leaders get the updated training they need to stay effective. Consider having a bake sale, a car wash, or taking up a collection! Maybe even get your teens involved to offer babysitting services in return for a donation to your leaders' LTC fund. Your whole group will benefit!

The More the Merrier!

The more leaders who come from your group, the greater the savings. Check out the registration info for details as you look for ways to link together to make your group stronger than ever.

LeTU offers college credit for HS juniors and seniors.

leaders2Then join the THSC leadership team as an assistant to our Leader Liaison!

The THSC Leader Liaison is the direct link between THSC and home school support organizations in Texas. If you love encouraging home school leaders and would like to assist in serving the home school community in our state, then we have just the place for you!

THSC is currently looking for a volunteer to assist our Leader Liaison. We are continually striving to stay connected with the leadership of each of the support groups across Texas. THSC recognizes the importance of these groups and their leaders and the sacrifices they make to assist home school families, but keeping an accurate and updated database of home school groups and regional groups can be a daunting task.

We are looking for someone who is willing to help us in the ongoing task of contacting and staying connected with these groups---as well as continually looking for new groups who may not know about the services we offer to support groups and their leaders.

Volunteering for THSC is an outstanding way to give of your time to serve home schoolers across this great state! Visit our website for more information about this great opportunity!

More than 15 years ago when Cheryl Carter's oldest child, her son Jarrett, was just starting school, she and her husband were committed to sending him to a good public school. The family had moved to Long Island, New York for that expressed purpose -- quality schools. But soon Cheryl Carter had an epiphany of sorts, which opened her to a whole new world: home-schooling.

As a young boy, Jarrett was incredibly active. Carter said her son's teachers didn't know what to do to harness his energy, capture his attention, and tap into his imagination. As a mother, her instincts told her that without the right support, Jarrett could be turned off from school. The local public school wasn't failing her family yet, but she didn't want things to go that far. The job of inspiring Jarrett fell to her.

Last week I traveled to Austin to attend the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) annual conference. I was invited to attend a specific presentation by a committee from Leadership TASB, a leadership training program for local public school board members. This committee had been meeting for a year, tasked with developing a presentation on home schooling in Texas.

I was contacted by a member of this committee back in June. She shared with me that they were working on this presentation, had used the THSC website extensively for research, and sought Texas home schoolers who were willing to be interviewed about their experiences and views regarding home education. I invited the entire committee to our conference in The Woodlands at the end of July, as our guests, to get a feel for Texas home schooling. Four or five members of the committee joined us, and I spent 90 minutes talking with them about home schooling in Texas. They told me that this opportunity had changed their preconceived ideas about home schooling--and home schoolers--in a positive way.

Straight A's

Straight A's

~ Pat Harrell

Straight A's

As a home school dad, you wonder if you did the job right with your kids.

"Daddy, I made straight A's!" Halley's excited voice glowed over the phone. . . .

All year long, while Halley was off at her university, a question rattled around in my head:  "After 17-plus years of homeschooling this girl, how did I do as a father?" Her mom was astounding, but how did I do? We both wanted her to do well in her home school life and beyond. We told her she was our experiment, as we'd never homeschooled before. In the 1980s I'd heard Raymond Moore on the James Dobson show describe the benefits of home schooling. In the 1990s I married Belinda and started the adventure with Halley. And, in the 2000s, I learned you don't take this home school journey for yourself. You take it for your kids' well-being and future.
