Chapter President Spotlight
Kevin Laborde, TMA Louisiana
Kevin Laborde,
Cash Flow Resources

What's your favorite aspect of being chapter president?
Being Chapter president has meant a number of things to me. I have basically taken my turn at running a few things which longer term members tend to appreciate. It has also elevated the awareness others have of me and my company. With any luck I may actually develop some business through all of this.

What makes your chapter different?
We have a small chapter. While membership has been skewed in the past, we now have a reasonably balanced membership including attorneys, capital providers, consultants, CPAs, and others. We have all worked hard to create events and programs that are relevant and valuable to the membership. That may not sound too different, but making TMA events relevant is important to me.

How did you get involved in TMA?
A friend suggested I join TMA when I started my factoring company some 12 years ago. I started off attending events and eventually joined. Like many such organizations, when you volunteer to do things, you end up getting tagged for board and other leadership positions. The rest is history!

In your opinion, what's the most exciting/interesting trend or event happening in the turnaround and restructuring industry?
Lower capital costs have had interesting consequences in the market. So much money chasing deals out there presents challenges for everyone trying to develop business as the risks are just the same as in "high rate" days. In many instances those low rates have not translated into success but merely encouraged leveraging balance sheets. Low energy prices have really impacted our region as well, though not as severely as other markets. This all points to revenue drivers continuing to be the most important consideration in any transaction while lower energy and capital costs remain somewhat of a distraction.

Is there an upcoming chapter event you're looking forward to?
We have had very successful banker panels in the past and look forward to taking that into other professions and other banks too.

What would someone who only knows you professionally be surprised to learn about you?
I like to roast pigs and do it in a rather unique way that reflects my central Louisiana roots.

Early Bird Discount for TMA Europe's Annual Conference Is Extended

TMA Europe has extended its early bird discount, which equates to a savings of up to $140 (or €122), until Monday, April 25.

This year's conference is being held in Rome on June 9-10 and will once again see some of the foremost experts in the field of turnaround and restructuring debating the key issues facing the industry.

The theme for this year is how to increase performance through turnaround culture and values, with a program that includes panel debates, presentations on turnaround case studies, and a host of expert speakers. Topics being tackled by panels include the latest trends, techniques, and tools for SME debt restructuring, European NPL resolution efforts, and equity cram-down and EU harmonization.

There will also be discussions focusing on the tactics and techniques for dealing with distressed businesses and on the role a founding entrepreneur plays in the turnaround of an SME.

In addition, there will be speeches on issues of interest, including one from leading U.S. restructuring lawyer Stephen Lerner who will be sharing his tips for success in SME restructuring.

Enrica Maria Ghia, the president of TMA Italy, a conference co-chair, said, "In recent years the conference has built an excellent reputation for being one of leading events for turnaround practitioners, investors, and other professionals involved in distressed environments across Europe.

"This year's conference is set to be another great occasion, offering lots of lively and informative debates as well as plenty of networking opportunities to ensure it is as enjoyable as it is productive."

The conference, now in its ninth year, is being held at the Grand Hotel Plaza in the heart of Rome.

JCR Article Spotlight

It is no secret the healthcare industry has been experiencing an unprecedented tidal wave of consolidation over the past several years. On its surface, the healthcare industry appears to be generally profitable, with massive mergers creating powerful integrated providers designed to capitalize on the current regulatory and reimbursement environment. But this merger activity can often disguise powerful undercurrents of financial distress.
