TMJD and Massage Therapy
Curtis Wise
Registered Massage Therapist
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD, TMJD) issues affect approximately 20% to 30% of the adult population. With life and workplace stress on the rise, more and more of us are clenching are teeth during the day and grinding them away at night.  Those are just two of the many issues that can affect jaw health.  Other examples include, but are not limited to whiplash injuries, muscular imbalances, joint misalignment, poorly done dental work, or a genetic predisposition to TMD issues.

Jaw pain or tension is not normal and shouldn’t be just ‘dealt’ with.  Not all cases can be resolved, but they can be managed and in some cases conditions may vastly improve. Ignoring your TMD issues can cause imbalances further downstream in your neck, shoulders and even your back.  Problems can’t just go away without some form of management.

Massage therapy is a great tool to manage and improve muscular tension within your jaw, which can help free up your temporomandibular joint. Massage Treatment to the muscles, which help you, chew, swallow, talk and whistle will be done externally and sometimes intra-orally if necessary. Many patients feel an immediate improvement post treatment after one session, although depending on the severity it could take a bit longer.

If you struggle with chronic headaches, tinnitus (ringing in your ear), jaw pain, clicking, or if you clench or grind your teeth, come by and have us assess your jaw to see what we can do for you.
Osteoarthritis:
The Best Treatment is Prevention
Claire Ullrich
Rehab and MedEx Specialist

According to the Arthritis Alliance of Canada (AAC), osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects 1 in 8 Canadians.  Although often associated with the elderly, symptoms of OA can present themselves as early as 20 years of age in some cases.

OA most commonly presents itself in the major load-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees.  What occurs is a gradual loss of cartilage that surrounds the ends of healthy bones locations which they come in contact.  For example, the head of the tibia (lower leg) and distal portion of the femur (thigh bone) should have a healthy amount of cartilage, as well as a natural “lubricant” that our bodies produce called synovial fluid.  When that cartilage begins to deteriorate, that resulting raw bone-to-bone exposure can make even standing from a seated position an excruciating task.

Fortunately, although OA is a general wear and tear disease, it does not affect everyone.  The best way to delay the onset of or prevent OA is to stay in shape.  For every unnecessary pound we gain, our load bearing joints feel three times the strain.  Furthermore, strength training can actually help strengthen the muscles around the joints, and reduce the severity of the pain accompanied by OA.  It has been suggested, however, that high impact activities, (running, jumping, plyometric cardio) if performed too frequently, can actually increase your chances of developing OA.  There is an optimal mix of the right cardiovascular activities (e.g. cycling, walking, swimming) and strength training that can be both a preventative and a treatment measure for osteoarthritis.

Don’t wait for OA to catch up with you; Get moving!

Client Story
"Chiropractic Made my Cane Too Short!"

"I've had a cane for years. Recurring back pain for long enough I made my own cane. As you might think, it fit.
I've been seeing Dr. Nik for about 2 years. The use of my cane became less frequent until I haven't touched it in a while. Anyway I lifted wrong and hurt my back. I pulled out my trusty cane only to find it is now 1 3/4" too short. I assure you I am no taller so I must be straighter."

Thanks to the great care my back healed quickly and my short cane is now helping another" says Mac

Bulletproof Collagen Protein

What is Collagen?
Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and the most abundant protein in the body. It is composed of the individual amino acids Glycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine and in nature is found exclusively in animal tissue, especially bones and connective tissue. It’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together, giving our hair and skin it’s strength and elasticity and helping to replace dead skin cells while providing connective tissue with the ability to hold everything in place.

Our body’s natural collagen production begins to slow down as we age (you can thank this process for wrinkles, sagging skin and weaker cartilage in your joints) and many modern lifestyle factors like stress, smoking, poor diet, gut health imbalances can also decrease the body’s ability to make it.

Upgraded Collagen is the gold standard for achieving the fastest possible healthy tissue repair, muscle matrix, bone renewal and recovery after exercise! It can boost mental clarity, reduce inflammation, upgrade your skin, and it mixes easily with other foods and water thanks to its neutral taste.

Upgraded Collagen is sourced from pasture-raised cows. These cattle are untouched by drugs or hormones and spend their entire lives in the pasture.  Upgraded Collagen is enzymatically processed several times to leave its peptides intact, resulting in a neutral tasting, highly available protein that is odorless and doesn’t clump, which is typically easier to digest and is often suggested for people with digestive issues. It is far easier to use and contains more collagen than bone broth. Upgraded Collagen does not contain any dairy, egg, sugar, corn, yeast, wheat, soy, gluten, artificial flavors, or preservatives.

Benefits of Upgraded Collagen include
  • Fast tissue repair as it provides the particular proteins that ensure cohesion, elasticity and regeneration of skin, cartilage and bone.
  • Greater flexibility and mobility since it makes the main building blocks of connective tissue, and having bioavailability, becomes well absorbed into joints for greater flexibility and mobility.
  • Strong bone and joint support - supports strong, heavier, denser bones and contains two building blocks of cartilage that are essential for refueling after exercise and sports.
  • Revitalized skin as it promotes skin hydration, reduces the number of fine lines, prevents deeper wrinkles, and maintains the suppleness of your skin from the inside out.
Collagen for Restorative Sleep
Prepare a tea from grass-fed collagen peptides (with coconut oil).  It can be taken at bedtime as a therapeutic option for improving sleep. Collagen deepens sleep, stimulates growth hormone release, and provides nutrients necessary to perform tissue repair while sleeping. Ingesting collagen not only enhances sleep quality but it also helps reduce daytime sleepiness and helps improve memory during waking hours (by providing the amino acid glycine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter (brainstem and spinal cord) which is involved in motor and sensory pathways as well as ATP synthesis. It undergoes passive diffusion through the blood-brain barrier and acts primarily on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDA)).

Bulletproof Coffee and Brain Octane Oil
Curtis Wise
RMT, Personal Trainer

Bulletproof Coffee is a 100% mold free coffee. Ingesting mold toxins can contribute to chronic health issues. Bulletproof coffee is grown at high altitude on single estates in Guatemala, hand-harvested, carefully processed, handled and roasted to maintain maximum integrity and flavor. The final roast then undergoes proprietary lab testing to verify that it meets the Bulletproof quality and purity standards.

Brain Octane - distilled from 100% pure coconut oil, is the shortest of the MCT’s (medium chain triglycerides) naturally found in coconut oil -in small quantities. Brain Octane produces 4x the ketone energy of plain coconut oil, which rapidly provides mental and physical energy, powers your day by supporting cognitive function and keeps you satisfied and free from food cravings. Brain Octane is rapidly absorbed and changed into ketone bodies (Acetone Acetoacetate β – Hydroxybutyrate -chemicals that the body makes when there is not enough insulin in the blood and it must break down fat instead of the sugar glucose for energy) – providing instant energy to the brain without breaking down glucose from sugars or carbohydrates. Brain Octane also has potent anti-microbial effects due to the caprylic fatty acids which balances yeast in the gut, supports healthy digestion and improves immune function.

Brain Octane Oil can substitute any of your usual edible oils. It should not be used to replace all of the fat in your diet, and should be used as part of low carbohydrate (removing refined i.e. sugary foods, pasta and bread) diet.
Begin using 1 teaspoon per day and slowly increase over several days. Too much Brain Octane Oil, especially if consumed on an empty stomach, may result in a stomachache. 1-3 tablespoons per day is recommended for Bulletproof practitioners.
The best way to maximize energy is to use Brain Octane Oil with Upgraded Coffee to make Bulletproof Coffee. Blend Brain Octane Oil with grass-fed butter and combine it with Bulletproof Coffee to gain hours of energy and support ketone production! It may also be used in smoothies, salad dressings, and many recipes.
