Recently an assistant manager position was posted as an out-of-scope position in a GSU shop. There is no provision for an out-of-scope assistant manager in either the collective agreement with the employer nor the certification order issued to GSU by the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board. An alert union member and elected officer raised the issue with GSU representatives, who in turn raised the issue with the employer's HR department.

An investigation determined that the out-of-scope posting was the result of an administrative error. The assistant manager position has been re-posted as an in-scope job.

GSU relies on union members to report workplace problems and violations of the collective agreement or related mistakes.

"GSU isn't just the union office and reps in Regina and Saskatoon," said general secretary Hugh Wagner. "The union is members, elected officers and union staff all working together."

If you notice a workplace problem, a violation of the collective agreement or a related mistake, contact your GSU staff rep.

Contacting GSU doesn't mean you are obligated to file a grievance. We can help gather facts and identify whether union member rights have been violated. Contact information for GSU staff is available here.

Joint Executive Council considers succession plans, approves recruitment of GSU staff rep

GSU's Joint Executive Council (the union's board of directors) held its semi-annual meeting in Saskatoon on October 19.

The meeting agenda included business related to succession planning in GSU's administration. Among other things, the Council approved a proposal to advertise and fill a staff rep position in the union's Regina office. A revised and updated job description for the staff rep classification was approved along with a hiring/recruitment committee charged with responsibility to receive applications, conduct interviews and make a hiring recommendation to the Council.

The Council meeting also received a report from general secretary Hugh Wagner on GSU finances and considered his fall 2017 report to union members. Council members were provided updates on current events and issues affecting GSU members. Plans were made for holding  Local and Sub-Local annual membership meetings and holding GSU's biennial policy convention from March 22 to 24, 2018.

GSU's administration regularly schedules the semi-annual meeting of the Joint Executive Council (JEC) to coincide with Saskatchewan Federation of Labour conventions in order to reduce expenses and minimize infringement on Council members' family lives.

The next regular meeting of the JEC will be held in March 2018 in conjunction with GSU's biennial policy convention.

Plan backwards, perform better

Working from the last essential step in your plan toward where you currently are can make you more successful.

When your visualize yourself at your ultimate end goal, it makes that goal feel believable and attainable. From there you simply work backward, filling in the blanks to where you presently are. And research shows that when people are working from a goal to where they now are, they tend to be more confident in their decisions.
