Masonry Inspection Checklist Update completed by the Construction Practices Committee
|
The
Construction Practices Committee of The Masonry Society developed a Masonry Inspection Checklist for use during the preconstruction, construction, and closeout phases of a project. The document serves as a tool for masonry construction inspectors, mason contractors, general contractors, architects, and engineers to assist them in assuring compliance with the applicable building code and contract documents. It is now available in an expandable/
collapsible spreadsheet so that users can focus on those portions applicable for their projects. This new edition may be downloaded at no cost
here.

The long-awaited update to the popular textbook Masonry Structures: Behaviour and Design, 4th Edition has been completed and will be available from The Masonry Society in late May. Dr. Ahmad Hamid has updated this widely used textbook and guide to discuss new research findings and to reflect the design provisions in the TMS 402/602-16. The textbook also includes numerous design examples (based on the strength design method) and two buildings designs of a single-story building and a multistory building. This textbook is ideal for undergraduate and graduate level courses and it is an exceptional reference for practicing designers. Annual Meeting Presentations Sought
TMS is seeking presentations for its Annual Meeting that will be held October 3-6 in Cleveland Ohio. Presentations will be presented on Thursday (new this year) October 4th and are to be 20 minutes in length and must comply with TMS and AIA requirements noted
here. If you have a technical presentation you would like considered, please email a Title, a one paragraph description, and a 1 paragraph speaker bio to
Phillip Samblanet no later than May 7, 2018. Notification of selected topics will be made later this Spring.
The Masonry Society's "2nd Thursday of the Month" webinar series will continue this fall and speakers and topics are sought. Presentations must be 50 to 55 minutes in length and must comply with TMS and AIA requirements noted here. If you have a technical presentation you would like considered, please email a Title, a one paragraph course description, 4 Learning Objectives, and a 1 paragraph speaker bio to
Phillip Samblanet no later than May 7, 2018. Presentations will be selected based on those that seem of most interest to the reviewing Committee. Notification of selected topics will be made later this Spring.
The Masonry Society is hoping to host sessions and a booth at the at the 2019 Structures Congress (April 25-27, 2019 in Orlando, FL). If you have a technical presentation you would be willing to present for TMS, please email a Title, a one paragraph description, and a 1 paragraph speaker bio to

Spring Meeting Notes and Busy Spring
|
|
This spring has been extremely busy and productive for The Masonry Society and we are working on a number of new projects, while finishing many others. During the Spring Meetings, the Board of Directors approved an aggressive Fiscal Year 2019 budget for the Society while the Executive Committee has begun Long Range Planning with consideration of the 6-year revision cycle for TMS 402/602.
Earlier this Spring, the Society, with support of the masonry industry, also hosted an excellent Masonry Educator's Workshop, conducted several webinars, finished reviews of the textbook, Masonry Structures Behaviour and Design and the Masonry Designers' Guide 2016, and several other publications. Work will continue over the summer months to complete additional publications and resources.

Distinguished Professor of Architecture
Patrick Rand, FAIA, DPACSA
, FTMS, has become one of the first NC State recipients of a Fulbright Distinguished Chair Award. This award is highly competitive and is considered one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world. To be considered, applicants must be eminent scholars in their discipline and have a significant publication and teaching record. Rand will use his award to teach and research at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, from January to May 2019.
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger recently named Anindya Dutta
as an Associate Principal.
Dutta specializes in structural and earthquake engineering, analyzing and designing a variety of structures in high-seismic zones. His experience also includes seismic evaluation and retrofit of seismically deficient low- to high-rise structures.
