Strategic Plan
Based on recommendations from a Strategic Planning Task Group, the Masonry Society's Board of Directors approved a new vision, mission, and goals for the society at their Annual Meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina in October 2016 as follows.

Vision: A world where masonry continues as the system of choice for a sustainable built environment

Mission: To advance masonry knowledge, its development and application

Goals:
* Collaborate with and engage the global masonry community.
* Aggregate and expand masonry information.
* Provide education and disseminate knowledge
* Sustain and advance a vibrant Society

Scott Walkowicz, Immediate Past-President of TMS and Chair of the Strategic Planning Task Group, believes "the new vision, mission, and goals better reflect the hopes and plans for the Society while providing inspiration for possible growth for not only TMS but the masonry community as a whole."  Additional work to develop objectives under each goal will be done in the coming months.

Appeals on TMS 402/602 Addressed
Procedural and Technical Appeals that were received in June on proposed revisions to TMS 402, Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures were carefully considered over the summer and a conference call to discuss the appeals with the appellants was held at the end of August. Following that conference call, both the Board of Directors and the Technical Activities Committee, by ballot, found the appeals non-persuasive, thus allowing the standards to move forward towards finalization. The appellants and all others interested in the provisions are invited to participate in future meetings and activities of the Committee to express their views and opinions while working to improve these important standards.

2016 Editions of TMS 402/602 and TMS 404/504/604 Approved
In June, Committee TMS 402/602, which is charged with developing and maintaining the standards Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures (TMS 402 and TMS 602) submitted its closure and responses to public comments received on proposed revisions to the 2013 editions of the standards. Because of appeals (see related article), the Technical Activities Committee (TAC) delayed review of the Committee's Responses to Public Comments and Closure. With the appeals addressed, TAC  reviewed and accepted the Committee's Closure and forwarded a recommendation to the Board of Directors for publication of the standards.

TAC also reviewed the responses to Public Comments from the Cast Stone Committee and likewise recommended approval to the Board of Directors.

The Board approved all these standards for immediate publication, and directed staff to post the final closures to the Society's website for review by the public. Responses to public comments, changes resulting as a result of the public comments, ballots, minutes and other correspondence can be accessed at the links below:
Comments on the revisions by the public may be made  by emailing staff no later than November 30, 2016. Comments received will be forwarded to the appropriate committee for consideration and response.

TMS is publishing TMS 402/602-16 (cover shown above) and TMS 402/504/604-16 (cover shown below) at this time. Limited electronic copies will be available next week, and printed copies of the Standards should be available in November. Watch TMS's website for availability.

New TMS Website coming in November!
Work on a new website of the Soceity is nearing completion and will allow easier ordering of publications, tracking of orders by logged-in customers, and easier and greater access for Members, all while decreasing the burdens on TMS Staff in maintaining member records. TMS Executive Director, Phillip Samblanet briefly debuted the website at TMS's Town Hall Meetings earlier this month, and response was extremely positive. Staff and consultants are finishing work on the Main website now with the hopes of making the new website available no later than November 15. Some current features of the website may not be developed for several weeks or months including the ballot portal and some searchable databases. But overall, the new website should allow easier access by all. Watch for information on the newe website in the coming weeks, along with educational webinars on using the new site.

Notice on Unsubscribing & Forwarding Messages
Important information regarding TMS emails & Constant Contact.

To forward TMS emails, E-Newsletter, and Announcements that are sent via Constant Contact, use the Forward button at the bottom of the newsletters to ensure that if one of your contacts hits the "Unsubscribe" button at the bottom, that they don't unsubscribe you. The problem with the Forward button though is that it only allows you to Forward to a limited number of email addresses (7). For longer lists, you may have to do this several times. Alternatively, you could Forward the email with a personal note at the top, explaining that if they do not wish to receive the TMS forwarded messages from you, that they contact you directly to be removed from your particular email list.

Please note: Your email address is from a list solely owned and maintained by The Masonry Society (TMS) for our exclusive email purposes. TMS does NOT share our email lists. If you are a TMS Member, sit on a TMS committee, you should not "unsubscribe" as your email is essential to your membership and is used for committee balloting. Likewise, if you have requested to be on one of our mailing lists, you should also not click unsubscribe because by doing so, you will be removed from the distribution list. If you choose to use the Unsubscribe button on this page, you will not receive future TMS New Briefs, TMS Sustainability E-News, committee news, and notices of upcoming seminars, activities and opportunities.
