Earn Income as a Freelance Writer: Yes. You Can!
With Ellen Ullman Today-more than ever-content is king. The iPad and other mobile devices have breathed new life into the magazine industry. Online publications and special-interest websites continue to proliferate. Meaning that your skills as a writer of freelance articles are more in demand than ever before. Although it depends on how much time and effort you can devote to it, freelance writing can be very lucrative. For example, the 2012 Writer's Market, and other resources that in-the-know freelancers consult for leads, report that at least 26 magazines pay between $1.50 and $1.99 per word, and 19 magazines pay $2 or more per word. Plenty of writers earn more than $100,000 a year. This intensive half-day workshop will teach participants what they need to know about the freelance business and how to break into it. Specific topics will include: - The basics: consumer vs. trade magazines, feature stories, FOB (front-of-book) or BOB (back-of-book) pieces, essays, and web content.
- The pitching process: how to figure out where to pitch, how to pitch, how to come up with a targeted idea, and how to pitch it properly.
- Researching the story: finding experts, staying organized, tips on using online resources such as HARO to get your story.
- Writing the article: tips and tricks; going from notes to paragraphs to story to polished piece.
- Developing relationships: getting on press lists; being known as the writer who goes the extra mile; how to make editors want to work with you again and again.
- How to find and best use resources for finding leads, landing assignments, and other freelancers' resources.
Participants will receive a comprehensive handout with tips and resources. Ellen Ullman is a freelance writer and editor who for more than 10 years has managed her own successful freelance writing business, writing magazine, newspaper and Internet articles. Prior to that she worked as an editor for several publications, including Working Woman, FamilyPC, and Small Business Computing. Her work has been published in publications such as Cooking Light, Self, Marie Claire, Crain's NY Business, and hundreds of trade publications including Tech & Learning, Community College Journal, and Community College Times. Enrollment is limited to 12. A few spaces remain.

Writopia Lab is a creative writing program for kids and teens, ages 8 to 18. Workshops are grouped by age and feature no more than six students. All instructors are published novelists, playwrights and poets trained in Writopia Lab's workshopping method.
With a focus on making writing fun for kids and teens, Writopia Lab workshops foster the discipline and craft required for excellent written expression. Our students learn grammar and word choice through practical application, not rote. They acquire confidence and sociability through peer review and through public readings of their own work.
For the summer, each five-day workshop meets three hours per day over five straight days. The cost per workshop is $425.
Writopia Lab is a 501(c)3c nonprofit dedicated to not turning away students based on their ability to pay. The program's mission is to create and sustain a diverse community of young writers, and to provide an open, safe, and nurturing space for youth to find and express their voices through creative and intellectual endeavors.
Workshops are peppered with fun, friendship, and productive games as young writers are guided in the process of choosing and completing their own original pieces, including short stories, poetry, plays and personal essays.
We'd love to answer your questions! For more information about Writopia Lab in Westchester and Fairfield counties, please email Lena.Roy@WritopiaLab.org or call (914) 401-4159. Or join the mailing list to get updates on Writopia Labs schedules and events.
