Gems From the Warehouse                           March 2020

Last month we lost our warehouse lease--a 1200 sq. ft. space we had occupied since 2007.  While we found a new warehouse we still had to move 13 years of accumulated stock including the good, the bad and the ugly.  We did donate 230 banker boxes of books to the local Friends of the Grand County Public Library, so that felt good!

This list is composed entirely of gems (and one crappy book) we discovered in the process of moving. In one case, the item had sat for 12 years, untouched. Many I have little or no recollection of ever purchasing.   There are some really nice items on this list including a rare collection of Theodore Roosevelt photos, a miniature book quilt, climate maps from WW2, a great set of Montana ledgers, a set of artist proofs of Navajo Sand Paintings, a rare signed Ansel Adams title and so much more.

And given social distancing I wrote this list entirely at home--a brand new experience for me. No reference books handy, a dog asking to play all day and clearly a snarky attitude which kept creeping into the descriptions.  My apologies in advance. more images upon request.

The bookstore is basically closed so any purchase will help make payroll for our nine employees.

Books that reside in our warehouse are not limited to our specialties in natural history and the American West, and many gems lie hidden therein.  You're receiving this list because you've either purchased from us or are a friend in the business.  If you prefer not to see these monthly postings you may easily unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the page.

We buy collections and maintain want lists.  Books are subject to prior sale and may be held for one week.  Any item is returnable within two weeks for a full refund.  Dealer discounts and institutional billing are available for all books we offer.

Back of Beyond Books hosts an open shop in the red rock paradise of Moab, UT.  We're open daily from 10 AM-6PM.

BILLING AND DEALER DISCOUNT IS AVAILABLE ON THIS LIST!

76 Climatology Maps from World War 2

Set of 76 maps compiled by the Climatology Branch of the Office of the Quartermaster General, Army Map Service, Washington, D.C. 1943. The maps show Climate Zones for North America, Asia, South America, Australasia, Africa and Europe. Each set has 12 maps, one for each month and color coded for climatatic variation. Plus 4 sheets, one for each season of the Oceans of the Northern Hemisphere. Maps show general edge wear plus some light water damage along the edges of several sets.   Maps have been stored in a gentle roll but there is no creasing. I have not
done much research into these sets but according to OCLC this group is a subset of the many Climate Zone Maps published during the war years. Set numbers include 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 plus the Northern Hemisphere set. Generally there are 20-30 holdings for each continental set at institutions yet I was unable to find recent auction records or sets in commerce. Maybe I've not used the correct key words. Map sizes range from 24 x 18 inches to 33 x 24 inches. Anyway, the 76 maps may be had for $1500.

Theodore Roosevelt Collection of 111 Gelatin Silver Prints Mostly by Paul Thompson

Collection of silver gel prints of Theodore Roosevelt, dating from 1900 to his death in 1919, including 5 large photos from the Annual Tribute to Roosevelt at Oyster Bay (1923). Most in very good condition; a small number have small edge tears and a couple are missing corner pieces not affecting the photo. Sizes range from 3 x 4 inches to 8 x 10 inches-the majority are larger format than the 3 x 4 inch prints. Most photos fully annotated on verso with photographer's credit and date and location! Laid loose in modern album.

Paul Thompson was a New York documentary photographer whose work appeared in magazines and newspapers in the first quarter of the 20th century. He accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on his famed post-presidential voyage to Africa (1909-1910), a trip chronicled in African Game Trails. Approximately 30 photos are from this expedition and post-expedition parade. Additional views detail a trip west to the Cheyenne Fair in 1907, scenes of New York including several large prints of his trophy room in Oyster Bay, New York. 22 photos are from Roosevelt's failed presidential bid in 1912 including a number of wonderful views of Teddy on the stump, but also eating and drinking his way through the campaign.  One of the earlier poignant views shows Roosevelt "greeting a cowboy at the Cheyenne Fair in 1907" The typed text on verso states the cowboy was an ex-Rough Rider. Altogether a wonderful collection of TR views with assuredly some unpublished views included.
Earlier views include a shot as governor of New York, 1899-1900, a 1903 view as president attending the St. Louis Fair and a 1906 view speaking at Memorial Day exercises at Grant's Tomb.
How or why this collection ended up in the warehouse worries me as it is quite valuable. I do remember showing the set at at least one book fair and apparently in the unpacking, the album went astray. It reminds me of the time Walkabout Books and Back of Beyond compiled a catalogue of National Park material and I "discovered" a signed John Muir title in the old warehouse. Guess I need to be more careful yet I suspect most book dealers have similar stories of lost and found treasures in the back room, storage unit or warehouse. One small piece of advice? Rent the smallest storage space for your needs. Nature abhors empty spaces and you WILL fill it if available.

American Eagle
Leeson, Tom and Pat, Beyond Words Publishing Hillsboro, OR 1988

Dark brown beveled boards (literally in this case) with black leather spine with title in gold gilt on spine. Book boards are pieces of handcrafted rosewood sanded and oiled to a satiny finish. Book encased in grey clamshell box with 'marbled' padded cloth in which the book nestles nicely. Title of book debossed on front of clamshell. A remarkable and expensive  presentation for a trade book which is not expensive or hard to find. Leather spine has very light wear. Clamshell box is faded and soiled on spine with bumped corners. Interior of book is clean with tight binding. This particular book is 51 of 250 signed by the photographers, book designer, binder, editor and publisher. From the publisher:  Limited edition of 250 copies./ "Each edition comes in a grey linen box lined in marbleized, hand-painted silk. The artists creation on the hand-painted silk is to be a symbolic view of earth, from the sky, as viewed by an eagle. The book cover is hand crafted rosewood which is sanded and oiled to a satin finish and the spine is done in leather with 23 1/2 karat gold lettering. Within each book is a colophon page numbered and signed by the authors and artists. Each limited edition begins with hand selected pages from the first print run and handmade paper is used for the end sheets. Custom inks were produced for the six color printing to provide the feeling of nature and the power of the eagle. Each image is framed with a white line, which is opened at the corners to allow the eagle freedom of flight" . A beautiful presentation of full color photography of the American Bald Eagle From the photographers' statement: "During the years we've photographed wildlife, we've come to appreciate eagles as one of God's most dynamic creations, and it is with thanksgiving and joy that we share this intimate glimpse into the life of this fascinating bird.. One copy of this limited edition at Ashland University in Ohio.
In some previous life I had priced this at $700.  I think $100 sounds better today.

Locomotive 315 The Lives, Times and Rebirth of an 1895 Steam Engine
Published by the Durango Railroad Historical Society, 2010. New in publisher's shrink wrap, although the wrap is torn in several places the boards appear undamaged. Why this was laying around the warehouse when it is a perfect book for our railroad 'foamer' genre in the store is a mystery to me. Published at $79.85. Your price $50.00

Standard Atlas of Kit Carson County Colorado

1922 Compiled and Published by Geo. A. Ogle & Co., Chicago. Bound in an awful spicy mustard cloth binding with white text on spine. Ex-library from the Denver Public Library with red library stamp on title page. Blessedly the 3 or 4 maps with library markings are so marked on the edges. 6 pages are detached and have tears and chips to fore edge. 4 maps are hand colored. Not the nicest atlas I've seen but there are only 11 copies noted in OCLC and surely someone in Colorado needs this set at the bargain price of $75.00

Western Encampment on the Sagebrush Plains

Silver Photograph, Circa 1880's?, 9 ½ x 7 ⅝ inches on 13 x 10 ¾ inch mount of encampment of 12 tents set in sagebrush plains with small creek in the foreground. Photo and mount is scratched and soiled and mount shows water damage. Still the photo has wonderful content. I have little recollection of purchasing this photo but must have been taken by the content which is quite clear and compelling.  Showing a grouping of tents, wagons and horses near a dirt road with electrical lines running off into the distance along with a buggy raising dust near the horizon. Each tent is numbered with index identifying each tent on verso including commissary, bunk tents, kitchen, dining room, stable and kitchen etc. The million dollar question of course is where, why, what and when. They say every picture tells a story and this one has a great great story which I will allow someone brighter than I to figure out. $35.00.

1844 North American Indian Portfolio by George Catlin

Black pebble elephant folio 18 x 23 ½ inches with gilt title on front. Light soiling to board. Paper sleeve holding prints lightly sunned and worn. Missing one protective leaf but all 25 fabulous prints are present and clean. This is the 1970 Swallow Press reproduction of the rare 1844 North American Indian Portfolio by George Catlin, introduction by Harold McCracken. Includes the large booklet reproducing the original text. Two inch graphite mark on last page of booklet. Copy number 310 of 1,000. No set quite equals Catlin's Portfolio; one which no one can afford. I can only assume this fine set ended up in the purgatory of the warehouse due to its large size and difficulty of displaying in the store. My shipper will groan when I give him the set to ship but he will do a fine job, don't you worry.  We cannot lie; we love big books. Howes C-243. Some time in the past ten years I had marked this set at $350. Priced at $175 to a new home.

Antiphonal Leaf on Vellum

Antiphonal leaf, 22 x 15 ¼ inches on vellum. Three beautifully rubricated  letters on recto plus two additional letters on verso. 7 staffs on each side. Vellum is toned on recto; much whiter on verso. Disbound from hymnal with some edge wear. Probably framed at some point with remnant tape at top edge of verso. Not exactly within our genre of western Americana, I recall a colleague bemusedly asking, "why did you buy that?!?" To which I replied, "because I really like it". I have no idea how old it may be but I still really like it. However it is time to pass it on to someone else who may not only appreciate the beauty but also know more about it than I. Would look very nice framed again and hung in your study or library. $65.00

Montana Ledger Books (5)

Set of 5 ledger books for the Spring Hill Ranch in Crane, Montana and the Yellowstone Mercantile Company of Sidney, Montana. Four distinct styles of ledgers ranging from full maroon leather, to ¾ leather and cloth (2 in this style), ¾ leather and  corduroy post binding to full cloth with leather corners. Typical condition for heavy ledgers approx. 110 years old with general wear and tear all around with generally tight bindings and very legible script. I am a sucker for ledgers, fully anticipating having the time to research the companies, find famous lenders and clients and fully grasp the arcane bookkeeping notes to discern the operations of the businesses involved.  Alas, we have a full shelf of ledger books in the store and more in the warehouse. This set ranges from 1909 to 1917 with an added bonus of notations as late as 1945 in the second half of the 1917 book. The Yellowstone Mercantile Company opened in 1906 so these represent most of the first ten years of that fabled store in Sidney. I've not found the relationship between Spring Hill Ranch and the Mercantile but suspect the same family had interest in both. Crane and Sidney Montana are located along the far eastern border with North Dakota in Richland County, near the Yellowstone River. I suspect I bid on this set not having researched exactly where the Yellowstone Mercantile Company was located...assuming it was near present day Yellowstone National Park.  Oops. About a 57 lb. mistake. These suckers are large and heavy and shipping will be at cost. Still they are wonderful records of a working ranch and clothing store on the plains of eastern Montana and belong with a collector or institution who will put them to use and finally get them out of our warehouse. $250.00

Visionaire 55 Surprise

Purple Box. With magnetic closure, still in publisher's shrink wrap. Back in 2008, just before the last recession, I began to dabble in collectible books and looked forward to visiting with David Waag, a commissioned book rep for, among many other publishers, DAP (Distributed Art Publishers). David would show these hugely imaginative "books" titled Visionaire. More art than book, Visionaire was established in 1991 with its roots in limited edition publishing which has since expanded into an experiential agency. Visionaire has been collaborating with artists, influencers, and Fortune 500 companies for over 25 years; conceptualizing and producing public art installations, film, immersive and interactive experiences, branded content, and art multiples through the lens of art, fashion, and contemporary culture. David convinced me that any issue would appreciate in value so I should buy a copy of each issue.  He certainly was correct for many issues.

Today we offer Visionaire 55 Surprise, number 2546/4000, sitting in the warehouse ever since 2008, still in shrink wrap. From the publisher: How does photography come to life? How do you transform 2-D into 3-D? Can a photograph move on the printed page? This newest issue of the high-concept fashion quarterly Visionaire pushes the limits of paper with an issue devoted to pop-ups. Visionaire 55: Surprise presents 12 hardcover pop-up books, boxed together, with projects by Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Sophie Calle, Andreas Gursky, Cai Guo-Qiang, Guido Mocafico, Sølve Sundsbø, Yayoi Kusama, Gareth Pugh and Alasdair McLellan. Together, the pop-up folios are housed in a cloth-covered case with a magnetized closure and an engraved metal plaque. Surprise is a collaboration with the internationally renowned Champagne house, Krug. $150.00

Hand-made Miniature Book Quilt Measuring 21 x 21 inches.

Purple, lavender and pink hued quilt with 9 hand-drawn squares commemorating the Miniature book Society Grand Conclave XIII, 1995 held in Pasadena, California. Light soiling. Custom blocks include designs honoring the Huntington, San Fernando Mission, Doubletree Hotel (likely convention headquarters), Mariana Blau, California Poppy, a Sun, Palm Tree and the Pasadena logo of a Red Rose and the MBS logo. Verso is mostly white with floral hanging sleeve at top edge. Quilt was crafted by Jean Tolford. In manuscript on verso it states, "This miniature quilt "Crooked Road to California" was made for Doris and Jerry Selmer organizers extraordinaire of the Miniature Book Society's Grand Conclave XIII Pasadena, California September 1-4, 1995. Doris Selmer was President of the MBS at the time. Both Doris and Jerry were well known in the fraternity of Southern California book collectors and historians. Acquired directly from the Selmer family. Perhaps one of the most unique items of book related ephemera I've come across.  $100

Harper's Weekly Vol. VI 1862 Jan.-Dec.

An uncollated volume of Harper's Weekly from 1862.  Upon quick glance it is missing at least one issue, December 27 and possibly more. I found at least 3 of the Winslow Homer sketches AND the October 4, 1862 issue containing Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation is present. Again, I did not collate the set. The volume is in fair only condition with the binding entirely exhausted and numerous chips to the fore edge of many issues, rarely extending into the text block. This broken set details the height of the American Civil War with much original content and fantastic engravings and drawings.  A previous owner had used this set for research with light marginalia noted. Much of the interior is in good to very good condition however I cannot bear to break it up and will leave that to someone else. The proclamation issue alone should fetch several hundred dollars. $200

John James Audubon Portfolio-Limited to 2500 copies

Olive clamshell box still in publisher's shrink wrap. One corner of clamshell has slight bump. Limited to 2500 copies. John James Audubon Portfolio : a Selection of the Original Drawings and Watercolors used in the making of Birds of America, accompanied by a choice of Audubon's writings by John James Audubon ; edited, with introduction, by Ben Forkner Publisher: France and Belgium : Pascal Jean, 2004 Edition unbound leaves in two softcover coverings contained in a fine cloth clam shell case. New. Set includes "drawings recently discovered in the cellars of the Natural History Museum in La Rochelle", and "mature works from the great collection of the New York Historical Society". Reproduction of Audubon's signature on the front cover of the box.

Large art books are a conundrum for open shops. Buyers enjoy browsing the beautiful books yet they become easily damaged, which is why I suspect I squirreled this set away, long ago. Apparently we've owned this set since 2004, which considering its size (15 ½ x 12 x 3 ¾ inches), was truly buried in the old warehouse. I'm sure this is a magnificent set but it is time for it to move on at $150.00.

Designs on the Land-Disenos of California Ranchos and Their Makers

Brown boards with suede spine with dark brown title. Boards are mildly warped with light damage near spine on front board. Rear board shows water damage which left light mildew to back 4 endpapers. Book Club of California issue 133, 1 of 500 copies. Printed by Robert Grabhorn and Andrew Hoyem. Quite a beautiful book showing reproductions of early disenos (sketches) of Mexican California.  Sold, or should I say, given away in "as is condition" with the hopes that someone may find enjoyment with the book. Shipping will be at cost but otherwise free. Actually I think I need to charge $1 so the on-line bots allow it to be listed. $1.00

Set of Three Engravings Depicting Various Indian Wars

All in good to very good condition.
  1.  From Le Monde Illustre, likely 1876 depicting the Battle of Little Bighorn as drawn by M. Vierge and engraved by M. Piton with article in French on verso, "Massacre Des Troupes du General Custer.
  2. From Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper November 8, 1879. Colorado-The Ute Outbreak and Massacre Near the White River Agency-From Sketches by our Special Artist. Mounted in mat board and shrink wrapped. Includes three separate sketches of the conflict.
  3.  From Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper December 6, 1879. Colorado-The Ute Outbreak and Massacre at the White River Agency-The Ruins After the Fire and Massacre.-From a Sketch by Lieutenant C.A.H. McCauley, Third U.S. Cavalry. Also known as Meeker's Massacre, this engraving shows the grave of N.C. Meeker the government agent to the White River Agency.   Mounted in mat board and shrink wrapped. $40.00 for all three

Collection of 12 leaves with 13 images from Gladys Richard's Navajo Medicine Man: Sandpaintings and Legends of Miguelito

These are quite likely artist proofs pulled by Fred Geary. Most are in very good to fine condition while several have proof marks and other extraneous marks, intended or not. Very light creasing to several of the plates. Fred Geary was in charge of art and decorating for the Fred Harvey restaurant system of the Santa Fe Railroad. He did many drawings by the Fred Harvey & Company, whose personnel ran the restaurants for the Santa Fe Railroad hotels and train-car service. Geary is perhaps best known for his woodcuts, yet later in his career he began producing serigraphs and was hired to print the 24 serigraphs for Gladys Richard's Navajo Medicine Man. This set of 12 includes two sets of progressive serigraphs, adding a color not used on the previous screen. Interestingly, one plate has an additional single-color screen on the verso. All are printed on a thin brown rag paper and would present beautifully framed. A unique set from a relatively rare and important book of Navajo sand paintings. $750.00

Collotype Glacier National Park-Roland Reed

Sepia toned collotype photo 12 ¾ x 19 ½ mounted on brown board over modern foam core measuring 16 x 22 ½ inches. Metallic silver print at bottom of mount, "Early Indian Method of Transportation-Travais Glacier National Park." In shrinkwrap. The silver text appears to be stenciled.  The image with a typical Glacier background shows a Piegan Blackfeet woman on horse with cradle board and travois. Clearly posed for commercial uses.

This image was almost certainly made between the years 1912 and 1915, when the Great Northern Railway was encouraging tourism through the "See America First- Great Northern Railway - National Park Route" promotional campaign. Louis W. Hill, President of the Great Northern, was eager to promote tourism in the newly created Glacier National Park, primarily because his was the only rail line servicing the area. As part of this effort, he created an extensive promotional campaign that attached the Great Northern Railway logo and branding to the "See America First" slogan first espoused by Stanford Harris of Salt Lake City from 1905-1909. Roland Reed in 1909 opened a studio in Kalispell, MT, near what would become the western entrance to Glacier National Park. In addition to portrait photography work, he sold copies of his Indian photographs and Native pottery, baskets, and rugs in area curio shops.  Reed was a picturialist, an off-shoot of European Impressionism which used light and focus as photographic tools. $750.

Pair of Linen Broadsides 'Look Out For Fire' New York Forest Commission

Each broadside measures approx. 17 ¾ x 19 ½ inches on linen. Bold wood block text at head followed by the rules and laws regarding fire for the state of New York. Typical loose threads along edges. Bold black text.  One broadside dated 1893, other not dated however circa 1888. 1888 broadside identifies the printer as Brandow Printing Company, Albany, N.Y. Purchased on a scouting trip back east in 2018 and like some items on this list consigned to the warehouse for reasons unknown. I do admit to harboring a fondness for linen and silk broadsides.  $325.00

Taos Pueblo, Facsimile Edition Ansel Adams and Mary Austin

Bound in brick red linen boards and original half tan calf binding, housed in original matching linen slipcase. "Taos" stamped in blind near top front board of calf binding. Slipcase lightly soiled with minor edge wear. Book itself in near fine condition. This facsimile makes somewhat affordable the text and photos from the original 1930 edition which has become somewhat of a grail of books of the American Southwest. Signed limited edition, one of only 950 copies. Signed by photographer Ansel Adams. The facsimile mirrors the design of Edwin and Robert Grabhorn along with the typographical genius of Frederic Goudy, designer of the New Style typeface which was handset by the Grabhorns. Adams' 12 photos capture the stark beauty of Taos Pueblo coupled with the words of Mary Austin who in describing Taos Pueblo says "The real mystery of creation resides in things, in the mystery of invisible energies which all our science struggles to resolve, spiritual energies which by their coalition constitute the Thing Itself." $1250.00

4 plans from the Emory Report on the Mexican War, published 1847 by Wendell & Van Benthuysen, 1847. All disbound in very good condition with previous fold marks. Verso blank on all four maps.

  1.  Sketch of the Actions fought at San Pascal in Upper California between the Americans and Mexicans Dec. 6th & 7th, 1846.  Detailed Mexican War Battle plan, depicting one of the very few battles fought in California during the Mexican War. The battle, which occurred not far from the present site of the San Diego Wild Animal Park in North San Diego County, is depicted in great detail, including the various positions of the Mexicans and Americans during the two day battle, routes, and encampments. The San Pascual Indian Village is also shown. The battle was led by Stephen Kearny, with 400 men. When he ran into difficulties, another 40 marines were sent from San Diego by Commodore Stockton. Mexican War Battle plans are relatively uncommon. From Emory's Report.
  2. Sketch accompanying Col. Price's despatch of 18 April, 1847. This battle plan depicts the route of the Col. Sterling Price's movements during the Mexican-American War on 18th April,1847 along the road from Santa Fe to Canada, near the Rio Chicito (Little Colorado River or Flax River). The movements of the army are clearly marked with topography beautifully depicted and enemy positions marked.
  3. Sketch accompanying Col. Price Despatch. Map of the Siege of the Pueblo de Taos.Centered on the pueblo with the Red Willow Creek running through it, the map illustrates the deployment of Colonel Sterling Price's men as he laid siege to the Pueblo de Taos, the final stronghold of the insurrectionists that started the Taos Revolt only a few weeks prior to the siege with the murder of Territorial Governor Charles Bent.
  4. Sketch accompanying Col. Price's Despatch of 15th Feb. 1847. This battle plan depicts the route of the Col. Sterling Price's movements during the Mexican-American War in 1847 between Embudo and La Joya, Mexico near the Rio del Norte. The movements of the army are clearly marked. $300 for the seat of four maps.

22 issues of the Tribune Citizen, Albuquerque, New Mexico April 12, 1910 to May 20, 1910

This short-lived newspaper featured a somewhat sensational look at world and local news and is just a hoot to read the headlines. The banner claims "Largest Bona-fide Circulation in New Mexico". These 22 issues on typical early 20th century newsprint stock which is deteriorating but still a good resource for the amateur historian or archivist. $50.00
