Below are September 2016 excerpts from On the House, a blog TSAHC launched in 2014 on affordable housing topics. We invite you to drop by On the House as we explore important issues, provide an inside look into our programs, and share other valuable resources.
Preservation Versus New Construction - Why Not Both?
Recent data leaves little doubt that Texas faces a shortage of affordable housing. The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates the state needs 595,231 more affordable units to address the needs of renters earning up to 30% of the area median income.
Need Help with Your Down Payment? Consider a Matched Savings Program
Do you want to buy a home, but you're worried you don't have enough for the down payment?  You’re in good company.  Numerous studies, including this 2016 Trulia survey, found that most American households consider the down payment to be the largest obstacle preventing them from buying a home.
Understanding the Eviction Process
In his best-selling book Evicted released earlier this year, author and sociologist Matthew Desmond recounts the distressing stories of tenants struggling to pay rent and dealing with the consequences. Desmond notes that nationally, nearly one in eight low-income families was unable to pay all of its rent.
Remodeling Projects: Which Ones Are Worth the Investment?
One of the most exciting things about buying a home is that you can make it your own.  From the paint colors to the floor plan, owning a home gives you the ability to customize everything to fit your specific wants and needs. As an added benefit, many improvements add value to your home, helping you protect and grow your investment.
