Inspiration Matters
With Kathy Nimmer
|
|
My students in creative writing were brainstorming natural occurrences
and normal tendencies in this world that they could potentially change
up in a fairy tale world. They talked about what it would be like if it was normal to walk on our hands instead of our feet, what red snow would be like instead of white, and how dating would be different if clapping meant serious romantic interest. For the latter, they giggled over the image of a couple clapping at each other in a fancy restaurant instead of making smoochy faces! I laughed as I listened to them, and a large reason for that laughter was their sustained ability to think outside the box. These were students 16-years-old or older, and yet, when given permission to be original thinkers, they still knew how to do it.
It is easy for us to be married to predictability. Following rules, checking off standards, and fulfilling requirements in our workplace and beyond will get us from here to there, but that journey is much less interesting if we chop off the creativity that once characterized us as little children. I loved witnessing my teenage students innovate like this, but it made me sad too because their originality made me realize how long it has been since I let whimsy lead my thought patterns. I'm guessing that the thinkers and doers out there--the ones who are soaring in the business world and beyond--retain the kind of thinking my creative writers were doing. I wonder how much better we would be at this adult thing if we too cultivated and protected whimsy. It might be worth a try.
