SANTA RITA RAIN GARDEN

Agribusiness teacher, Josh Ruddick and his students collaborated with community partners including Arizona Project WETNOAA Education and Outreach to beautify their campus, by designing and installing a rain garden. On March 16, 2018 Cultural Ecologist Joaquin Murrieta Saldivar coordinated the implementation of a Food Forest Rain Garden combining passive and active systems to harvest the rain. This is part of the Recharge the Rain project, a 4-year-long project.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

Tucson Unified CTE students from Pueblo, Sabino, Tucson High and University High participated in the 2017-2018 year-long after school opportuity: The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA).
Through the program, students generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their own companies.
A few of the outstanding programs that earned seed money to start their companies included:
  • Victor Moreno and Steven Ruiz, THMS, who started a business called Plantit. PlantIt is a mobile and web app developed by students for students. Many seniors were not prepared for college applications. The app allows students to see their college requirements and build long term plans to get into their dream college. It is PlanIt's goal for students to not only go to college but go to their college. PlanIt sells directly to schools and it's current long term goal is to continue to open this opportunity to more and more students.
  •  Savanna Obergon, THMS and Luz Martinez, UHS collaborated on a business called Tucson Tech. Tucson Tech locally distributes Turn Ups Headphones and Portable Speaker and with each sale a portion of profits goes toward developing "Turn-it-Up", an affordable option for students of the Arizona State School for Deaf and Blind  and our gift of music to them.
  •  Cole Sohn, a senior at University High started a business called Virtual RealityUniversity(VRU)  VRU is immersive and interactive VR lessons that can be accessed by students using a smartphone device and a cheap cardboard virtual reality headset to bring engagement and visual understanding to traditional high school curriculums. It is already being used in an AP Art History Class at university High School but we hope to bring VRU to new districts and learning institutions.
  • Enrique Castillon, a UHS senior started a business called EQUAL VOICE US.
Equal Voice US  is the next generation of networking between constituents and elected officials of any sort. The organization allows anyone to draft a proposal to send to their elected officials or upload online for their peers to vote on. It places the power back into people's hands and restores their right to initiate change all in one easy to use website
