North Dakota's Economy
North Dakota's economy is thriving with strong agriculture, education, technology, and a flourishing energy development sector. Although agriculture is not represented yet as a topic on ND Compass, we recognize its importance to the long-term well-being of our state, our country, and the world.
In recent years, soybeans have become an increasingly important commodity in the North Dakota agricultural landscape, ranking second beyond wheat in production value. Soybeans have a variety of uses from food products and animal feed to hundreds of industrial applications. This month's For Discussion column features a short glimpse into the soybean industry provided by representatives of soybean growers associations at the state and national level.
Looking at the economic development of North Dakota's communities, the Ask a Researcher column presents a tool that measures the strength of the retail business in North Dakota's cities and towns. One of the research findings is that "Clearly, the expansion of the economy in the oil development area is having a significant effect on the retail sales in cities in northwestern North Dakota."
