There are so many exciting activities scheduled to take place at the Homeschool Resource Center for the upcoming school year.  You are invited to come to our Back to School Sampler on August 12th from 11-3.  Feel free to come and go as you please but parents must stay with their children.  We will have rotating activities throughout the day for the kids to try, information tables set up to fill you in on homeschool classes and activities and The Book Nook (homeschool, educational and family friendly bookstore) will be open for business.

Volleyball Season and Tryout Information


The Tampa Bay HEAT will have multiple opportunities for your child (4th-8th grade boys and girls and high school girls) to participate and compete in the great game of volleyball. The volleyball season begins in August and runs thru October. We will also have middle school and high school boys only teams starting in March. Players of all skill levels are invited to participate. 

JV 4th-6th grade boys and girls team (co-ed) will play in the Brandon Chrisitian Athletic League (BCAL). They are finalizing their schedule but games will most likely be on Mondays and Fridays at 3:30.  Most games take place in Brandon but there are a couple of Tampa schools that we may be scheduled to play. Games will begin the first week of September.  Athletes will practice 2-3 days per week until games begin and then they will practice 1-2 days per week, depending on the game schedule.  The weekly commitment will be no more than 3 days, including games and practices.  Registration is $50 for the season (includes jersey).  There will be 8-10 games.  Tryouts will take place on Wednesday, August 10th and 17th from 1-3 at East Point Assembly of God (5337 Garden Lane, Tampa 33610). Please RSVP for this activity to allow us to prepare our coaching staff.

 

Varsity 7th and 8th grade boys and girls team (co-ed) will play in the Brandon Chrisitian Athletic League (BCAL). 5th-8th Grade Elite Girls Volleyball Team will play on the above BCAL teams (5th-6th graders with the JV and 7th-8th grade with Varsity).  They will also play 8 additional (see below) girls only games against the schools that our high school team will play.  Middle school games will take place immediately prior to the high school games. Registration is $75 (includes jersey).  There will be 16-18 games. Tryouts will take place on Wednesday, August 10th and 17th from 1-3 at East Point Assembly of God (5337 Garden Lane, Tampa 33610). Please RSVP for this activity to allow us to prepare our coaching staff.

High School Girls Volleyball Team will compete in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA).
Please RSVP for this activity to allow us to prepare our coaching staff. There is also mandatory FHSAA paperwork that must be completed and turned in before your child can tryout.

Career Day at the Homeschool Resource Center
October 7th 

Times and schedule to be announced!

 

There are so many benefits of homeschooling and very few (good things) that our kids miss out on. One thing that I always enjoyed then I was in school was Career Day.  I am organizing a Career Day at the Homeschool Resource Center.  If you or your spouse has an interesting career and would be interested in coming and giving a short talk to the kids, please let me know.  We will divide the kids up by elementary-age 12 and teens and up to allow the speakers to cater to each age group. Family Membership for the 2011-2012 School Year is $40. Please click here to go to our webpage registration.

The Tampa Bay HEAT offers support and activities to all homeschoolers but HEAT members receive discounts on many HEAT activities, free Notary service, and the opportunity to advertise your business in our Business Spotlight and at the Homeschool Resource Center free of charge.  Many of the activities that we offer require membership for insurance purposes.

If you plan to join the HEAT for the 2011-2012 School Year, please register as soon as possible.  We would like to complete as much paperwork as possible over the summer, since things get crazy once the school year begins.  We will have registration through out the year for new families.

We are a FPEA recognized support group and you will be able to join the FPEA at a reduced rate of $20 for the 2011-2012 school year through the HEAT.  FPEA membership entitles you to discounts at many local homeschool friendly businesses and a reduced admission to the FPEA Convention held in May in Orlando.  We will make our next FPEA submission on August 8th.  If you miss this deadline, it will be January before the next submission!

Tampa Bay HEAT Film Festival 2011

Calling all movie makers!!!
Get your friends together and make a movie to entertain us :)

By entering the festival you will help raise money to support Tampa Bay HEAT. We will sell tickets for the film festival.   

 

This year's category is HERO VS VILLAIN!    

 

Choose your favorite hero (Batman, Superman, Captain America, Jedi...) or make up your own superhero.
Will your movie be funny? Slap stick? Serious? Will you make us cry? It's up to you and your friends.

 

This is a student run project

 

  • Students must be the only ones acting, creating and directing.  Parents may give advice and help with editing as needed.
  • The movie should be 5-15 minutes long
  • Make sure your movie is rated E-10, so everyone can enjoy
  • Put your movie on a DVD and submit by October 29th.  This will allow us to preview the movies before the showing.

We will have a movie night on November 11th at 7:00 PM.  Tickets and concessions will be sold to raise money for the Tampa Bay HEAT and the Homeschool Resource Center. Look for emails very soon regarding registration.

Dance Quest is Coming to the HRC!

Be on the lookout for a full schedule of Homeschool Dance Classes (tap, jazz, lyrical ballet, hip hop for all ages and levels) that will start in September! 

 

We are thrilled to announce that Dance Quest will be offering classes at the Homeschool Resource Center. This organization is well established in the Christian School setting (on site instruction) and will now offer classes in the HRC Dance Studio.  

 

This is a Christian organization that will nurture your children, while teaching dance at a high level.  Please go to dancequestonline.com for more information.

 

We are finalizing the schedule (classes will begin the first week of September).  There will be classes offered for all age groups in ballet, jazz, tap, funk and hip hop for boys and girls. The Ballet classes will learn fundamentals of Vagonava and other styles of Ballet. The Jazz classes will explore the basics of Jazz, Funk, and today's Hip-Hop dance moves. 

 

DANCE QUEST supports a superior program that builds a foundation with each child to develop correct and proper body posture, muscular control and coordination, and to correct body inadequacies without strain. In addition, children will learn to utilize several dance qualities such as: balance, coordination, flexibility, grace and showmanship.

Rummage Sale September 24th

We will have a major fundraiser on September 24th.  The Tampa Bay HEAT Rummage Sale will take place at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Brandon.  There will be great bargains and something for everybody.  Here are a few ways you can help:

 

1. Come and shop
2. Donate items for the sale.  We have a storage location and can come and pick up the items or you can drop them at the HRC or our storage location.
3. Help organize, price, load or work at the sale (earn HEAT rewards to use towards HEAT activities)
4. Pray for a successful event!
5. Rent a space for $25 if you have items to sell or a business to advertise.

Fun Summer Activities

August
Drama Camp will take place August 1-August 5th from 9-12 (age 8-12) or 1-4 pm (age 13 and up) at the Homeschool Resource Center.  Hal Granholm, an experienced actor who stays busy at the Crossing Church in the youth ministry, will lead this camp.  Participants will learn Drama basics and focus on Improv.  Hal currently leads our Drama Club and is wonderful with the kids.  There will be a performance for the parents on the last day of camp. Registration is $60 ($50 for HEAT members).  Click here to register.

Summer Art Camp will take place August 8-12 from 9-12 (age 7-12) or 1-4 (age 13 and up) at the Homeschool Resource Center.  Dustin Goolsby, an experienced artist and instructor, will teach this course.  Participants will experience drawing, painting, sculpture, pastels and other techniques. $80 for HEAT members and $90 for non-HEAT members.  Click here to register.

Summer Social Activities

Christian Skate Night
We are pleased to invite you to Christian Skate Night at Skateland of Brandon, located at 750 W. Robertson St. in Brandon.  When you tell the cashier that you are there as a guest of the Tampa Bay HEAT, you will receive a discounted admission.  $2 per person includes regular skate rental.  This is a teen activity but families are welcome to attend with a parent to supervise younger kids. This takes place from 7-9 PM on the following dates:

We have basketball and volleyball camps coming in July to introduce your new athlete to sports and prepare them for the upcoming sports seasons. Register at tampabayheat.org.

We are pleased to announce our Christian Drama Club for the 2011-2012 School Year.  
The club is led by Hal Granholm, an experienced actor who stays busy at the Crossing Church in the youth ministry.
The first semester will include Introduction to Drama, Improv and creative scene writing.  The plan is to involved the kids in a full production in the spring.  Plays will be family friendly and appropriate for this age group.
The registration fee is $40 for HEAT members or $45 for non-HEAT members.

Chess Club

We are pleased to announce that Stephen Crookston will be leading a Chess Club for the 2011-2012 school year.  This will take place at the Homeschool Resource Center.  This club is for ages 4 and up and will challenge all skill levels.  Coach Stephen is well known and respected in the Chess Community.  All supplies and facility fees are included.

2011-2012 School Year Class Offerings

Dave Ramsey's Foundations in Personal Finance Course

 

The Tampa Bay HEAT is sponsoring a Dave Ramsey Foundations in Personal Finance Course that will start this August.  This course is intended for high school and college aged students.  The hours from this course can be counted towards a high school credit.  Classes will take place at the Homeschool Resource Center, located at 307 S. Parsons Ave. in Brandon on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 PM. There will be twenty-four classes.  

 

This course will be taught by Larry Manganello.  He has taught this course, as well as Dave Ramsey's Generation Change, to numerous home school students.  He is a professional educator and graduate of the Certified Financial Planner Professional Education Program.  His style is very entertaining and he will make the often dry subject of finance interesting.

Spanish 1 for High School Credit

A hybrid Spanish 1 course for high school students will take place at the HRC beginning in August. Students will meet every other week on Thursdays from 12-2.  The first class has filled but there are a few spaces for the second class.  Tuition is $200 for the school year plus $15 per semester facility fee.

Homework is to complete online assignments in a multimedia platform that complements the material covered in class.

Average time of homework completion is two hours per week. Quizzes and tests are taken from home. 

*Weekly Office Hours available to students for individual help. Two hours per week to be held via email, phone or online forum.

Textbook:  $45 for an online access code for "Aventuras-Primer Curso de Lengua Espaņola" (valid for 24 months) at www.vhldirect.com. 

 *This online textbook can be used for Years 1 and 2 of Spanish.  The access code is a one time purchase.

IEW, Middle School Spanish and Book Discussion Groups

 

The following Writing and Spanish classes are scheduled for parents to allow students to conveniently participate in each class back to back. 

 

Also, Book Discussions are the perfect way to keep your child continually engaged in quality reading material.  This program is unique because it offers an intelligent and structured discussion and activity time at the end of the six weeks of reading.

 

Students must pre-register for all opportunities, which are being led by high quality instructors.

 

 

Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW)

Beginning Wednesday, September 14

This award winning writing curriculum teaches students to write well, think clearly and adequately express themselves.  IEW teaches students to write in a unique and engaging manner.  Vocabulary, spelling and punctuation will be a main focus, as well.  Classes will meet once a week on Wednesday from September-May.

 

Kimberly Meck is the instructor for these courses.  She has 25 years of teaching experience, which includes 12 years of homeschooling her own children.  She is eager to pass on this valuable life skill of writing.

Introduction to Spanish

(PreK-8th Grade)

Introduce your young children to the Spanish language!  It is statistically proven that it is easier to learn a foreign language in the early years.  A variety of methods will be used during class to instill the language.  Reinforcing materials will be sent home each week.  Classes will meet once a week on Wednesday from September-May.

 

Our experienced Cuban born teacher is patient and eager to immerse your child in this very useful second language.

Book Discussions

3rd Grade through High School

$60 for all five discussions.  Includes Discussion materials, snacks, facility fee

 

Here is an opportunity for your children to read five high quality, family friendly, books throughout the school year! 

 

There will be one Discussion meeting per book.  Discussion times will consist of fun learningopportunities, engaging activities and snacks! 

 

There are so many perks to having this open to 3rd Graders through High Schoolers: all readers in your family can be involved with the same book, which means one day and time to bring them all and, the younger readers in the Discussion group will learn from the older readers. 

 

The Discussions will consist of a large group time, but will also have break out sessions by grade level.

 

Discussion meeting will be on the second Wednesdays of October/December/February/April/May from 4:30-6:00.

 

With a love of books and 25 years of teaching experience, Kimberly Meck will be leading each Discussion.

Art Classes at the HRC

The Homeschool Resource Center (307 S. Parsons Ave.) is pleased to host Dustin Goolsby for Art Classes for the upcoming school year.  Dustin currently teaches homeschool students at Class Source in Tampa and at Florida College Academy.  He is a graduate of Florida College and a professional artist.  Mr. Dustin's classes are entertaining and very productive!  Class fees listed include one hour classes, supplies and facility fees. Fall 2011 Art Schedule

Art Explorations (age 6-9) $150 for 16 weeks of instruction (1 hour lessons). Includes supply and facility fees.

Drawing and Sketching (age 10-13 and 14 and up)

Chorus I Class for 2011-2012. 

Gabriela has been teaching piano for 4 years. Having learned conducting and sung in numerous choirs for churches and shows, she is excited to be teaching young people choral singing as well. After 11 years of music study and completing an extensive internship, she is graduating with a Music Studies degree from USF in the Fall. 

2011-2012 Schedule

Ages 12 and up. for 30 weeks of instruction. Class fees listed include one hour classes, supplies, and facility fees. 

Starting 9/7 Wednesdays from 1:45-2:45 PM and running for 30 weeks (no class Thanksgiving week and December) and ending in May.

Pay by month $30 (HEAT Members) non HEAT Members pay $35 per month
Pay for the year -$180 (HEAT Members) non-HEAT Members pay $210 for the year.

Homeschool Modeling Class

Tiffany Bell, a model, and owner of Motivated Steps will offer
 a four week modeling class series that will teach basic modeling and industry standards, lessons in introductions, speaking skills, confidence exercises and making a positive impression.

 

The class will take place on Tuesdays starting September 13th from 12:30-2:30 at the Homeschool Resource Center (307 S. Parsons Ave. in Brandon, 33511).  

 

Registration for the four week session is $40. Girls need to attend the whole 4 week session and not just parts, since each week would build upon previous lessons.

Pottery Classes

Sculpt Your Own Nativity Set Class

Back by popular demand is our Nativity set class!  Christmas will be here before you know, and now is the time to get started creating a family heirloom.  The pieces of the Nativity will be sculpted with clay and kiln fired to create a lasting treasure. This class is for ages 4 to adult. 

 

Classes are Mondays from 9:45 to 10:45 at the Homeschool Resource Center.  Class dates include: 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 11/7, 11/14, 11/28, 12/5, 12/12

Create in Clay

 

The Pottery Place will be offering free-sculpt classes twice a month at the Homeschool Resource Center.  This is an opportunity for you to make your own clay masterpieces.  We will sculpt during the first class and paint during the second class of each month.  The pieces will be kiln fired to make lasting treasures.

 

Basic instruction will be given on how to hand build with clay.  However, the purpose of these sessions is to allow kids to use their imaginations and make their own designs.  The instructor, Alison Hamm, will be available to assist as needed.

 

Pottery classes will be held on Tuesdays.  Elementary aged students will meet from 2:30 to 3:15.  Middle and high school students will meet from 3:30 to 4:15.  Pricing includes 1 1/2 pounds of clay per student and all paints and glazes needed.

Session 3: 11/8 and 11/15

Session 4: 12/6 and 12/13

The Homeschool Resource Center (HRC)

The Homeschool Resource Center is open during The Book Nook's regular business hours as well as during class sessions offered at the facility.  We are happy to speak with you by phone at (813) 361-5433, or by appointment.  An updated newsletter is available in the mailbox on the front of the building.

 

 

Please HELP the HRC by donating items for our Rummage Sale scheduled for September 24th and our Used Book Sale scheduled for March 17, 2012.  There are collection boxes located inside the HRC or items can be dropped off at our storage location.  Call Teresa at 361-5433 to arrange for a drop off.

 

 

The HRC is pleased to offer so many activities for homeschool families.  We are a self-funded ministry and are always thankful for donations.  Here are a few items that we are looking for to assist our programs.  We are a 501c3, so your donation may be tax deductible.
