What's Your Story?

Daniel "Herm" Jerome

Like many young teachers, my plan was to "try out" teaching for a couple of years and move on.

Herm I had been politically active for many years, involved in fighting police brutality and anti-war work.  Feeling disillusioned after a brief stint as a union organizer, I decided to give teaching a shot. Fortunately I landed a job at a small school in the Lower East Side where the Principal allowed me to work with the students on political issues, organizing against police brutality and on behalf of Mumia Abu Jamal.  I was even given the opportunity to teach a "community organizing" class.  Unfortunately, most of this work was done in isolation of other teachers and with no connection to our union.

Recognizing that bringing issues of social justice students was not sufficient, I began to work with other educators to bring issues of social justice to teachers. No doubt this proved far more challenging than politicizing and mobilizing young people.

Teachers Unite understands that we must do more than bring social justice to the classroom.  We must challenge our colleagues to fight for a democratic union, work together to develop alternatives to our current disciplinary system that pushes students out of school into jails and organize with parents to develop democratic schools.

Our members are not only speaking out, they are acting out!

  • They help schools organize Restorative Justice Teams.

  • They collaborate with youth organizations to change the city's School Discipline Code.

  • They produce media and resources that envision a humanistic approach to student discipline.

  • They transform their own school cultures and advocate to the DOE and UFT for help with doing so.

We have to show parents and young people that teachers are opposed to social and economic injustice.  Please click here to donate today. Thank you for your support!
