Our Keynote Speaker

Maryellen Weimer, PhD, professor emerita at Penn State University and recipient of Penn State's Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching, is one of the nation's most highly regarded authorities on effective college teaching.

Since 1987 Dr. Weimer has been the editor of The Teaching Professor newsletter and she authors several books as well as The Teaching Professor blog. (The Teaching Professor blog is a free online resource. Contact otl@du.edu if you'd like to be added to the distribution list for The Teaching Professor Newsletter).

Highlights of her career include teaching Communications courses and First Year Seminars, serving as the Associate Director of the National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (U.S. Department of Education) and serving as Senior Research Associate at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Penn State.

On the morning of Feb 8th, Dr. Weimer will facilitate a workshop called "The Keys to Successful Group Work" where we will learn strategies for forming groups successfully, identifying tasks that work for a variety of contexts, and assessing group projects. Later that day she will deliver a luncheon keynote on "The Responsibility for Learning" where we will explore the relationship between teaching and learning with the goal of clarifying how professors can constructively hold students responsible for learning.

Inclusive Excellence and Our Teaching

In December, more than 170 dedicated faculty members took a day away from research, writing, and other pursuits to learn how inclusive excellence can be operationalized in their classes.  The Inclusive Excellence and Our Teaching workshop was designed to address realistic challenges and opportunities as we explored how to manage classroom discussions, create syllabi, identify effective content resources, and help students work in groups (just as a few examples), all with a focus on inclusion.

For those who were unable to attend in person, we have posted the resource packet from the workshop and a variety of related materials on our website .  In addition, we'll be offering even more workshops and learning opportunities on these topics throughout the remainder of the academic year.  Watch for more information on our website and in the DU Digest.

Documenting Your Teaching Practice

Are you looking for different or additional methods for documenting your teaching practice for annual review or P&T purposes? The OTL has been collecting and creating resources and examples to help you tell a more comprehensive and complete story about your teaching. Visit these resources, contact us to schedule an individual consultation, or let us know what additional ideas or resources we can help you explore!

DU Portfolio Update

The Office of Teaching and Learning has released a major update to the DU Portfolio system. Long time users of DU Portfolio will see some significant additions and enhancements as even more customization options are now available. We've also spent considerable time on both visual and procedural refinements. Visit our website for a complete list of new features.

Related to this, please Save the Date for a presentation (with lunch!) and afternoon workshop on March 8 with Kathleen Yancey, of Florida State University.  She'll be addressing the value of ePortfolios for reflective learning and ways to integrate this technology into the classroom. More info to come!

OneNewThing

OTL's mini-grants program, OneNewThing, is designed to help you explore ways to make your classes even better - one strategy, tool, or activity at a time.

If you're interested in submitting a proposal for a OneNewThing mini-grant, visit our   OneNewThing web page for guidelines and to submit the proposal form. The due date to submit a proposal for Spring quarter is Monday, March 6.
