This weekend: Visit from Rabbi Noah Farkas

Rabbi Noah Farkas will be visiting us this coming weekend, March 16-18. The following events will be open to everyone and we encourage you to attend:
 
Friday morning: Rabbi Farkas will be visiting with our Nursery School children.  
 
Friday evening at 5:15 pm: Rabbi Farkas will join in Shabbat Hamudim with Rabbi Ari, Cantor Mordecai and families with young children, to welcome Shabbat. Friday evening beginning at 5:50 pm Minhah, Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv: Rabbi Farkas will be giving a D'var Torah.
 
Saturday morning at 8:45 am (Rosh Hodesh Nisan): Rabbi Farkas will be joining in Shabbat services and giving a D'var Torah around 11:10 am, and visiting the Simhat Shabbat service (for children grades K-2 and their parents) at 10:45 am in rooms D & E. Kiddush will be followed by a Community Question and Answer Session with Rabbi Farkas in the Milstein Sanctuary beginning about one hour after the start of Kiddush. Supervised activities for children will take place downstairs beginning at 12:45 pm until 2:45 pm so that parents can attend. 
Note, there will be an extended community Kiddush, so for those who would like to continue celebrating, and also for any other members who cannot attend the Q&A on Saturday, we have scheduled a second Q&A session on Sunday (see details below).
 
Saturday afternoon at 6:20 pm: Minhah followed by Seudah Shelishit and Ma'ariv. Rabbi Farkas will be leading Minhah, reading Torah, and teaching at the Seudah Shelishit.
 
Sunday morning minyan at 9:00 am: Rabbi Farkas will lead services. 9:30 am: Meeting with Board of Trustees combined with a Q&A session for those who cannot attend Q&A on Shabbat. 10:45 am: Rabbi Farkas will teach in Shorashim. 11:45 am: Rabbi Farkas will participate in a teen meeting with 8th -12th graders.

Your input in the Rabbi Search process is critical. We will be reaching out to you to complete a survey and will be holding a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 in the Milstein Sanctuary to hear your thoughts. More details will follow. You should also feel free to personally reach out to any member of the Rabbi Search Committee whose names are set forth below. We very much want to hear from you!

This Sunday: Israel Action Committee - Eric Mandel Event 

Dr. Eric Mandel has returned from his annual seminar in Israel, and will speak at Hebrew Institute on Sunday morning, March 18 - bagels/coffee at 9:30 and presentation at 10:00. 

His topic this year is "Israel 2018: The Iranian Northern Frontier, The Future of the JCPOA, and Israel's Arab Citizens."  This promises to be another stimulating and highly educational event.  Admission is free. View flyer here.

HappyFeet will be running a camp here at TIC during the Passover school break. The HappyFit Multi-Sport Fitness & Fun mini-camp will run Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm and includes lunch brought from home! Your children will be active, learning, laughing, socializing, getting a wonderful fitness workout & having a huge amount of fun! And we'll have a TIC teacher working with Happyfit's amazing coaches each day!

SHORASHIM AND HAVURAT TORAH NEWS  

Snow Days:
In the event of a weather-related closing:
On Sundays, the decision to close Shorashim will be made by 7:00 am.  On weekdays, Shorashim and Havurat Torah will be canceled if either White Plains or Scarsdale public schools are closed.  If those public schools are open but decide to cancel after-school activities, we will also cancel Shorashim and Havurat Torah on those days.  We will relay this information to all our families by the following methods: 
  • Call us at 914-948-2800, ext. 158 (our weather-related phone extension) to hear a voice message from the Education Office when there are weather-related school closings to report.
     
  • We will provide this information to Channel 12 news.
  • An email will be sent to all our Shorashim and HT families.

Help deliver Passover packages to homebound, poor and isolated elderly in Co Op City.
This social action family event is in lieu of regular Shorashim learning for the 6th grade.

We are thrilled to cap the weekend with an EVENING OF CELEBRATION AND APPRECIATION to honor Rabbi Gordon Tucker and Amy Cohn on Sunday, April 29, 2018, in anticipation of the Rabbi's retirement at the end of June.

March for Our Lives Westchester County 
March 24, 2018

Students in Westchester County ask everyone to join in the March For Our Lives of Westchester County, to express solidarity for ending gun violence and school shootings. This is a non-partisan, student-led event to raise awareness and spark change surrounding firearm legislation in the United States. Parallel marches nationwide have gathered enormous attention across the country.  Please come with your friends, family, classmates, and peers.  

The march begins in White Plains on Saturday March 24  at 1:00 PM at the Post Road School, and ends at the MLK Monument by the County Courthouse. The mission is to demand that effective legislation be introduced in Congress to address gun violence and school safety issues.  The timing of the march has been sensitively set to enable the Jewish community to attend. The Westchester Group Psychotherapy Society and Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health are co-sponsoring a theatrical event at the JCC that illuminates the value of psychotherapy in processing family trauma.  The performance entitled "Decoding the Tablecloth" is a one woman family memoir written and performed by Gabriela Kohen, and it explores the impact of trauma over five generations of Kohen's family, and also her experiences as an immigrant girl growing up Jewish and Latina in New York.   From pre-Holocaust Poland to the tango halls of Argentina, to disco-era Brooklyn, Gabriela portrays over 20 characters as she weaves her family's struggles to belong to their unique cultural identity.

Polyphony Quartet Concert: Building Bridges Between Arab and Jewish Youth

Join us as a quartet of Arab and Jewish high school age musicians, under the baton of Polyphony co-founder Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar, treat us to a performance of classical music.
 
Polyphony helps bridge the divide and foster a more civil society by bringing together Arab and Jewish children in Israel, through music. They provide music education opportunities for young Israelis from all backgrounds.
 
Today, Polyphony is the fastest-growing music program in Israel, supported by popular international musicians like David Broza, Branford Marsalis, Ian Anderson, Zubin Mehta and Renée Fleming.

HUNGRY & HOMELESS Winter Update

Look at what we've done as a community...We responded generously to the Yom Kippur Appeal
and can take pride in having donated approximately  $20,000.00 to local organizations feeding, housing and supporting county residents.

MAH JONGG WITH SISTERHOOD 

Sisterhood holds mah jongg games on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m

"We play for tzedakah/charity, one game at a time."  Players need not be Sisterhood or Temple Israel Center members.

J-Teen Leadership Disaster Area Relief Service Trips (DARST)

Thanks to a generous grant from Time for Good, a UJA-Federation initiative, J-Teen will be leading seven Disaster Area Relief Service Trips (DARST) to Houston and Florida this year! High schoolers (grades 9-12) will work together to help those affected by the recent hurricanes through hands-on work and social action.

Would you like to help someone who doesn't? 

Join the TIC Food Volunteers!  We prepare more than 150 meals on the first Sunday of every month for the hungry and homeless.  Meals are prepared in volunteers' homes and brought to TIC for transport to The Sharing Community in Yonkers, NY. MINYANIM AT TIC!
Support fellow congregants who want to pray in a community as well as those who are saying Kaddish.  It is an act of great kindness. We gather in the lrene Schwebel Chapel at 7:10 am Monday-Friday, at 8:00 pm Monday-Thursday, and at 9:00 am and 8:00 pm on Sunday.   Check our calendar for minyanim times on Shabbat.
