CAPTAIN YOGI'S USELESS
BUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Hello Everybody!
Well I would normally say welcome to fall but it looks like summer is trying to hang on for a couple of more weeks! No problem here. Looks like we’re in for a busy couple of months again.
Next weekend is our last road cleanup, hosted by the Hess’s and Breski’s, so we hope to see everyone out there with their LOUD orange and green vests and giving a hand. And of course, what road clean-up would be complete without a stop at the Blue Room! The more we have there, the sooner we get to the Blue Room!

Next would be the Meeting of the Minds. Once again, we have a good contingent going to the festivities this year, and contrary to the news reports, Key West is OPEN for business and awaiting our arrival. Most of the major damage was further up the Keys but still need our support, so spend your dollars on the ride down and a bunch when you get there!
Elections are coming and candidates will be announced at Octobers social and we appreciate Rick Clapper’s hard work in organizing and making contacts for the elections this year.
Yes, December is coming, crap! The one thing to look forward to is our annual Christmas Club Social with the always exciting gift exchange. Look for details in the next couple of weeks.
The 20 th anniversary of PHIAP is on and will be on March 10 th , 2018 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in West York (same hotel that the Spring Break was held last year). We plan to invite the PHIP Leaders Meeting on the same day and will be inviting all the leaders and any of their members that want to tag along. Sue McCaughey will be the chairman for the committee, so if you have any suggestions or things you would like to see. Details to follow.
On a final note, there has been a lot of tragedy over the past couple of months, we all were personally affected either directly or indirectly, by someone we know. There are many people that need our help and many ways to do so. Make sure when you do give, to be very careful and make sure you know where your money is going.

IS THIS MAN A GENIUS?

Here is an incredible breakdown of the most beloved and hated JB song!

Ask ten Parrot Heads what their favorite JB tune is and you will get ten different
answers.
Ask them what the least favorite song is and one particular song will win every time.
Ask any non-Parrot Head to name their favorite Buffett song, and this will be the one.
It is a staple of those guys with a six string and a barstool.
They dance a cha-cha line dance to it at the country bars.
It is ironic that the most popular JB song is also the one most hated, reviled, and
criticized by Parrot Heads.
I recently witnessed our resident minstrels hold a vote to see if the crowd wanted to
hear it, and the song lost.
JB calls it "the national anthem" and has named his empire after it.

Can you guess....Of course, it's Margaritaville.

Why the disdain, I ask you, why, why, why? I think we should do a detailed analysis of this perky little ditty. Well, maybe you don't want to, but I love examining perky little ditties, so here goes.

The tune begins with a bouncy intro that is unique and unmistakable. Like the intro to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, when you hear it, you know immediately what's coming next. You either smile in anticipation or groan in despair. However, it is the philosophy and wisdom of the song that makes it so important to our lives. Yea, it even forms the dogma for true happiness. The first line is prophetic to the meaning of the entire song. "Nibblin on sponge cake" is so profoundly subtle that some may miss it's wisdom entirely. Nibblin' is the process of consumption in small quantities that allows time for enjoyment of the flavor and makes the digestive process easy and gas free. Applied to life, we should take one day at a time and not worry about things that we cannot change, but deal with them as they occur. This will allow us to enjoy the beauty and pleasures that life offers without the discomfort of gassy buildup. "Sponge cake" symbolizes a light-hearted approach to life and the ability to bounce back when the weight of responsibility begins to mash you out of shape. The rest of the first verse enhances this idea. Relaxing on our "front porch swing", we idly enjoy the simple pleasures of music, relaxation and good food while the world bakes in the heat of worry about the next payment on the minivan, or envy of the darkest tan.

The second verse examines the expectations that society uses to judge whether our decisions are acceptable and to classify us as a success or failure. You claim that you "don't know the reason", but you are enjoying your life, so you stay "here all season". However, society's expectations lead you to real guilt for having 'nothing to show" for your life. In the race to accomplish some lofty goal or achieve some social or economic status, we often lose sight of what really brings us happiness. If you do what you enjoy and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks of you, life will become a "real beauty". Happiness will just happen, without a clue.

The third verse presents us with a way to overcome adversity or tragedy. Sometimes accidents like a blown out flip flop may lead to the tragedy of a cut heel. The disaster may be so great that you must abandon your current course of action and "cruise on back home". to reconsider the viability of trying again. But there is hope when you have the strength of faith to know that you can stand up to your trials and tribulations and that you will overcome. The blender symbolizes a covenant that promises if we put in the right ingredients, and do the right things, we will find the strength and courage to "hang on". Even though you may feel that your life is "wasted away again", hold on to the hope that you will find that "lost shaker  of salt"  and life will be good.  II is easy to deny responsibility  for our problems and blame others, though, as Freud conjectures about our mothers, there usually is a "woman to blame". Ultimately, we are responsible for how we deal with problems and how we let them affect us. Really, our life is our "own damn fault".

Or... Margaritaville could be a fantasy of a magical place where the living is easy, the women are cuties, and the tequila and limes are abundant. Try this experiment. Take fresh limes, tequila, triple sec, and a little water and sugar. Zest one lime, roll and juice them and mix with the other ingredients. Inhale the pungent fragrance of lime zest and juice, and the sweet, intoxicating aroma of the tequila. DO NOT use a mix, Rose's lime juice, or frozen concentrate. Fill a glass with ice. Put the song on and turn up the volume. I prefer the live version from "You Had To Be There". Pour the mixture slowly into the glass and watch it flow over the sparkling rocks. Top it off with a floater of tequila. Kick back, close your eyes, sip slowly and you will understand what Jimmy meant when he said "Where is Margaritaville?....Anywhere you want it to be".

“Long Story Short" - a CD Review by Bob Hess

I haven’t written a cd review for a long time but wanted to share my thoughts of Peter and Brendan Mayer’s “Long Story Short”. I got a copy at the Mayer-Kirby-Mayer concert in Reading some weeks ago.

Jane and I have been listening to Peter for over 15 years since we heard the “Stars and Promises” concert in Lancaster many years ago. We have all of Peter’s cds and have spent many an evening listening to them. I even have a vinyl (what’s that?) copy of his 1st album autographed by Peter and Jim. Roger’s autograph is nowhere to be seen (he’s famous for that.) So, I would not expect anything but a great recording from them; I was not disappointed.

The cd has 13 tunes, 10 originals and 3 covers. Peter, Brendan, and other composers/arrangers from the Reefers had a hand in the originals. Covers included songs by Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, and James Taylor.

All of the cuts are great with two really sticking in my mind - “Long Story Short” and “Ghost of a Son.” Peter and Brendan have also released a video on YouTube of “Starting With You” which is done very nicely. Brendan sings most of the lead parts, but there are many duets throughout the recordings and, of course, Peter’s voice is prevalent, also.

Speaking of covers - “The Boxer” (Paul Simon) and “Copperline” (James Taylor) are done by Brendan and are definitely worth a listen. Buffett’s “Barefoot Children in the Rain” is the only recording other than Buffett’s that I know of.

I would recommend this cd to all of Peter’s friends and anyone else wanting to listen to new tunes and refreshing covers of songs we know.
Peter Mayer and son Brendan have given us a wonderful cd which we all can listen to and appreciate.
