As part of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums' centennial celebration, Terra State Community College will rename a building in honor of the former president -
the Rutherford B. Hayes Skilled Trades Center. The ceremony will occur on Terra State's campus at Noon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.
The building houses the HVAC-R, automotive and welding programs, as well as computer labs and classrooms.
"The naming of a building was suggested, and the trustees, along with (executive director) Christie Weininger from the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, were very excited to do this," Terra State president Dr. Jerome Webster said.
Upon further investigation, the Skilled Trades Center became the clear choice. Hayes wrote in his diary, dated March 11, 1892, that he believed, "To make the boy equal to his fellows, let him be taught to make a living with the skilled labor of his hands." Hayes devoted his post-presidential years to educational issues, Webster said.
The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums - the first presidential museum in the United States - will be celebrating its 100th anniversary with a variety of events throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
