Two terrific RenegadeSTL-Civitas immigration bus tours of St. Louis last week

Thanks so much to Amanda Clark of RenegadeSTL for the terrific bus tours last week of immigration patterns in St. Louis. We covered extensive ground throughout the city and learned a great deal about initial settlement of immigrants in various neighborhoods and subsequent migration. The city's population is beginning to bounce back and that is in no small measure due to the assets which St. Louis provides to immigrants including an in-place infrastructure and a strong brick housing stock.

Among the observations from students on the tour were:
  • Seeing parts of St. Louis that I never would have seen on my own.
  • Getting to see the different cultures I normally don't get to experience.
  • Seeing first-hand the city and its significant areas while learning its background, history and immigration patterns.
  • Walking around the different neighborhoods.
  • So many highlights! Hard to pin one down, but will reread my 9 pages of notes and decide.
  • I liked learning about Old North St. Louis. I didn't know much about it before.

We also have a quick 2 minute video from Saturday. Thanks to all of the students who stayed after to be interviewed!
Here are some student thoughts on what they learned from the immigration tour.

Fake News & Media Literacy -- Workshop at Civitas
Saturday, April 29

There used to be some things that were called news and other things that weren't true. Now we have an industry called fake news. But whose news is fake and whose is real?

On Saturday, April 29, our guest presenter will be Julie Smith, author of Master the Media: How Teaching Media Literacy Can Save Our Plugged-in World. Julie teaches at both Webster University and Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville.

Was it better when we were believing of all news, or now when many are skeptical of all news? How do we tell what is more likely to be real? How good are our B.S. detectors?

Join Julie for an interactive Saturday morning of media and talk at Civitas ( map) from 9:00 - 11:00 AM. You can learn more about Julie on her web site.

Spring Pulitzer Global Gateway focuses
on Syrian Refugees

Civitas and the
Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting are glad to announce the spring Global Gateway outreach program to students and teachers in St. Louis. Robin Shulman
, a freelance journalist based in New York City, has done remarkable recent reporting on Syrian refugees in America's heartland as well as in Canada. There has been enormous interest from Civitas students and teachers this year in immigration issues, both global and local. Robin will be able to share valuable information from her experiences and reporting.

Below is the current schedule for class visits. We have one or two slots remaining; if you are interested, e-mail [email protected].
