Voices for Children of Broward County is thrilled to announce the creation of The Voices for Children of Broward County Endowment Fund, made possible by a $100,000 gift from the Paul Palank Memorial Foundation.   According to Voices for Children's Board Chair, Amy Goldin, "The donation allows us to establish this Fund to ensure Voices will be able to continue to serve the needs of abused, neglected and neglected children served by the Guardian Ad Litem program into the future. We are so grateful for this tremendous gift."

The Paul Palank Memorial Foundation called upon others in the community to contribute to the Endowment Fund. "The Palank Foundation is impressed with the role that Voices has stepped in to fill, becoming the only ongoing funding source for the very important Guardian Ad Litem program for Broward's dependent children," said Angelica Palank, Founding Director of the Palank Foundation. "The Endowment Fund will become one of many funding sources for the organization, which will continue to rely on individual and corporate gifts.  We are hoping that more foundations, businesses and individuals will contribute to this perpetual funding source to help with this problem which, while it may never go away, this organization helps to improve.  This type of gift truly 'keeps giving' to our community's children and thereby our shared future."

The endowment fund will be managed through The Miami Foundation. For more information on how to donate to the Endowment Fund, please call 954-915-6949 or visit our website, www.voicesbroward.org

The Paul Palank Memorial Foundation was formed to aid abused, neglected and abandoned children in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. The Foundation funds organizations that offer immediate assistance to children in crisis while seeking long term solutions to the abuse, neglect and abandonment problem facing the children of our community. www.palankfoundation.org

VOLUNTEER CORNER
Why I like Being a GAL

by Sandra Behrens

Even before I retired from teaching, I knew that I wanted to become a volunteer Guardian Ad Litem. Making a difference in the lives of children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected makes retirement meaningful in a way that golf or Carnival cruises never could. The needs of these children are great, and it's easy for them to "fall through the cracks." Trying to keep that from happening keeps me busy, but seeing positive changes come about makes it all worthwhile.

One morning I got a call from the foster mother on one of my cases. The 2-year-old was having an asthma attack, and the Nebulizer he needed had inadvertently been left at his previous foster home. I drove to the previous foster home, picked up the Nebulizer, and returned to the new foster home, where the necessary treatment relieved the boy's labored breathing. It's a wonderful feeling to know that I made a difference that day. As a GAL, whether I'm advocating at school, at a doctor's office, or in court, I know that my extra pair of caring eyes are helping to make life better for "my kids."
YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GET TOGETHER FOR CHILDREN

On January 22, 2014, our Young Professionals, Rising Voices, teamed up with HANDY to host a fun and exciting New Year's happy hour at Vibe Las Olas. The event was a unique opportunity for our community to mingle and get to learn more about these two great organizations that support abused, neglected, abandoned, and disadvantaged youth. We raised over $1,000.00! You can check out some pictures from the event by clicking here

VERY SUCCESSFUL TOY DRIVE THANKS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES

The holidays usually are very special time for children, but, for children removed from their homes, the holidays can be very difficult, lonely and sad. Thanks to the generosity of American Express Plantation, Transatlantic Plantation Executive Suites, Quest Workspaces Brickell, and Quest Workspaces Ft. Lauderdale, over 200 toys were collected to benefit the children assigned to the Guardian ad Litem program. These toys brought so much happiness and hope to the children. Thank you to all of the wonderful participants!

If your office would like to host an event to benefit the children, please contact us at [email protected]
