Thank a Teacher

May 5th-9th is teacher appreciation Week! The job of a special education teacher is not an easy one, and additional pressures from budget cuts, new school initiatives, and professional development can be overwhelming. One great teacher can make all the difference. Teachers may not always see the impact of their work on kids and families, this week take time to thank a teacher.

Educational Seminar

Thursday, May 15, 2014, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The Youth Transitions Collaborative, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), will host an educational seminar.

This educational seminar will provide an opportunity for the OSERS Rehabilitation Services Administration to share information about the State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Agency's role in the transition process, VR transition practices, and related Federal transition requirements. The event is designed to inform youth with disabilities, their family members, practitioners, VR counselors, public and private sector agencies, educators and other stakeholders in the transition community about the importance of collaboration to ensure a smooth transition process for students with disabilities as they exit school and prepare for post- school activities. You can participate virtually and webinar details are forthcoming.

Family Caregiver Survey

Many family caregivers of children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) look to their places of worship to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment. This survey measures the perceptions of family caregivers and their clergy in three areas: participation and supportiveness; attitudes and beliefs; and congregational support services. To take this survey, participants should be part of the Christian faith tradition, be a primary family caregiver, and reside in the state of Kansas.

Frequently Asked Question

"What is Extended School Year (ESY)?"

Extended School Year (ESY) is a way to keep progress going for children who would regress without school over a long summer break. The general standard applied when determining a student's need for ESY is whether that student will regress significantly without services, or will require a longer than usual time to recoup lost skills when school starts again in the fall. Other possible reasons for providing ESY services may be a lack of progress toward goals, services missed during the year or severe disability.
