Possibly the most colorful day of 2017 was when our Schermerhorn students took a trip to Hawaii.

Not literally of course, but figuratively as they joined together with their teachers to celebrate and learn about Hawaiian food and culture.

Creativity is a core value that we encourage students to explore throughout the year.

A great way to do this is through art projects that allow our students to express themselves with bold and bright colors that engage the senses and inspire the imagination.

Our youngest students are always on the move, so it is no surprise that they are fascinated by big things to go!

From fire trucks to cherry pickers, our annual Transportation Day provided students with a firsthand opportunity to step into these vehicles and learn about the people who drive them.

From Goalball and Wrestling to Cheerleading, Bowling, and Swimming , it is hard to say which sport our students enjoy the most.

This may be because our athletes are driven by their love of sports or that winning (though important for many reasons) is secondary to sportsmanship. Whatever the reason, we are proud of our athletes, and thrilled to honor them at our annual Sports Awards ceremony held in the spring of each year.

Our Residential students come from both our Schermerhorn and Van Cleve programs and take part in a wide range of after-school activities.

A vital component of their educational experience outside the classroom, activities include dance and fitness classes; chess, checkers, and writer clubs, and trips off campus, during which students have a chance to explore their interests and, in doing so, learn more about themselves.

As part of our Technology Program, students visited a nearby Apple store during Computer Science Education Week to take a coding class.

Led by members of Apple's Genius bar, students delighted in participating in coding activities via at www.code.org , including games that increase in difficulty with each successfully written line of code.

Each year, our pre-school artists showcase their artwork for friends and family during an art show held here on campus.

A culmination of their lessons on master artists, our 2017 show featured works inspired by Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, and Diego Rivera.

Each year our students come together to perform winter and spring concerts for their friends and family members.

Featuring dance, choral, and solo vocal performances, these memorable concerts provide everyone with a chance to be in the spotlight and share what they have learned.

The Antoine de Saint Exupéry Youth Foundation recently visited our campus and led two workshops as part of an initiative to improve access to art and literature for blind youth in the United States.

Blind French artist-publisher Claude Garrandes and British 3D designer Eva Sbaraini led these workshops and taught students how to read embossed drawings and use tactile graphics specific on the theme of The Little Prince .

As scientists in training, our students spent much of the year testing hypothesis, collecting date, and analyzing results.

Taking students out of the classroom and to locations throughout the Bronx, one of our most memorable field trips was to the Yonkers Pier Science Barge where students learned about the role of renewable energy in supporting sustainable food production in New York.

This past summer marked the expansion of Camp Wanaqua from four to six weeks!

Heralded by campers and parents alike as a great way to spend the summer, Camp Wanaqua is provided free-of-charge for blind and visually impaired children from throughout New York City and Westchester County.

Did you know NYISE has a greenhouse and a garden!

Used primarily by our middle and high school science classes to study plant life cycles, we encourage all of our students to use the greenhouse and garden to learn more about where their food comes and what it takes to have a green thumb.

Part of our ongoing efforts to teach students about making healthy life choices, we look forward to sharing more about our gardeners throughout 2018.
