31st Annual Golf Classic - Our Members Make It Happen!
|
|
This coming Tuesday, the Chamber will host the 31st Annual Golf Classic. It's not only the Chamber's biggest fundraiser, but the Golf Classic is also a long-time tradition that brings together golfers, volunteers, staff, and Chamber members and their employees each spring for a day of food, drink, and friendly competition.
The golf outing committee begins meeting early in the year to ensure that this event runs smoothly and never gets stale. John Cucarese, from
New York Life
, is event chair for the sixth consecutive year and is joined on the committee by Jenn Cesta from The Public Library of Steubenville & Jefferson County, Jim Morgan, past Chamber Chairman, Brad Degenkolb from the Holiday Inn of Weirton, Chris Orris from Valley Hospice, and Tricia Maple, Chamber president. This year, the committee pulled out all the stops to revamp the door prizes that are given during dinner. No more hats, shirts, and umbrellas (not that there's anything wrong with that). This year member sponsors upped their game and provided everything from baskets of craft beer and liquor to laptops, a GoPro, an Ipad mini, golf and dinner packages, Pirates tickets and more.
Many long-time supporters of the event are once again on board this year, including Trinity Health System who serves as the title sponsor. In advance of Tuesday, the Chamber would like to thank each of our sponsors for helping us keep this tradition alive. Want to include your business' gift card on the "Plant Your Money Locally" gift tree? There's still time. And there are two spaces left for golf teams. Call the chamber offices at 740.282.6226 for details or to register.

House Passes Budget;
Now Onto Senate
The House Finance Committee accepted Substitute House Bill 49 on April 25 as part of the budget bill’s movement through the Ohio House of Representatives. Testimony is being accepted this week with omnibus amendments due on April 28. If things go as planned, the Finance Committee will finish its work, and the full House will pass the budget by the end of next week.
Conditions have changed since HB 49 was considered in the House. Gov. Kasich, House Speaker Rosenberger and Senate President Obhof held a press conference several weeks ago to bring attention to the fact that state revenues were coming in below estimates. They announced that a projected shortfall of $400 million for each fiscal year was to be considered immediately.
The House acted on the news by enacting a 1.5 percent reduction in across the board budget cuts.The adjustments reduced spending by $1 billion in fiscal 2018 and $1.5 billion in fiscal 2019. Even with these reductions, they were able to increase funding by $170 million for opioid issues and $80 million for K-12 education spending.

Senate Will Make Federal Regulations Smarter and More Effective
Reliable, predictable, and stable supply chains are essential to U.S. global competitiveness and continued economic growth. However, a single break or inefficiency in the chain can lead to increased costs and delays for companies and lower quality goods for consumers. Recognizing the importance of global supply chains to conducting business, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will host its Fifth Annual Global Supply Chain Summit: Building Tomorrow’s Networks Today on May 17. The summit is dedicated to advancing some of the most pressing issues of today and new ones on the horizon.
A major topic of discussion will be the recent ratification of the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA). The TFA is specifically designed to reduce red tape, eliminate outdated regulation, and modernize border processes around the globe. The goal is to create greater efficiency in cross-border trade, which will go a long way in improving access to international trade for small- and medium-size businesses. The agreement is expected to reduce the costs of trading goods worldwide by approximately 15%.
A more efficient border today creates opportunities for U.S. exports tomorrow.To read the article in its entirety, click here.

The Gilded Age gives way to the Panic of 1893. Although there had been telltale signs of an impending crash early on in 1893, the chaotic trading at the NY Stock Exchange on May 5 signaled there was no turning back. Three trading houses failed that day, and there were unprecedented slumps in securities. In fact, cheers broke out when the exchange closed for business at 3 p.m. The Panic of 1893 saw over 500 financial institutions shut down and unemployment skyrocket to 10 percent, and its impact would be felt well into 1898.
