Three really good model UN Sessions last Saturday
In reality, international diplomacy has reached a stalemate in the world. In St. Louis, at least for a few hours, the world compromised and problem-solved with great success at the Model United Nations this past Saturday. Over 250 high school students representing over 25 schools, some from as far away as Waynesville, MO, attended one of three sessions at The Drury Inn in Creve Coeur on November 18 to discuss global issues.
Representing countries they chose over a month ago, delegates did an outstanding job role-playing, in many instances, far removed from their true ideology. Each session, for example, included at least one representative from North Korea and one resolution about current sanctions and/or nuclear threats related to North Korea. Representatives of that country did an amazing job defending a nation with few friends in the world. And other countries condemned North Korea accordingly. Russian delegates kept busy as well, reiterating to all their country's great strength in economy, sustainability, and even extreme happiness of their citizens. The United States was vocal at each session, too, sharing its concern that too much of the UN budget falls on them and that climate change issues are very concerning, despite what their president may say.
There was a lot of laughter, as well as learning, that took place at each dynamic session and students departed with energy and enthusiasm. And despite a long day for the Civitas staff, they departed in high spirits knowing the future of the world will be in very good hands.
