News That Connects the Junction Merchants

The discussion at the Annual Merchants Meeting was just an overview of the challenges our organization is tackling with a double-header of increased taxes (from $82,000 in 2017 to $158,000 2018), to the ongoing quest from developers to build on the Junction parking lots we rent.

The Board of Directors has been rolling up their sleeves to determine sustainable solutions that will continue to support economic vibrancy for our small business owners. The body of work has included meeting with the Assessor's Office, to reworking the organizational budget, all-the-while understanding margins are razor thin for business owners who can't be expected to pay more in assessments.

The West Seattle Blog has been tracking this unfolding of events, which was captured in a story Tracy Record published last week.

There isn't a solution yet, but we're working through a number of models. I want to invite and encourage you to join the growing ad hoc Parking Committee. This is a steering committee who tackles questions and develops ideas focused on the continued growth of our business district. Email Lora to join with YES TO PARKING COMMITTEE, we meet as needed as questions arise.

Theft from Falafel Salam Truck

Shimi at Falafel Salam reported equipment stolen from their truck last week. Included was a S quare stand with an iPad and the printer.

With the help of "Where is my Phone" app he beeped and tracked the iPad to a room full of people in the basement of the Safeway parking lot.

Having the police meet him onsite was frustrating as there was not anything the police could do unless he had actually seen the theft. He was able to physically grab the iPad from this person, but that's not the safest way to handle theft.

I've been in contact with Jefferson Square Management and SPD, following up to see what has been done.

QUESTION: If the Junction put together a commercial block watch, would you join the program? Click here to email Lora
with a quick YES TO SAFETY. I'm planning quarterly block watch meetings for Junction merchants that will include SPD at the table so you can ask your pressing safety questions. In addition, we'll be developing proactive safety solutions before summer starts.

West Seattle Art Walk

Art Walk will be kicking into high gear as evenings get warmer and days longer.

NEW! We now have a dedicated Art Walk Coordinator and Outreach Manager (both volunteers!) who will be working with you to place artists in your business. If you're short on time (always!) or can't find an artist, we have a comprehensive list the Outreach Manager can share.

Art doesn't always need to be on canvas. We can help you book musicians that will draw crowds and create a fun Second Thursday event.
