Before we welcome 2016, we'd like to share with you the best of 2015...

The 12 Joys of ALearn

Our annual Dream Makers Dinner is a joyous occasion. This year, we honored Dan  & Charmaine Warmenhoven for their lifelong support of the underserved. Charmaine's words buoyed us all:  "ALearn's mission resonates with our vision  of a just society."

ALearn students performed "Mathtown Funk" at the Dream Makers Dinner. A takeoff on the wildly popular song, "Uptown Funk," their lyrics celebrated their new-found math prowess. Check out their fun video.

65 Credentialed Teachers   are bringing what they learned at ALearn this year back into th eir classrooms, magnifying the effect of our unique approach and Common Core expertise. As our Teacher of the Year, Jonathan Natividad, says: " I look at ALearn as a lab for me...I've taken numerous ALearn practices--like Growth Mindset--and brought them into my own classroom during the school year."

The " ALearn Cardboard Challenge " t asked student teams with designing and building houses to strict specifications . Team members presented all of their calculations, blueprints, and scale models. Students  not only practiced math and communication, they learned about perseverance.

Our Girls Exploring Math (GEM) program is in its second year, and students are thriving. Not only do they learn math, they get a chance to code at the Computer History Museum. They are also inspired by women in STEM  who come to  our classrooms, like Google roboticist, Bianca Soto, who helped students virtually control a remote robot.

ALearn is transforming lives of students and families.  Watch this ALearn parent talk about the difference ALearn has made for his son:

Student achievement is strong 2015 middle school students  boosted their scores by 30% , and  80% of our incoming 9th graders passed Algebra , putting them  year ahead  in math.

College Inspiration Nights  and our End-of-Program Celebrations engage parents in learning about what their student must do to be college-ready.

ALearn's "College Board" projects inspire students to learn about college. This year's standout was Xazil Carrillo, who not only designed a fabulous board, but also created a video that shows where she wants to study Graphic Design. BONUS joyful moment: When Xazil presented her college board at our fundraiser, a donor offered her a summer internship!

Our students feel empowered. Year after year, over 90% of our students report feeling more motivated to go to college because of ALearn.

Students are going to college. ALearn's first three classes of students to finish high school graduated eligible to enroll in a UC or CSU at
2.2 times the rate of their peers.

And the #1 Joy of ALearn is:
We served  1,525 students this year, bringing our total since 2008 to
almost 8,000. Most will be the first in their families t o go to college.

Thank you for your support and for sharing our joy. We wish you a happy new year and a wonderful 2016!
