Greetings!
ST. JOHN'S 2018 FACILITY CAMPAIGN has started!

St. John's 2018 Facility Campaign

Address Today's Needs...
Assure Tomorrow's Dreams

Those of us on the Vestry know you already care about St. John's. You need no convincing to do what is right for the future of our church.

So why do we ask for donations above and beyond what you already give? The Church has needs that cannot be met with the established budget but which are necessary if we are to continue to make this a vibrant place for the worship of God.

Questions & Answers about St. John's 2018 Facility Campaign

Q: Why does St. John's need your donations?
A: To provide much needed repairs, maintenance, and preservation of our beautiful historic facility and grounds.

Q: Why are these things not already addressed in the current budget?
A: St John's current budget is based upon anticipated revenue and expenses.
The Vestry is very careful not to live beyond our means and tries to maintain a budget that carefully balances income and expenditures. As a result, much needed facility repairs could not be funded.

Q: Were outside sources sought to provide funding?
A: Yes, the Vestry applied for a challenge grant from The Bishop Peter J. Lee Endowment for Small Church Revitalization and was approved for a challenge grant of $5,000. This was the largest the diocese could approve as it balances the needs of many churches in the diocese.

Q: How much will all of these projects cost?
A: About $47,000 for everything. The Vestry has already identified special contributions that can match the challenge grant so about $10,000 has already been raised. This leaves $37,000 needed to complete these priority projects.

Q: Will the projects be done in a particular order?
A: The Vestry decides a project schedule based upon several factors such as Diocese Grant guidelines, mandated government changes, and sufficiency of funds for a particular project.

Q: What projects are included in this Facility Campaign?
A: The Vestry has prioritized the most urgent projects. They are:

  1. Replace a 10 Ton HVAC unit used for cooling/heating the nursery, breeze way and rooms 206, 207, and 208. It is 25 years old and repair parts and Freon are becoming increasing difficult to find. This is the first of four HVAC systems that will need replacing in the next 2-5 years.
  2. Replace the Roof on the Historic Church. All of the shingles need replacing and there may be damage to the wooden underlayment. This would be Phase 1 of a three phased effort to replace both the peak and flat roofs areas of the church. See the diagram on our web site and in the church breeze way.
  3. Replace the church's 92-gallon commercial water heater. This unit is over 25 years old and has exceeded its projected life span. A new one is needed to supply hot water to the 17 water faucets, commercial dishwasher, and shower unit that are located throughout our 16,000+ square foot facility.

4. Other miscellaneous repairs and fixes.

Q: Can I contribute to just one of the projects?
A: For maximum flexibility in meeting urgent needs, it is preferred that your Facility Campaign donations be unrestricted.

Q: Can I contribute in any other way besides money?
A:  Yes, if you know of sources that could help with either funding, materials, or labor for a project or if you wish to be a leader to manage and implement one of the listed projects just let a Vestry member know. Also, do remember this campaign in your prayers.

Q: What are the different options to make donations for this campaign?
A. Included here are some new ways to give:
  1. You can contribute online by clicking on the "Give" button below.
  2. You can use the Tithe.ly Finance (Green) mobile app on your Apple or Android Smart Phone
  3. You can indicate on your paper check or credit card authorization the amount is for the 2018 Facility Campaign. This can be contributed during the offertory on Sunday or mailed to: St. John's 5649 Mount Gilead Road Centreville Virginia 20120

Q: What amount should I give?
A: This is a question best answered after thoughtful, prayerful consideration. Any amount received will be gratefully accepted.

Q: Can I contribute more than once?
A: Yes, your multiple donations will be accepted anytime during the campaign.

Q: How long will the campaign last?
A: The campaign will run through Labor Day.

Q: Will I be informed of the progress?
A: Yes, periodic progress reports will be provided in E-Notes, on poster boards, and following Sunday services.

When you contribute to this campaign you are making a statement:

It is substance of caring for St John's facility needs today.

It is the evidence of dreams for tomorrow's Kingdom of God.

PARISH NEWS
  • Interested in a Book Study on Israel?
As many parishioners from St. John's will be traveling to the Holy Land in January, we would like to start a book study this summer to learn more about Israel and the places we will be visiting before we go. Those not going on the trip are certainly welcome to join this book study. Val Tucker has purchased some of the books from the recommended reading list and has graciously offered to lend them out. These books are in a container in the library. If you would like to borrow one, please sign it out so she will know who has what book. People are encouraged to read different books, and we can share what we have learned when we get together. Hopefully, we can get together at least a few times over the summer. Let's meet for the first time on Thursday, June 28 at 7:00 PM in the library. If you want to join us but can't come on this date, please let Carol know. We will set future meeting dates at this first meeting.

  • Attention Graduates
If you or someone in your family is graduating from high school, college, or graduate school in the next few months, please let Carol know so we can share your good news with the parish family in the ENotes. If you know what you will be doing in the fall, send that information as well.

  • Mission Trip
Lindsay Jones, daughter of Sandy and Dan Jones, will be going on a mission trip to Haiti from July 12-19 with youth from Epiphany Episcopal Church in Oak Hill. Lindsay and others going on this mission trip will be with us this Sunday and will tell us about the importance of this trip, their need for some financial support, and the work they hope to accomplish. They will also be selling raffle tickets and will be providing the coffee hour snacks. Lindsay was baptized and confirmed at St. John's. Everyone who is under 19 when they are confirmed receives a $200 voucher from the Diocese of Virginia to go on a mission trip. Come Sunday and hear about their plans. Let's support Lindsay and the other youth going on this mission trip to Haiti!

  • Junior Olympics
Gray Jones, daughter of Sandy and Dan Jones, has qualified to compete in the Junior Olympics in beach volleyball in California this summer. Beach volleyball has teams of two people and they play on sand, though not necessarily at the beach! Gray had formerly played "regular" volleyball, but really enjoys beach volleyball. (Yes, the Jones family will be having a busy summer!!!)

  • Many, Many Thanks......
Now that summer is almost upon us, our regular choir will be taking an official break until Labor Day. Many will be taking vacations and other trips out of town. However, those who are in town on a given Sunday will continue to sing in the choir loft. But I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the choir for the beautiful music they provide for our services week after week. They come early on Sunday for rehearsal and stay after our service for more rehearsal. This is a wonderful and dedicated group who share their gifts of music with all of us, and to the glory of God. Members of our choir include Penny and David Parker, Susie and Larry Pike, Bob Barnes, Helen Rusnak, Marcia Evans, Jo Chandler and Alison Gosney. Many thanks also go to our Minister of Music, Mandy Hull, who leads our choir and plays so beautifully for us every week. Thanks to all!!!

SUNDAY SERVICE

We can prepare our hearts & minds by reading ahead
for the Sunday Service lessons.

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 10, 2018
9:30 AM

 The First Reading: 1Samuel 8:4-20, 11:14-15
To whom do you listen to hear the word of the Lord? The people of Israel listen to themselves and to each other, and are gravely misled.

The Psalm: 138

The Epistle: 2 Corinthians 4:13 - 5:1
This world and experience are small compared to the eternity we are promised by God. Any suffering or struggle now is but a pinprick in the time and the experience of the glory of God.

The Gospel: Mark 3:20-35
Jesus faces opposition for his preaching and his work. He is accused by the crowds of being an agent of evil, and the conflict leads those who care for him to try to quiet him and keep him from harm.

Go
One little word, "go", sums up who were are. We are a ‘sent’ people. We are an apostolic people. We are an apostolic church, because we are sent out with a mission: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!
-Br. James Koester

"Love your neighbor. That's why we're here," Presiding Bishop Michael Curry told a rapt audience at the National City Christian church in Washington before the procession to the White House last Thursday. He continued, his voice building, as audience members rose to their feet cheering wildly: "Love the neighbor you like and love the neighbor you don't like. Love the neighbor you agree with and the neighbor you don't agree with. Love your Democrat neighbor, your Republican neighbor. Your black neighbor and your white neighbor, your Anglo neighbor, your Latino, your LGBTQ neighbor. Love your neighbor. That's why we're here."
Quote from Bishop Curry before silent procession to White House
