In California, "Financing large projects that include biodiesel processors [are]...attracting a new type of predator with clever tricks to fraudulently divert investment revenue streams to him," writes Digest contributor Peter Brown in a new article appearing in Biodiesel magazine. The article looks in depth at frauds and scams in biodiesel financing, including a recent case of escrow money swiped by an attorney.

In Washington, the Energy Information Administration said that US ethanol production averaged 38.64 million gallons per day, up 672,000 gallons per day, and that the four-week average ethanol production rose to 38.282 million gallons per day.

In Missouri, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car brands will increase conversion of its airport shuttle buses to 20 percent biodiesel (B20) and are exploring other clean fuel options for its buses. The company has converted its fleet of buses to biodiesel in more than 50 North American markets. Overall, more than 70 percent of its buses now run on biodiesel,

In the UK, Royal Navy Rear Adm. Neil A. Morisetti, the UK's climate and energy security adviser, visited the Air Force Research Laboratory Propulsion Directorate at Wright-Patterson with former US Air Combat Command chief Gen. Ronald E. Keys. Morisetti called on the US and UK to collaborate more closely on the development of strategic high-performance biofuels.

In Brazil,  CleanStar Ventures and Novozymes will be hosting a side event at the upcoming Rio+20 Summit. The two companies established an innovative food and energy business in Mozambique that delivers urban households an affordable ethanol-based cooking alternative to charcoal.

In India, the Center for Jatropha Promotion & Biodiesel has lately thrown its weight behind R&D on castor beans, saying that the castor, as a companion crop, can double returns and yields for farmers, with castor bean acting as a cover crop, as well as producing a high-value renewable oil.

In the UK, Suzanne Lee has developed a "vegetable leather" fabric made using bacteria, green tea, sugar and yeast.  The material can be cut, dried, molded and sewn.  The product has a life expectancy of five years, at which point it will rot and harden, but not to worry, as it can be composted with a standard home garden composting system.

In the UK, ActionAid is urging UK leaders to downsize the EU biofuels targets, issuing a report that projected that implementing the 10% EU biofuels target would cause global corn prices to rise by 22 percent, sugar by 21 percent, and vegetable oil prices up by 36 percent. The group is urging G20 action at the group's upcoming meeting in Mexico.
Policy News

In Washington, the Agriculture Energy Coalition (AgEC) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) urging them to defend reauthorization and significant mandatory funding for Farm Bill Energy Title programs as passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee.

In Washington state, Jud Virden, a 20-year laboratory veteran with experience creating energy research partnerships with U.S. industry, has been named associate laboratory director for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Energy and Environment Directorate.
Financial News

The Biofuels Digest Index™ (BDI), a basket of public biofuels stocks, jumped 1.17 percent to 63.32 on a general renewables advance.  For the day, Amyris (AMRS) recovered 4.00 percent to $2.60, while Gevo advanced 4.17 percent to $5.99.  Among other equities, KiOR (KIOR) climbed 3.24 percent to $7.01.  Overall, advances led declines 7 to 1 for the day.
