God's grace has been clearly demonstrated by the outpouring of support through those across the USA that have donated books for the ACU Library. It is estimated that we are nearing 75% of the 10,000 books that were requested to initiate a library. Thank God for each one of you who have given of such precious resources for this purpose

- DONATIONS -
Our supplication to God now turns
to His supply for shipping the library to Zambia by October for classes beginning in January 2014. We pray that His provision would enable you to assist us through a designated donation. We have a quote from Theological Book Network (Grand Rapids, Michigan) to oversee the process of getting the books from Kansas City, Missouri to Lusaka, Zambia. Would you help us in raising $12,000 for this purpose?

by Conrad Mbewe (ACU Chancellor and Pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church, Lusaka, Zambia)

Conrad Mbewe

When John Chundu walked into my living room and shared with me his burning desire to start a Christian university, I did not have the foggiest idea what the Lord was about to do. All I knew was that I needed to pray with John about this so that the will of the Lord might come to fruition. And it did. A few weeks later, I got an email from Ken Turnbull-who at that time I did not even know existed on the planet-asking if we could talk about starting a Christian university here in Zambia. I quickly told John the Lord had answered our prayers.

One thing led to another so quickly that before I could count up to ten (or so it felt) the African Christian University was born on Zambian soil. What a joy it has been to see the team that God has put together in Zambia and elsewhere to get this mammoth project off the ground!

Ken Turnbull and John Chundu

For me, ACU is a dream come true. I always wanted Kabwata Baptist Church to use the channel of education as a means to have a captive audience to saturate with gospel truths. By this I mean to have them impacted with the whole of special revelation with Christ at its centre. So, when the opportunity came for us as a church to start a Christian primary school, we went for it. We were battling with how to proceed to develop a Christian secondary school when ACU came knocking on the door. The Lord had been preparing us for this project long ago.

It has been great to see the Reformed Baptist churches in Lusaka, and indeed across the country, galvanising around this initiative so that it has truly become an inter-church project. Our team currently labouring to realise this dream is drawn from a cross-section of our churches.

Perhaps the biggest surprise the Lord has given me since John walked into my living room has been the call for me to serve as the first chancellor of the university. I know the Lord is full of surprises, and I expect them any time, but this one was never on the radar. I have always been content to be a catalyst. I love to precipitate events without appearing prominently on the front cover. It fills me with joy to inspire others to do what I think God wants them to do in the extension of his kingdom while I remain cheering in the crowd.

So, when the idea was first presented to me to serve as Chancellor of ACU, like Jonah, I straightaway took off for Tarshish. Thankfully, in my case, the Lord did not need to use a big fish to teach me a lesson. His servants simply made me come to terms with what God was saying. With a sense of trepidation, I heard a voice say, "Thou art the man!" All my excuses have since melted away and instead there has been a growing sense of gratitude that the Lord has seen fit to use me in this particular way. I have said to him, "Here I am, Lord. Send me."

As I look at fulfilling my new role as head of the university, I see myself first and foremost as playing a pastoral role. I seek to ensure that the whole ACU project is bathed in the prayers of God's people from right across the globe. We will need God's help in this mammoth project. This pastoral role will also involve listening to the challenges being faced by management, faculty and students, and seeking to encourage them to remain true to God in the midst of those challenges. I look to God to fill my heart with love for those who will be part of the ACU family.

I also see myself as playing the role of "ambassador-at-large" for ACU. I will do my best to carry the banner of ACU wherever I go. This will not be easy because my default mode is that of pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church. Yet now I must always wear two hats. Thankfully, my worldwide airfares for the next few years have already been covered. So, the issue is not finances. As the Lord brings us students and we begin to see their lives being moulded, I want to get out there and tell the world, "See what the Lord is doing here and be a part of it!"

I also want to see ACU grow into the best university on the continent-to the glory of God. I want to see ACU disciple young minds, hearts, and hands to fulfil the cultural mandate in a way that no other university in Africa has done. I want to see this happen. This will demand that we ensure the highest possible levels of scholarship and discipleship. With a Christ-centered view of all the academic disciplines, those who are Christians and are moulded by our faculty should go out there and change the way things are done in Africa.

Finally, I look forward to playing my first public role of conferring degrees on our first graduates. I trust they will be individuals who have Christ in their hearts by his Spirit and whose engines are revving to fulfil their God-given calling in life. What a joy that will be! May that day come soon. Amen!

ReformedThe 2013 Reformed Family Conference

by Pastor Dan Chittock (Bethesda Baptist Church, Allen Park, Michigan)

2013 Reformed Family Conference

As the 2013 Reformed Family Conference convened over the last week of August the Lord's good hand of blessing was, undeniably, evident. This year's conference (the 24th annual!) was held at the new facilities of Lusaka Baptist Church which proved to be a wonderful venue. The Reformed Baptist Churches of Lusaka, Zambia were, again, gracious and humble as hosts. Attendance records were broken with over twelve-hundred registrants and attendance estimates in the fifteen-hundreds for the evening sessions. The broad fellowship of the saints was as sweet as ever consisting of the usual suspects from Zambia and her surrounding neighbors (Kenya, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, et al) with some Australians, Englishmen, Americans, Canadians, and others sprinkled in. What a joy to see and hear such a wide swath of humanity come together by virtue of their union in Jesus Christ. It was "a foretaste of glory divine".

The theme of this year's conference was "The Christian Life: Fighting Temptation and Finding Assurance". Don Carson and Thabiti Anyabwile were the main speakers. Ronald Kalifungwa gave the keynote message on Monday evening and set the tone for the remainder of the week. Carson focused on the matter of temptation; Anyabwile spoke to the issue of assurance. Consciences were pricked, affections stirred, and hearts warmed as God spoke through the faithful preaching of His Word. Would to God that He continue to use this annual gathering for the betterment of His people and the advancement of His Kingdom.

SolaThe 2013 Sola 5 Conference

by Ray Warwick (ACU Academic Dean)

East Side Baptist Church in Windhoek, Namibia hosted this year's Sola 5 Conference, Sept 5-8. Pastor Joachim Rieck and the church did an outstanding job of providing a comfortable and well-organized environment. The theme was Tolerance and the Gospel. Pastors Jeff George (Free Grace Baptist Church), Tim Cantrell (Antioch Bible Church) and Isaac Makashinyi (Emmasdale Baptist Church) along with Errol Wagner (George Baptist Church), Chris Woolley (Midrand Chapel) and Joachim Rieck converged with messages that were enlightening, convicting and encouraging, without exception.

2013 Sola 5 Conference

Numerous mission efforts from all over southern Africa were reported on, including ACU. Also, groups from various churches and countries blessed the attendees with local renditions of songs and hymns. The food was delicious, the fellowship was sweet, and the Spirit blessed the hearts and instructed the minds of those who were privileged to attend.

If you have books of all types in any academic disciplines, but particularly those emphasizing a Christian worldview, please consider if you might be in a position to donate towards ACU's library.

Thank God for the unity of fellowship and strengthening of the African church that was the signature of the 2013 Reformed Family and Sola 5 Conferences this year.

The ACU Board meeting on Sep 14 in Lusaka was both challenging and rewarding. The urgent need to "strengthen our hands for the good work" was clear. The Zambian church must rise up with concerted effort to bring the vision to fruition. Pray for hearts united toward this purpose, strengthened with conviction of the need for whole-life transformation for Africans who seek an education that will equip them to serve Christ's kingdom with all of their heart, mind and strength.

By God's grace one of the key challenges facing ACU for registration as a university in Zambia was met through doors opened to Dr. Turnbull while he was in the USA. ACU will be pursuing memorandums of understanding with Covenant College (Lookout Mountain, Georgia) and Toronto Baptist Seminary (Toronto, Ontario) as backstop universities for ACU. Praise the mighty hand of God for these relationships!

The effort nearing the goal of 10,000 books to initiate ACU's library was granted great success as God drew together His people to give precious donations, large and small, to approach the goal within a few short months. What a mighty God we serve!

The Turnbulls thank God for bringing them back home to Lusaka after a productive time for ACU developments in the USA. May God grant grace in moving the ACU project forward, especially for the initiation of the Scholars Program in January 2014.

ACU praying hands

Pray earnestly with fasting that God would move His children to give towards the ACU library shipment. May we see the needed $12,000 gathered from around the globe in time for the library to be received in Zambia by January 2014.

May God continue to give wisdom as the initial pioneers of the Student Labor Program make plans to innovate a new approach to whole-life discipleship through Christ-centered business. Pray for these initial "tent making" missionaries who are making plans to move their families and lives to Zambia to assist the church through ACU. Pray this month particularly for Antonio and Sinara Oliveira and their two children, and for Jonathan and Johanna Noble and their two young children.

Join in praying for the Quarterly Business Meeting at Lusaka Baptist Church on Sept 28 when the issue regarding land for the ACU campus will be discussed. May God's grace prevail over the church as the needs for the ACU ministry are afforded.

There is great need for many Zambian laborers to volunteer their services in many roles so that the foundational policies, plans, infrastructure and materials can be in place for the initiation of the Scholars Program. Pray that God would move in the hearts of those who have the time and talents to assist in the work.

Pray that the ACU project would be a growing passionate prayer for all those who will most benefit from the Biblical-based education in all vocations enhancing the penetrating power of the gospel throughout every sphere of African life.
