The American Symphony Orchestra 2011-12 Series Continues
This Weekend

Friday, February 24 at 8 pm

Saturday, February 25 at 8 pm
Preconcert talk by Christopher H. Gibbs, James H. Ottaway Jr. Professor of Music, at 7 pm on both evenings

Tickets: $25, 35, 40

This weekend, the American Symphony Orchestra returns to the stage of the Sosnoff Theater for its second performance of the 2011-12 season. Conducted by music director Leon Botstein, the ASO will perform three major 20th-century orchestral works.

Featuring soloist Jiazhi Wang '13, violin, the program includes Ravel's La valse, pome chorgraphique, a piece inspired by Johann Strauss, the "Waltz King." Ravel spoke of the piece as "a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese Waltz, with which is mingled in my mind the fantastic whirl of destiny." Also on the program is Prokofiev's Violin Concert No. 2. Written while Prokofiev was on tour, the concerto reflects Prokofiev's idea of "new simplicity," in which melodies must be "simple and comprehensible, without being repetitive or trivial."

The concert concludes with The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, the piece that put Stravinsky at the forefront of the avant-garde. Written for Sergei Diaghliev's ballet, the work is in two tableaux-"The Adoration of the Earth" and "The Sacrifice"--each of which has an introductory section and a concluding ritual.
