Inventors Club

What do clocks, code breakers, and calculators all have in common?

Join us in the workshop as we investigate mechanical computers this Fall during Inventors Club. We will investigate some of our favorite examples of mechanical computing and try to create our own mechanical computer using marbles as our inputs. After our introductory investigation of mechanical computers, spend the rest of the session making your own project with the help and expertise of our volunteer mentors.

LEGO Robotics

What's the first step to becoming an amazing scientist, inventor, or engineer?

The Bakken's Lego Robotics class!

We have groups for younger students to learn the basics of building and programming a Lego robot as well as more advanced Robolympics classes for older students.  This opportunity to build valuable STEM skills is not one to be missed!

Part 1 - Construction

 1)  Tape squares together to form walls
       (like a book)

2)   Make ghost

  • Put either magnet into center of tissue paper (North or South doesn't matter)
  • Fasten in place by twisting rubber band around to form head
  • Fluff tissue paper at bottom to look ghost like
  • Tape fishing line to ghost's head

3)   Make wand

  • Tape the remaining magnet to one end of the straw
  • Decorate

4)   Make roof

  • Put triangle piece of cardboard onto top of wall
  • Tape into place to hold walls together

5)   Tape ghost's string onto roof so that ghost            swings in front of the "stage"

  • If desired, decorate the stage

Part 2 - Experimentation

1)      Wave wand around ghost and get ghost to move

2)      Try to wave wand over top or behind cardboard

3)      Move wand so magnets repel instead of attract
