Letter from the Director 
March - the word has a variety of meanings - to have common boundaries and to move in a direct purposeful manner - in step with others. Sounds like the work of the NJ Arts Education Partnership. 

March is also Youth Art Month and in this edition of The Beat you can learn how Art Educators of NJ is marking this event and how they are connecting to the Arts Ed Now campaign. 

Arts Ed Now  is hitting the road and "popping up" at Teen Arts Festivals across the state from March-May. County Teen Arts Festivals are starting this month in Burlington, Hudson, Monmouth, Ocean and Union. It's all part of our outreach to spread the word about the value of arts education and recruit ambassadors who want to increase participation locally too! Look for us at your county's festival. We'll be handing out buttons, stickers, campaign toolkits and temporary tattoos so you can show your support. Come tell your story at our impromptu video stations. It's all part of our effort to build a groundswell for public launch of the campaign in September! 

NJAEP continues to march forward in a purposeful way with others - finding common ground with those who are passionate about the arts in the lives of our children.

Learn how arts education can help schools and districts achieve their Title I goals. Organizations such as the California Alliance for Arts Education provide school leaders with resources and proven strategies to harness the potential of arts programming. On April 11th, 2016, the Foundation for Educational Administration will host Achieving Title I Goals: The Role of Arts Education. The three-hour session will feature Karen Campbell, Director, NJDOE, The Office of Supplemental Ed. Programs; Dale Schmid, Ed.D., NJDOE Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator; and Laura Smyth, Ph.D, Lead Consultant, Title I Initiative, California Alliance for Arts Education. Time is Running Out: Complete Your Arts Education Census 
Schools across the state are busy filling out the 2016 Arts Education Census.  The deadline for survey completion is coming up on March 15th. If you are an arts educator check with your principal to see if the school has completed the survey. If not, volunteer to help gather the information.

March is Youth Art Month (YAM), a time, according to the National Art Education Association, "to celebrate visual arts for grades K - 12, emphasize the value of art education for all children, and encourage support for quality school art programs...

Coming Soon - 2016 School Performance Reports for Arts Education

Building upon the work of NJAEP over the past several years, the New Jersey Department of Education will release the 2015 School Performance reports by the end of April. In addition to having information regarding arts education participation in high schools... the same measures will now be available for middle schools.
 
A completely revised interactive dashboard will be released with the addition of the middle school information and will now contain three years of high school arts participation data.

The 2016 State YAM Exhibit will be held from March 4th to March 11th at the Statehouse in Trenton. Over 100 pieces of NJ student artwork will be on display from every county in the state!

What's happening throughout the state...

- "Monmouth county, we have artwork from over 100 students throughout the county displayed at the Middletown Arts Center, March 1-13. We are culminating our celebration with a closing reception on March 13th, during which participating students, teachers, and their families are invited to the Middletown Arts Center for arts activities, light refreshments, and an awards ceremony.

We will have "make and take" art projects, a group painting project, and certificates for all participants."

- " Middlesex County Schools will have their art work on display from March 12th -19th and co chairs Susan Catrone and Kristen Barth are hosting a reception of student artists at Middlesex County College on March 19."
- "Somerset County: Our exhibits are held at The Center for Contemporary Art, We have two exhibits. Exhibit I: Grades K- 5, February 29, 2016 - March 6, 2016 with an Artists Reception on Sunday, March 6, 2016 from 2:00 - 3:30pm. Exhibit II: Grades 6 - 12, March 8, 2016 - March 13, 2016 with an Artist Reception on March 13, 2016 from 2:00 - 3:30pm. Thanks to Elie Porter Trubert, the Executive Director, for having us for the 14th year in a row!"

- "William Davies Middle School -Hamilton Twp, in Atlantic County, hosts a month long exhibit at the Atlantic County Library in Mays Landing. It is sponsored by Hamilton Township Education Association, PRIDE. The reception will be March 8th 7pm-8pm. Exhibit on display March 1st- March 31st."

- " Bergen County - We will be having a reception on March 17th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the One River Art School and Gallery in Englewood. We have over 15 schools participating in YAM."

Teen Arts Festival 

It is an exciting month for the arts in New Jersey. Among the highlights--March marks the first of many county Teen Arts Festivals that will take place before the NJ State Teen Arts Festival in June.  Each of the county Teen Arts Festivals plays host to numerous workshops, performances and exhibits.  The festivals are planned independently, and the result is a remarkable multi-disciplinary showcase in each of the participating counties. This provides students with a memorable occasion to share their work publicly with peers and professionals. The Teen Arts Festivals have a long legacy in New Jersey, with some counties' first festival dating back more than 40 years! 
 
2016 marks the return of the State Teen Arts Festival. After a five-year hiatus, the statewide festival is scheduled to take place June 1st-3rd, at Ocean County College. The State Teen Arts Festival, which receives submissions from all preliminary county festivals, further honors the artistic achievement of students age 13-19.  This year the organizers of the State Festival have challenged students throughout NJ to promote the importance of arts education.  Students are encouraged to compete in a video contest that captures the importance of the arts in a short video.

"This year as part of the NJ State Teen Arts Festival, an NJ Arts Educator will be selected to receive an Arts Educator of the Year award. The award is for an arts educator who has transformed their school or district by their dedication to the teaching of an art form. The Festival is now accepting nominations from school principals and arts supervisors. To nominate an individual please fill out a nominating form and return it to the Arts & Education Center by April 30, 2016. The award carries a cash stipend of $1,500."
