What Are YOU Thankful For?

Thanksgiving Day is this week and we have much to be thankful for in the Brookville School District.  We hope you are able to spend time with family and friends and reflect upon what you are thankful for in your own life.

We took time to have a roving reporter ask students what they were thankful for this Thanksgiving and thought you may enjoy seeing some of those answers.

STAR Days
Teachers Use Professional Development Time to Collaborate
One difficulty in a service oriented business is finding time for those providing the service to learn, share and discover new initiatives and best practices. Teachers do much of their professional development and training throughout the summer. However, while in session, there is still a need for this time with grade level teams, content department teams and other colleagues. Brookville Schools have four early dismissal or STAR Days throughout the year and two staff development days on Columbus Day and President's Day.

Most recently, during the November 12 STAR Day, staff spent time further learning about and developing formative assessment skills, one of this year's three instructional goals. (See the October 19th edition of the Blue Connector  here for more information on formative assessment.) They also spent time  exploring student learning objectives and shared practices in Google and Chromebook technology.

We understand these days can be difficult for families and child care, however, they are essential to our continued efforts to provide the best instruction possible to our students.

BHS Learning Life Skills
On Monday, November 16, Miss Hunley's class loaded into a school vehicle with grocery lists in hand, and headed to purchase items for their upcoming Thanksgiving meal. Upon arriving at the store, students were split into two groups, with a labeled map of where to find their items. Thirty minutes later, the groups met at the front of the store to check out. For the next two school days, the students created detailed plans and step-by-step lists to make their cooking experience easy and their meal delicious.

On Thursday, November 19, the students once again departed from the school, this time with recipes and the food items. Everything was planned out, down to the soap and towels for cleanup. The class headed to the Board Office kitchen where they began prepping and cooking their feast. Each student was in charge of a specific dish and soon the kitchen was filled with smells of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.

The goal for the class is to provide students with opportunities to practice everyday life skills. Miss Hunley's students work on tasks such as: creating grocery lists, shopping, money management, meal planning, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Mastery of these skills allows students to become as independent as possible upon graduating.

The students laughed and talked during their lunch and after their bellies were full (some with seconds and thirds) the class began cleaning up. One suggestion students gave for next year is to have a designated time after their meal to nap. To view more photos of the day's events, please visit the photo gallery here.
Blue Devil Athletics
Football Wraps up and Winter Sports are In Full Swing
Last Friday night in Piqua the football team's historical season and post-season run came to an end with a 31-13 loss to defending state champion Coldwater.  Despite a gallant effort, the Blue Devils came out on the short end of this Regional Final contest.  We are proud of our team and the 2nd place trophy they brought home.

Friday's crowd was indicative of how our community supported the team throughout the season.  It appeared that most of Brookville made the trek up Interstate 75 to watch the boys in blue.  Even in defeat, Brookville played very well and represented our school and athletic program in stellar fashion. We congratulate the team, coaches, cheerleaders, band and support organizations on a fine season.

Turning the Page... The winter athletic season has already started.

The girls' high school basketball team is currently playing and opens their year with four straight away games. Their home opener is Tuesday, December 8 against National Trail.

The boys' high school basketball team has had to adjust their schedule do to the extended football season.  The home opener against Carlisle has been rescheduled for December 21, and the second game at Bellbrook has been rescheduled for January 6.  The boys will now open their basketball schedule December 5, at National Trail with the first home game December 11 against Monroe.

The swimming team is approximately 30 aquanauts strong this year and opens their season December 2 at Trotwood.  The swim team hosts their home meets at Trotwood High School as do several other area teams.  As a result you can see the team compete several times throughout the year at Trotwood High whether it is our home meet or not!

Finally, the wrestling team , under the tutelage of new head coach Tyler Bey will open their season with a home team dual meet tournament on December 5.

Links leading to all of these schedules can be found in the left border of this Blue Connector.

The Holiday Season has Begun
5th and 6th Grade Choir Concerts
Part of the joy of the holiday season is seeing and hearing our children perform at choir and band concerts. They are always sure to provide enjoyable entertainment and put us in the holiday spirit.

This year the 5th and 6th grade choirs kicked off our concert line up.  On November 19th they preformed to a full auditorium. The show was outstanding and we take great pride in providing it to you through the Blue Connector. To see more of their talents, visit our YouTube channel here and click on the other videos from the concerts .

2015 FFA National Convention
Nine members of Brookville-MVCTC FFA Chapter recently attended the 2015 National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The theme of this year's convention encouraged students to use FFA as a tool to help them "Amplify" in their schools, communities, FFA Chapters, and beyond. Students who attended the Convention brought back information and skills that they learned and shared with the chapter.

Brookville-MVCTC FFA Chapter was privileged to experience many things on their trip. The attending members were: Erin Tomlin, Christine Grow, Emma Madlinger, Paige Rockey, Tanner Marburger, Zach Chambers, Alex Monnig, TJ Hunt, and Derek Winner.  Members toured Great American Ballpark, where they learned about turfgrass management. They also visited the museum, diamond club, press boxes, and walked on the field.

They attended several Convention sessions, where they heard from keynote speaker, Dr. Rick Rigsby. Dr. Rigsby presented a moving speech, encouraging members to hold on to the wisdom of their elders and to live a servant life. Members participated in National FFA's National Day of Service, where they assisted with landscaping and outdoor projects at the Brennan House in Louisville, the headquarters of Preservation Louisville. Members attended the Agricultural Career Show, where over 450 agricultural businesses and universities provided students with information about career opportunities. They were even treated to a FFA member concert by Jake Owen and Maddie and Tae.

The experiences gained by attending National FFA Convention are countless. In sharing their experiences with their classmates, students stated they enjoyed keynote speakers at sessions, the opportunity to see the diversity of the agricultural industry, meeting FFA members from across the country, and gaining skills to further their own leadership development. Attending the convention has also prompted many students to set high goals for themselves, from holding an officer position to applying for awards. Students gained valuable skills which they can apply throughout their future.
