BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Adds Three
Boyd, Gross and Szwec Inducted
The Brookville High School Athletic Hall of Fame added three new members last Saturday night.  Former athletes Courtney Boyd (basketball/softball, class of 2010) and Tim Szwec (wrestling, cross country, track, class of 1986) joined long time Brookville coach Chuck Gross (cross country, basketball, baseball & track) as HOF inductees.  The evening included a reception and ceremony with presentation of the inductees before the community at the basketball game.  You can see video of the acceptance speeches on our YouTube channel here, here and here. You can view a few additional photos from the event on our website, here.

Boyd graduated from BHS in 2010 and received her Bachelor and Master Degree in Education from Wright State University. During her senior year, Courtney averaged 30 points and 11 rebounds per game. She holds BHS girl's basketball records in points per game (43), season (662) and career (1576) and is the all-time leader in three-pointers (108).  Also as a senior, she was a McDonald's All American nominee. She was a four year varsity letter winner in basketball at Wright State.  Her junior year she was part of a team that earned the program's first trip to the Division I  NCAA Tournament.  Her senior year she started all 34 games and finished with 990 career points.

Chuck Gross graduated from Belmont High School and Bowling Green State University.  He taught one year in Beavercreek Schools and then spent 35 years, from 1974-2008 at Brookville.  During this time Mr. Gross coached both boys and girls at every level from middle thru high school.  Coach Gross's career varsity girls' basketball record included 365 wins.  He was honored at the Girls State Basketball Tournament for recording 300 victories and coaching basketball 25 consecutive years at the same high school. Chuck had numerous teams in both basketball and cross-country that won SWBL, sectional and regional titles.  His 1979 boys' cross-country team finished 3rd in the state.  During his tenure, he was named SWBL, District 15 and AP sports writers Coach-of-the-Year for numerous basketball and cross country seasons.

Tim Szwec was a three sport athlete at Brookville.  He graduated from BHS in 1986 and spent two years at West Point before transferring and graduating from Cornell in 1992 with a Degree in Natural Resources.  Tim was a four year wrestler for Brookville.  By his junior year he had won SWBL, District, and Regional titles.  His senior year established him as one of Brookville's all-time outstanding wrestlers, finishing with a record of 36-2 winning the SWBL, District, Regional and eventually State Championship at 167 lbs. Tim was honored as 1st Team All-Area and Most Valuable Wrestler.  Also, in 1985 he received the school's Greenblat-Warnke Award for excellence in athletics and academics.  Tim earned four varsity letters wrestling in college and he received Ivy League First Team wrestling honors.

We congratulate these individuals for being recognized as the 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees at BHS.
Superintendent's Corner
Signs That The 2016-2017 School Year Will Be Here Soon
At the elementary this week students celebrated the fact that we reached the 100th day of school. At the high school, the stakes are a little higher, but the message is the same, next school year is just around the corner. Led by grades 7-9 counselor, Mrs. Spangler, the 8th graders and their parents met last Wednesday night to go over the process of scheduling for next year's classes.  This included some thought provoking information about graduation requirements, career exploration and course selection.  If you are the parent of an eighth grader and missed this program you can view the PowerPoint Mrs. Spangler used here . This should also trigger a notice to the parents of upperclassman (grades 9-11) that your children will soon be scheduling for next school year.

If you have questions regarding the scheduling process or want insider information on advice you may give your child when scheduling, we encourage you to reach out to their building principal or counselor.
The 100th Day of School Celebration
How many different ways can you show or display an understanding of the number 100? Well, since you asked; kindergartners can dress up as being 100 years old, second graders went online to research what it was like to live 100 years ago, and first graders put on an entire program for parents and grandparents featuring songs and dance movements about the 100th day of school!

What has become a common theme for elementary schools in the Miami Valley and around the state is this annual celebration of the 100th day of the school year. Brookville Elementary teachers have uniquely fused learning objectives into a day full of activities. Mrs. Monroe's kindergarten class made pizzas; one real and one made out of paper as a 3D object with 100 pieces of scrap paper. Our second graders are using this opportunity to present information using posters, PowerPoint, Prezi and 3D models.

This day all adds up to 100 percent fun in this learning experience wrapped around acknowledging that we have now been through 100 days of this school year. Take time to check out more photos in the photo gallery.

All in the Family...Sisters Share Bond of Cheering Together
Friday night lights meant a little something special in one family this fall. High school sisters, senior Breanna and freshman Brooklynn Skinner, enjoyed being teammates on the varsity football cheerleading squad. And now, this winter, they are able to extend that experience throughout the Blue Devil basketball season. While being sisters on the same unit can be trying at times, "...we get into arguments almost every practice..." says Brooklynn, the girls both know this year together has been priceless.

Brooklynn (L) and Breanna (R)
Breanna and Brooklynn both began cheering through a local gym at the age of 7.  They also began their tenure cheerleading for the Blue Devils as seventh graders. With Breanna as the trailblazer, Brooklynn quickly became interested by watching her older sibling. This year is special, however, since they are now able to cheer together in high school. Cheering for an undefeated team during a historical football season was memorable.  Brooklynn points to, "...when we finished 10-0 and being able to run onto the field with her...", as her favorite memory of the year thus far. Both girls highlight pumping up the crowd, especially during close, intense games, as what they like best about being Blue Devil cheerleaders.

B rooklynn admits that having an older sister on the squad has served her well.  "I already knew all of the older cheerleaders because of her. I also knew a lot of the material just from watching her cheer." Breanna took time to offer a little sisterly advice to her younger teammate, "...always be a positive role model for your peers and younger kids that look up to you'" she stated. While we wish both girls the very best in future endeavors, we say cherish the moment.  It isn't everyday you get to be part of something this special with your sister !
Help Grandma Understand Dialysis...
Biology Class Engages in Project Based Learning
You just got a letter from your favorite aunt saying that your grandma's latest doctor's visit revealed some troubling news. Grandma has to begin dialysis treatment. Your aunt has reached out for your help. She would like you to create a video helping grandma understand what dialysis is and what she should expect.

Teaching Gram Gram Dialysis
Teaching Gram Gram Dialysis
This is the task that Mr. Davidson, one of our high school biology teachers, recently posed to his students. Brookville teachers have been asked, as an instructional goal this year, to increase the number of project based learning (PBL) experiences. Mr. Davidson merged the PBL principles with modern digital applications to allow his students to acquire knowledge about dialysis. Rather than simply lecturing students on this topic he felt this method "...forced students to research and personalize the content." Students were given the option of creating iMovies with voice over or actually being a visual part of the video.

Classmates were asked to complete a KWL chart (a graphic organizer of 'what you already know', 'what you want to know' and 'ultimately what you learned'). A contract was designed by each cohort group to recognize every individual's part or role. Then, it was off to the movies. In the end, grandma was informed about different types of dialysis, how the process worked and what she should expect. We believe the videos also revealed some budding movie stars! You can view two additional video submissions on our YouTube channel here and here.
Staff Spotlight
Ms. Young
We would like to introduce you to Ms. Beth Young, our Library Media Specialist. The Staff Spotlight is a regular feature in the Blue Connector and is designed to assist you in getting to know our teachers and staff. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about Ms. Young and what she does as the Library Media Specialist.

Where is your hometown?
Washington, Indiana

Where do you live now?
I live in Englewood, Ohio.

How many years have you worked at Brookville?
I am in my 8th year at Brookville.

What is your position in the school district?
I am the Library Media Specialist for the district working with children in preschool through 3rd grade.

Tell us about your family and hobbies outside of teaching?
I am the oldest of 7 children, raised in a musical family, with both of my parents singing in church choirs, community theater and choruses. I enjoyed rural life of 4-H, gardening, exploring miles and miles of fields, woodlands and farms. If we wanted or needed to go to town 5 miles away, we biked it as youngsters. I continue those childhood experiences by gardening, running in the parks, cooking, reading, playing the ukulele and singing.

What is your favorite thing about working at Brookville Schools?
I like the way the community supports the education of the children. The sense of community spirit and pride carries over into the school environment and so the children feel well supported and free to be themselves. I also feel supported as a teacher and librarian. Our district supports innovation which is important for the creative aspects of working with others.

How do you spend June and July?
A great deal of time is spent doing physical things like yoga, exercise, cooking, gardening, reading, visiting family and friends, singing and enjoying life.

Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

Our current profile is of Amanda Domsitz, a 2008 graduate. Please take a moment to view her profile here. You can also view our past profiles on our website.
BIS Parent Group
A Frosty Winterfest...
In what has become a fun winter activity at Brookville Intermediate, the BIS parent's group hosted the 5th Annual Frosty Winterfest. Students in grades 4-8 were invited to stay after school last Friday and enjoy winter themed carnival type games, face painting (done by the BIS Art Club), refreshments and 90 minutes filled with friends and fun. For the second year in a row, approximately 200 students participated. For a $1 admission fee the students enjoy this  time together with their friends, playing games and being entered into a gift card raffle.

Our intermediate school students have come to love this event which is made possible by ".... the support and help of nearly 30 volunteers (parents, teachers and students)," according to Mrs. Ann Horvath, a parent who helps coordinate the event. The story of this program can best be told by some of the pictures we captured, which you can view here .
High Five's

Mrs. Charlotte Monroe
Brookville Elementary kindergarten teacher Charlotte Monroe was recently certified as a Resident Educator Summative Assessor (RESA).  This allows her to help assess and give feedback to new teachers who are working on their state licensure in the four year residency program.  We congratulate Mrs. Monroe and appreciate the professional support she will be providing new teachers.

Trevor Good
In the last Blue Connector we congratulated the BHS wrestling team on their tournament win at West Milton. We listed the wrestlers who had placed very high and inadvertently left out tournament champion Trevor Good.  We apologize for this oversight and would like to take this time to congratulate Trevor on what has been an outstanding senior wrestling season thus far.  To date Trevor's record stands at 18-2.
