A Grand Opening it Was!
August 17 marked the start of a new school year in Brookville. Open House nights were a huge success (we appreciate your attendance), the kindergarten bus ride went without a hitch, freshman orientation provided a nice transition and schedule pick up by our older students went well. All that was left was to get school underway.

first day of school
Brookville Schools could not be happier with how students and parents responded. The morning of our first day the rain ceased, the sun popped out and smiles were prevalent everywhere. This is one of those stories where a picture (or video) is worth a million words.  We invite you to visit our first day photo gallery here and take a moment to watch the video on the right of our elementary students arriving for their first day.
Superintendent Lays Out the 2016-17 District Goals
2016-17 Goals
Tuesday, August 16, all employees gathered for the school district annual kick off meeting.  Along with reviewing the status and achievements of last year's goals, Superintendent Tim Hopkins presented the instructional goals for this year. These goals typically fall into three specific categories.
  1. There are goals that are anchored in the Greater Dayton Learn-to-Earn initiatives. Research has shown that these initiatives will impact a child's chances of graduating from high school and having success in accredited post-secondary programs. The goals are achievement based and set benchmarks predominantly in grades 3 through 9. The focus is on our students success on state standardized test and earning core credits their freshman year. This year, goals were added around the new 'Prepared for Success' portion of the state's school district report card.
  2. Other goals focus on classroom instruction. These give specific methods of instruction or classroom activities that building administrators and teachers will put into practice throughout the year. The goals are embedded in best practices that enhance a child's learning experience.  This year the district will continue work in a) Project Based Learning, b) Career Connections and c) Non-Fiction Writing.
  3. Lastly, over recent years, school employees have been involved in 'Wellness Goals".  These goals range from increasing physical activity to promoting community service.  Staff is dividing into teams for friendly competition to promote goal achievement.
As a parent, guardian or community member we invite you to view the 2016-17 goals of your local school district.  We anticipate that you will see some of the work toward these goals in the homework and lessons being provided to your child.

Getting to Know Coach Hunley:

Brittany Hunley, a former graduate of BHS and current Intervention Specialist at Brookville High School was named as the new head coach of the High School Volleyball program this past spring. Coach Hunley brings her experience as both a player and previous coach at Tri-County North. We sat down with Coach Hunley recently to ask her a few questions.

How does it feel to be named as the head coach of the volleyball program you previously played in?

I am honored to be the head of the Brookville Volleyball Program. Coaching has always been a goal of mine that stemmed from my time playing in the program. To be able to give back to the school and program that taught me to love the game is an amazing feeling.

What has been your first impression of the girls while participating in summer league and open gyms?
Their commitment and dedication to the team is astounding. We consistently had 15-20 girls attend open gyms three days a week starting at 8:00 am. It is incredible as a coach to see girls giving up part of their summer to better themselves and their team. The amount of improvement across the board is exciting. I am looking forward to see what each girl brings to the team this season.

What are your initial goals for the team in this your first season as head coach?
My initial goal for our program is to give each player the ability and encouragement they need to be the best volleyball player they can be. I want the girls to enjoy their time in practice and in matches and leave each day feeling like they accomplished something. I want the girls to strive for greatness and stop at nothing less.

Is there anything else you would like to add for Devil fans to know as you embark on this newest endeavor?
I encourage everyone to come out and support our Lady Devils this season. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by what we will bring to the court. Thank you for your continued support of our program as well as the countless other programs at BHS. Go Blue!

School Year Begins with New Faces on Staff
Teresa Penick, Michael Hoover
and Karen Peak
Brookville Schools opened last week by welcoming 15 new employees. Amongst this group are four new faces in support personnel roles, one new administrator and ten new classroom teachers. They vary from Brookville High School graduates to individuals who grew up in military families and have lived all over the United States. Monday, August 15, Superintendent Tim Hopkins facilitated the New Teacher Orientation.  Staff members were introduced to available Board of Education members, the District Management Team, the Brookville Teachers Association leadership and central office staff.  During this time topics were covered ranging from how to fill out a form requesting a bus for a field trip to making sure the necessary steps are taken to move from a resident educators license to a full fledged teacher's license. Most importantly, new staff were made to feel welcomed and familiarize themselves with all things necessary to start their teaching experience in Brookville in a positive fashion.
