BHS Spanish Class Wins BIG
Mrs. Hutsell Adds 20 New iPads
High School Spanish teacher Paula Hutsell recently hit a bonanza by winning a contest that brought 20 new iPads to her classroom. The contest was available through Duolingo, a free language-learning platform that includes a language-learning website and app. The iPads, delivered to BHS last week are valued at $9,000.

Mrs. Hutsell used Duolingo personally several years ago to learn Portuguese before going to visit a former exchange student.  After that experience she began to assign 8 to 16 hours of Duolingo as a summer review activity to her upper level Spanish students. In her contest application Mrs. Hutsell remarked that, "the growth I've seen in my students' language abilities over the past three summers since I've started assigning Duolingo, is amazing!  It's the best results I've seen in my 23 years of teaching."  The concept has grown in the department and Duolingo is now used as summer review in Spanish I and French classes.

The use of the program brings us to the iPads. Once a teacher's contest application was chosen as a finalist, then online voting through the company took place to determine the winning schools. Mrs. Hutsell asked everyone to spread the word and vote and the Brookville community did the rest!

Mrs. Hutsell hopes to use the iPads in class for incorporating 10-15 minute warmups, breaks from the normal classroom routine, electronic learning stations and means for further independent study. While she offers that this is no replacement for personal interaction during her foreign language class, it does offer a "welcome change of pace."

We congratulate Mrs. Hutsell for entering and winning a contest that puts these technology tools into the hands of our students. We look forward to muy grande results!

7th Annual Brookville Breast Cancer Walk is on the Horizon
Saturday, September 24, is the date of the 7th Annual Brookville Community Breast Cancer Walk. Again this year, all proceeds support the Pink Ribbon Girls and stay here in the immediate area. Brookville Schools is an active partner and participant of this effort and again this year school employees, their families and friends are signing up in large numbers to join the walk.  Not only do we see it as a way to give financial support to a worthy cause, but it is positive role modeling for the children of our school district. "Our goal is to do everything possible to make this a community wide event," says superintendent Tim Hopkins.

Last year the Brookville Breast Cancer walk donated $20,000 to the Pink Ribbon Girls. That amount was three times more than similar events in Centerville. The over $7,000 contributed by participants who registered through Brookville Schools was enough to provided 875 meals. Pink Ribbon Girls provides much more than meals. They also provide transportation to and from treatment, house cleaning and emotional support.

While we are proud of these numbers, we hope to do more.  Won't you join us this year?  A registration flier is available on www.pinkribbongirls.org or the Facebook page Brookville Pink Ladies. The walk is Saturday, September 24 at 9 am.  More information can be acquired by contacting Gale Colston, the event coordinator at 833-5457.

IMPACT Class New to BHS
First Year Course Made Available to Seniors
IMPACT has arrived at BHS. IMPACT is an acronym for "I Make a Positive Authentic Contribution Today". This new course is designed to address much of what K-12 educators believe are needed skills within the higher-education classroom and workforce. IMPACT teaches and encourages 21st century skills and includes attributes such as contributing to a team, project development, constructive feedback and reflection, and redesign. Along the way students will be coached in what today's employers call 'soft skills' such as the ability to interact with others, critical thinking regarding content and working collaboratively to reach meaningful outcomes.  Added elements such as resume building and interview skills, as well as learning the importance of one's electronic footprint, are being stressed.

Design challenges and collaborative projects will be used to teach many of these skills along the way. Take a moment to view photos from a couple of the first projects in the gallery here. Ultimately participants will infuse cross-curricular knowledge to answer essential questions. These essential questions revolve around a current world, national or community problem that affects students. Classmates will be charged with seeking advice from real world resources and experts that allow them to design reasonable solutions to such problems.

Cam Alber works against
the clock to beat his competition.
The course is being taught by Mr. Scott Caudill and Mrs. Kristin Ketron. These two veteran educators bring a healthy blend of technology and business along with the social sciences. Both will quickly tell you that students will be charged with gathering valuable knowledge toward addressing their essential question from resources outside the classroom. Mr. Caudill and Mrs. Ketron spent most of last year and this past summer with their sleeves rolled up, elbow deep in professional development to lead the course.

Each project will have an embedded authentic audience from within the community or be seeking such an audience to hear and provide feedback on their outcomes. Classes such as IMPACT reflect how classroom education is attempting to support what employers are requesting from our students. More and more we hear employers say, "we can teach them how to do their job if they just understand the importance of working together, problem solving, being able to take constructive criticism, attendance and being drug free." Hopefully this new BHS course will address these skills necessary for workplace success.

Golf Season is in Full Swing
The BHS Golf team is always one of the first Fall programs to begin their season. This year is no exception. Coach Scott Caudill commented that "we played very well in the early part of the season finishing 5th of 17 teams in the big school dominated Miamisburg Invitational. That performance was followed by finishing 3rd of 13 teams in both the Brookville Invitational and the Ridge Classic." Coach Caudill continued stating, "This was a reflection of the time this group put into honing their golf game over the summer."

The team is made up of a nice blend of veterans and young players. Seniors and veteran team members Blake Mullennix and Cody Cox lead the group. Additional team members include junior Ian Williamson, sophomores Parker Holt and Jagan Wilkerson and freshman Kyle Neff. Neff is new to the team and Williamson is experiencing his first season as a varsity player. Mullennix has has been red hot to start the year medaling in both the Brookville and Ridge Classic tournaments. Currently the team carries a record of 35 wins and 10 losses.

Traditionally, Oakwood is the SWBL frontrunner. However, Coach Caudill believes that if his team continues to improve throughout the season, a finish in the top half of the league is very possible.  Most importantly Coach Caudill is very complimentary of the players on his team. "They are outstanding young men who have represented their school well," he added. You can find the golf team schedule here.

We congratulate the golfers on their success thus far and wish them the best the remainder of the season.

District PBL Initiative is Reliant Upon Community Partnerships
After a successful entry into Project Based Learning in 2015-16, Brookville Schools will up the ante with even more high quality "PBL" in classrooms this year. School superintendent, Tim Hopkins, has released a district goal this year stating "Teachers will engage each student, congruent with building level expectations, in a high quality project based learning experience(s)." One understanding of such teaching and learning is that resources and partnerships within the community are a necessity. As a school district, we need the expertise of individuals and businesses to support our efforts in the classroom.

Brookville Local Schools ask for your help as we generate a database of community contacts, industry professionals and volunteers that we can call on (and also support) as we increase authentic project based learning. We have prepared a brief questionnaire for completion by our community members and business professionals. Please click here for access.

Partnerships with our community and business professionals have always been strong. The questionnaire is designed to help make meaningful and timely connections between our community and our school. If you are interested in partnering with us please fill out the questionnaire below.  We are hopeful that the information we receive through the completed questionnaires will help to match student and school projects with outside expertise.
  • Please note that contact may depend upon the projects students are working on or school initiatives and you may not be contacted immediately.  If you have a specific or timely partnership please contact the building principal.
  • No information will be sold or distributed to any third parties.
For additional information or questions contact the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Mrs. Amy Anyanwu at (937) 833-6731 ext. 2111 or Superintendent Hopkins at (937) 833-2181.

I also really enjoy being outside and doing thrill seeking activities such as white water rafting, dirt biking, pole vaulting and snorkeling.

What is your favorite thing about teaching in Brookville?
My favorite thing about Brookville is my students. The students are very caring and always very encouraging toward each other, even when in competition. They have such good manners and they carry themselves well through the day. The students make my job always one that I enjoy coming to in the morning, no matter the weather. They are always putting a smile on my face with the funny things they come up with, the jokes they have for me each morning or something new to share, like a drawing or story. My students are by far the highlight of my day at Brookville and they are what I look forward to every day.
