BIS Welcomes New Students
Breakfast for New Students & Parents Has Become an Annual Event
Imagine what it must be like to enter a new school district in the middle grades. For some, life throws you that curveball. At Brookville Intermediate there is a plan to try and make the transition a little easier. For the last seven years, the counselors and administrators have hosted a New Student Breakfast for children and parents that entered the community over the summer. Everyone in attendance enjoys a continental breakfast, entertainment is provided by the Shades of Blue high school show choir and door prizes of 'Welcome to Brookville' items are given away to each student.

These new students are in grades 4-8. Making sure they are comfortable in a new setting, have an opportunity to put the names and faces of key school personnel together and realize we are happy to have them is very important. BIS counselors, Mrs. Worley and Mrs. Spangler, facilitate the event and we are fortunate that a number of local business and groups provide the breakfast and door prizes. We want to thank Candy Break, Hipsters, Blue Finery, Carmella's, Pizza Hut, Subway, Dayton Metro Library, Marchele Pretzels, our Booster Club and Athletic Department for all helping this program be such a great success.

Lastly, WELCOME NEW STUDENTS!! We are glad to have you.

Summer Learning Outside the Classroom - Air Camp
Two Brookville students, freshman Ethan Landis and seventh grader Konor Clark-Johnson completed Air Camp at Wright State University this summer. "Air Camp inspires middle school students to develop a passion for the STEM fields by exploring these subjects as they apply to aviation and aeronautics. They learn the science and evolution of flight, take the controls during an actual flight under the guidance of a certified pilot instructor, and collaborate with their peers in immersive activities at unique aviation sites throughout the Dayton area," said Shannon Coblenz, Air camp Director of Operations.

Both Clark-Johnson and Landis reflected on the opportunity as a great experience. Konor noted that the trip to Sinclair Community College's flight simulator aviation school and the Wright Patterson test labs still stand out as his favorites. Ethan meanwhile mentioned that flying the plane was by far his highlight. Both young men added that this encouraged them to pursue engineering interests in the future. Ethan would like to be an aeronautical space engineer and Konor is leaning toward structural engineering.

There were only 136 middle school students from across the nation selected to attend one of Air Camp's three summer sessions in the Dayton region. As Brookville students fortunate to be selected, both young men said they would encourage their peers to pursue such an opportunity. While Ethan concluded "this is a great way to see if this is something they want to do in the future", Konor mentioned that it is a great way to learn about aviation. "You actually get to fly on a plane as a co-pilot and get a flight suit!"

Congratulations to these students for taking advantage of a summer learning opportunity outside the normal classroom. If you would like more information about the program, visit www.aircampusa.com or look on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

BES Annual Walk to School Day
Students Enjoyed Wonderful Weather at Annual Event
September 16th turned out to be sunny and warm, a perfect day to get outside and participate in the 6th Annual Walk to School Day at Brookville Elementary.  Once again, our students, parents, grandparents and caregivers, along with teachers, administrators and our local first responders participated, celebrating safe streets, healthy livestyles and clean air.

This year our elementary students were joined by senior members of our fall athletic teams. Everyone enjoyed the short walk from Westbrook Park to the elementary building, carrying signs, smiling and having fun. Our senior students formed a "tunnel" for the students as they entered the building to begin the school day. Take a moment and enjoy these photos from the event.

BHS Cross Country Teams on Course for Banner Year
There is no question to the fact that when it comes to tradition, Brookville's cross country program is rich.  Going back decades, the program has had both individuals and teams amongst the best in the state.  If the early part of the 2016 season is any indication, this year's teams, both men and women, will simply add to that legacy.

Second year head coach Jon Bland knows that the path will not be easy. He continues to remind his runners of the old saying, "everyone has the will to win but few have the will to prepare to win. I couldn't be happier with our progress and success thus far," he adds.

There are 30 members on the two teams this year, twice as many runners as last year. Coach Bland pointed out that the depth of sixteen boys and fourteen girls has certainly been a key to the team's success. Of note is the fact that those numbers include 13 freshmen, 5 sophomores, 8 juniors and just 4 seniors. This certainly bodes well for the future.

The women's team finished first at the Eaton Meet, and 2nd at our own Brookville Invitational with an overall record of 29-22. Most of those losses have come to larger schools with very strong programs. The men's team currently stands at 58 wins and 2 losses with Invitational wins at Eaton, Greenville and Brookville.

There is a note of caution, however. Coach Bland points out that for the ladies, the SWBL will still be a huge challenge because of perennial powers Oakwood and Bellbrook. And, as Coach noted, "the boys SWBL is crazy good and well balanced this year." There are multiple state ranked teams and on a good day Brookville could win the league, but as many as four other teams can make that same boast.

Coach was quick to give props to Maggie Hart and Deanna Winner on the girls side and Jeremy Page and Spencer Schick on the boys side for being team leaders. This group is noted for bringing a positive attitude and will to work hard every day to practice. They serve as great leaders for the young team.

As the season progresses, Blue Devil Cross Country is a program to watch. If they can maintain the early season momentum we are in store for a great finish.  We say, GOOD LUCK RUNNERS!!
Going "Google"
Beginning last November, Brookville Local Schools "Went Google"! This process of going Google started with a cost effective email solution that saved the district dollars and provided HS students with email by switching to free Google email.  Since that time the addition of Google Apps has made an impact for much more than just email. Over 93,000 Google Docs have been created by students and staff. Over 2,100 of those Docs have been shared for collaboration! Other applications like Google Sheets and Google Slides are being used regularly as well. To date, 224 Brookville Users, mostly staff, are coordinating events, sharing activities, scheduling meetings and reserving school spaces using Google Calendar.

One of the most exciting parts to Google Apps for Education is called Google Classroom.  This application is a free productivity tool designed especially for blended learning and  helps support classroom communication, assignment distribution,  grading and feedback. Another key component of Google has been the sustained ability to connect with current students and future alumni.  Our hope as a district is to continue using this tool to stay connected with our graduates even after they graduate.
Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

Our current profile is of Nikki Aills, a 2005 graduate. Please take a moment to view this latest profile  here. You can also view our past profiles on our  website.

FFA Soil Judging

On 9/8 the first year "Ag" members of the Brookville FFA program competed in the county soils contest at the Sycamore Conservation Education Demonstration Farm. With little time to prepare for this early school year contest these first year students did a great job! We would like to highlight our highest placer who finished 14th in the rural contest out of a field of 63 students, Kristin Denlinger. Two other top 20 finishes included Johnathon Mitchell and Elizabeth Dillion.

Ball Field Volunteers

On Sunday, September 11, nearly 40 volunteers came out to do general sprucing up of the baseball and softball fields. Significant equipment was donated in the way of bucket trucks and other helpful tools. Painting, trimming of brush and tree limbs, and discarding the old concession stand highlighted the day. Parents, players and coaches all helped out. We salute these volunteers for giving up a day of their weekend.  School employees and student-athletes are very appreciative of your great support!!
