Homecoming Week 2016
A Review Of The Annual Festivities
Each Fall, Homecoming weekend is a special time.  Despite a few hiccups, this year was no exception.

The week began with Clash of the Classes the previous Saturday afternoon. Students from each of the high school grade levels wore their assigned class color tee shirt and competed with one another. The competition centered around fun games like the 'egg toss' and relay races. This event is typically followed by the powder puff football game but because of several schedule conflicts that game had to be moved to later in the Fall.

On Wednesday, the Homecoming Parade had to be cancelled due to on and off all day rain. However, Thursday night was exciting as the volleyball team hosted Eaton in their annual "Volley for the Cure" game with special tribute to area breast cancer survivors. Fundraising from the game will be donated to the Pink Ribbon Girls.

Friday night the Homecoming attendants were able to participate in a mini-parade from the front of the high school to the football field. After what had been a very rainy day the sun popped out for an excellent pre-game presentation of the royalty court. Special congratulations go to the 2016 Homecoming King Cam Alber and Queen Sydney Carnes. The remaining 2016 attendants included:

Freshmen: Hanna Gearhart & Ben Smith
Sophomores: Jordyn Cherry & Ben Brophy
Juniors: Katie Shatsby & Seth Wright
CTC Juniors:  Luke Gearhart & Sierra Talley
Seniors: Monica Impson & Alex Mills - Olivia Carey & Christian Berry
CTC Seniors:  Lindsey Denlinger & Colby Kerr

While the outcome of the football game wasn't what we had hoped (a loss to Oakwood), the atmosphere and crowd made for a great high school homecoming environment. Saturday night was all smiles as the high school had a huge turnout for the dance titled Mexican Fiesta! Students looked great and enjoyed music, dancing and an all around good time. More photos are available to viewing in our gallery here.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our high school student council under the direction of Mrs. Amy Boyd, for planning and orchestrating another wonderful homecoming week!!

Stepping Up The Support
I n the way of steps, it could be measured as a 5K walk or 3.1 miles.  In the way of numbers it could be measured as 328 registrations including family and friends, 85% of our employees.  In the way of dollars it can be measured by what appears to be headed toward a number that exceeds $10,000. However, most of all, seeing how school employees stepped up their support of Brookville's 7th Annual Breast Cancer Walk has to be measured in the heart. These numbers are indicative of individuals who are caring, giving, compassionate and supportive. For the third consecutive year, Brookville Schools joined with Mrs. Gale Colston and her team who coordinate and host this event which provides financial support to the Pink Ribbon Girls of southwestern Ohio. This year, it is estimated that over 900 walkers showed their support on September 24th.

For the 3rd year, the breast cancer walk was the September Wellness Goal for Brookville School employees. Last year, we donated over $7,000. Our employees were thrilled at the opening staff meeting to hear from Mrs. Terrilyn Corbolotti, a Brookville survivor who benefited from the Pink Ribbon Girls while fighting breast cancer. Well before the official start of the wellness goal on September 1, the registrations and donations began to flow in by the dozens. On event day, three school buses full of walkers were transported to the start line.

This year Brookville Schools saw our students step up to the challenge with members of BHS student council and girls' soccer team along with the BIS volleyball teams, student council and Builders Club showing up in strong numbers for the Walk. These young people are getting an early jump on realizing the importance of giving back as part of a community to a cause that supports those facing adversity.  Please view the rest of our photos from that day here.

We wish to salute Mrs. Colston and her team on the amazing job she has done with the Annual Breast Cancer Walk. We encourage everyone to plan to participate next fall as we work together to build this community event!

BIS Student Council Enjoys Leadership Retreat
Learning to Lead
Members of the Intermediate School Student Council spent a half-day on Friday, September 16th in a Leadership Retreat that offered training to support their decision to be school leaders.  Student Council advisor Mrs. Belinda Linville indicated that the goals of the retreat were as follows:
  • Team Building
  • Learning Basic Leadership Skills
  • Understanding Both Ours and Others' Leadership Styles
  • Practicing Communication Skills
  • Learning Important Elements of Event Brainstorming and Planning
What a fantastic set of skills to be taught and shared with young adults identified as leaders amongst their peers!!

The retreat took place in the district Board of Education room which provided a nice environment outside the normal classroom.  The retreat consisted of numerous exercises that got students on their feet and engaged. Just as a small sampling, the students participated in: Human Bingo, formed a Human Knot, gave Persuasive Speeches, studied leadership styles, did several Think/Pair/Share activities with small group work being shared out to the larger group. They finished their day setting 4-5 achievable goals or activities for the year. More photos from their retreat are located here.

The lessons and skills taught at school often go beyond reading, writing, arithmetic and the core content areas.  On this day these intermediate school student council members were exposed to learning attributes that will hopefully last them a lifetime.  We salute their decision to become leaders in their school building and look forward to seeing the results of their efforts.
SWAP Day Brings Hundreds of Parents to High School
A Tradition Continues
As a general rule of thumb, the further a student advances through the school district the less chance that child's parent is involved in actual school days. Other than attendance at extracurricular activities high school parents seldom have reason to be at school or interact with teachers.  While most elementary buildings have active volunteer programs, homeroom parents and PTA organizations, such hands-on parental involvement begins to wane as students move up to higher grades. That certainly isn't because high school parents do not care - it is just that with age comes more independence, students become less comfortable with mom and dad around and the need is often not as great.  This is true in all school districts.

Despite this, at BHS, there is still one day every fall where parents come out in large numbers to attend school with their children. By our observation and pictures the students LOVE IT !!  It is referred to as SWAP Day and it has taken place at BHS for several decades.  Parents are invited to spend the day at school with their child, which begins with a brief overview of how to navigate the schedule and the building. Most teachers have activities planned in their rooms that allow parents to partner with their child and be engaged. Parents get an opportunity to meet teachers, become familiar with their child's daily schedule and embrace the feel and environment of our high school.

Over the years parents leave BHS on SWAP Day with a smile on their face and an appreciation of getting to spend the day with their teenager. Students in turn, let their guard down and seem to truly enjoy the company of mom or dad.  As a school district we appreciate the time and effort given by staff, parents and administration to plan this event.  It is one more way for parents to be engaged in their child's education.  Please visit this gallery of SWAP Day 2016 pictures
Elementary Dads Are Ready for School
Watch D.O.G.S. Kicks Off With Annual Pizza Party
If there were any question as to whether the elementary Watch D.O.G.S. pro gram is still going strong the answer was provided in a big way last Thursday night.  In the cafeteria of Brookville High School the annual 'sign up' night for the Watch D.O.G.S. program was held.  Elementary principal, Mrs. Stephanie Hinds, was pleased to report that between dads and their children, 268 pre-registered for the event.  It was a huge turnout as so many have come to understand the critical value of a father being a part of the child's education.

After enjoying pizza provided by our school food service program, Mrs. Hinds gave a brief overview of the importance of Watch D.O.G.S. and thanked all the fathers in attendance for their involvement. Many of them have now participated for multiple years as siblings have gone through the building. After everyone enjoyed the pizza and spent time visiting with one another, the line formed to sign up for Watch D.O.G.S. duty.

This program is coordinated by elementary building secretary Mrs. Laura Staggs.  If you were not able to attend and would still like to spend a day as "Watch D.O.G.S.", please call Mrs. Staggs at 937-833-6796. Brookville Schools would like to thank all the dads involved. While the extra set of eyes and hands in the building are helpful, being engaged in your child's school and education sends a tremendous message. This lets them know that their schooling is important and you care about them and their classmates. What a powerful message from a father!  Please take time to view our gallery of pics from the evening
Staff Spotlight
We would like to introduce you to Mrs. Sherril Spangler, one of our guidance counselors.

The Staff Spotlight is a regular feature in the Blue Connector and is designed to assist you in getting to know our teachers and staff. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about Mrs. Spangler and what she does at Brookville Schools.

Where is your hometown?
Sherwood, Ohio, a small town in northwest Ohio.

Where do you live now?
I have lived in Brookville for over twenty years, so we call Brookville home.

How many years of teaching and guidance experience do you have?
I was a classroom teacher for 19 years and I have been a school counselor for 10 years.

How many years have you worked in Brookville?
I have been employed by Brookville Local Schools for 26 years. I was hired as a 5th grade teacher, but I also taught kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grades, before becoming a guidance counselor.

What is your position in the district?
I am the school counselor for grades 7-9, as well as the Link Crew and Class of 2017 adviser.

Tell us about your family and hobbies outside of being the guidance counselor.
My husband, Brian, is an engineer at Inteva Products in Vandalia. I have a son, Chaise, who will be graduating from the University of Cincinnati this December and a son, Bryce, who is a senior here at Brookville. I love spending time with my family and friends, trying new restaurants and reading.

What is your favorite thing about working at Brookville Schools?
There are so many things about Brookville; the sense of community and pride that we have in our schools, the staff that I work with, but most of all, I love working with our students. The best thing about my job is that I am always here to help.

How do you spend June and July?
I spend as much time outside as possible. Laying in my hammock reading a book, spending time with my family, watching a baseball game, lounging around in the water or riding on my husband's Harley.

Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

Vo Ag Members Not Afraid to Get Their Hands Dirty
Students Attend District Soil Judging
Thursday, September 29 was the District Soil Judging contest for participating members of the BHS Vocational Agriculture program.  First year class instructor and FFA Advisor Mr. Nick Wright commented that "the rainy day caused things to be a little swampy and a few busses got stuck," but the participating students, "toughed out the elements and showed dedication working diligently the whole day."  BHS students who took part in the competition included Chase Davis, Alex Monnig, Zack Chambers and Derek Winner.

Soil judging serves as a tool to teach VoAg students about soil science and the use and management of soils.  It is a program designed to guide them toward the understanding and importance of a) basic soil properties as they affect the use and management of soils and b) management practices applicable to the care and management of soil and water.  On the day of the contest, students get out into the fields where there are pre-prepared study areas. They are then charged with the task of determining the levels of phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and soil pH in the land along with other soil features and treatments. This is a great learning experience that allows vocational agriculture students to display the knowledge learned in the classroom.  We would like to congratulate our top scorer, Derek Winner, who placed 47th of 227 contestants.
High Five's

Senior Golfer Blake Mullennix:

Congratulations to senior golfer Blake Mullennix who has qualified to compete in the Southwest District Golf Tournament. By virtue of a score of 77 last Wednesday at Pipestone Golf Course in Miamisburg, Blake advanced to the Division II District Tournament. He will tee off at 10:40 a.m. Friday, October 7 at Glenview Golf Course in Cincinnati. Our golf team had a great sectional tournament finishing in a stroke tie for fourth which would have qualified them a second year in a row for the district tournament.  However, by tiebreaker they ended in 5th place. Great job, Blake, Coach Caudill and golfers!!

Girls Tennis Team:

Congratulations to our girls' tennis team that finished third in the SWBL Southwestern Division.  The girls were right behind perennial powers Oakwood and Bellbrook. The team was led by senior 1st singles player Laura Bowen who made it to the finals and finished second. Third place finishes were recorded by 2nd singles player Grace Rohrer and 3rd singles player Leena Kokladas. The first doubles team of Madee Rozelle and Allison Winterbotham finished 4th and the second doubles team of Erin Tomlin and Willow Bragg finished 6th. This was an outstanding team effort in a tough SWBL Tournament. Congratulations to Coach Wright and all the girls.
