Speed Stacks Comes to BES
Stackers Take The Challenge
Under the direction of physical education teacher, Mr. Allen Arnett, the sport of speed stacking was on display at Brookville Elementary. On Thursday evening, February 16, students in grades 1-3 were invited to participate in a speed stacking tournament. They raced against the clock and other students in their own grade for prizes. Tournament rules provided that each student was given three opportunities with scores recorded. The cost to enter was $5 and the proceeds will be used to purchase equipment that will benefit the elementary school.

Speed Stacking, as an event, can be found in 54 countries with programs in 45,185 schools and organizations. Stacking allows for an amazing combination of fitness, agility, concentration and quickness. Check out this video which introduces the sport.

If you want to see our students as they take on the challenge, take a moment to see video and photographs from our first ever BES Speed Stacking Tournament on our YouTube channel and the photo gallery here.

Staff Rallies Behind "Go Red for Women" Campaign
Valentine's Day 2017 brought out a special splash of red in Brookville Schools. As an initiative through the S.A.D.D. Club, led by co-advisor Mrs. Herbert, the staff donned red shirts they purchased in support of the American Heart Association . The AHA uses the month of February to promote women's heart health. Nearly 500,000 women a year die from cardiovascular disease, yet women often are not paying attention. Many dismiss it as an older man's disease. To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease & stroke as the number one killer of women, the AHA created Go Red For Women as a way to empower them to take charge of their heart health.

Seeing this as a worthy cause, over recent years Mrs. Herbert has asked students and staff to wear red one day in February in a show of support. This year Valentine's Day was the perfect opportunity. The AHA made red, American Heart tee shirts available to the staff and students for a $10.00 donation. As has become so customary of the staff of Brookville Schools, dozens bought the shirts and wore them February 14.

When the event was over, our staff and students had raised over $1,150 to support the AHA. You can view numerous fun pictures of our staff wearing red that day along with photos from last year in our website gallery here Special commendations go out to Mrs. Herbert and the S.A.D.D. Club for such a successful effort. Let it be a reminder to all our female readers that YOUR heart health is important!

What Will Your Legacy Be?
7th Graders Experience Project Based Learning
Using the instructional technique of Project Based Learning ("PBL") continues to be a district goal at Brookville Schools and our 7th grade Social Studies students recently participated in a PBL experience. Students started by taking a walking field trip around the school to see evidence of people's legacy in our own hallways. They noted that our auditorium is named after Ruthanne Strausburg, a former teacher and principal who made a huge impact on our community. They paused to examine the achievements of prior students and staff on our various Halls of Fame. Then, they were posed with the question of their PBL: "What Will Your Legacy Be?"

Students were told to imagine that they were 90 years old and looking back on their life. What would they want to be their accomplishments? For what idea, invention, or accomplishment would they want to be known? What will their legacy be? They brainstormed possible future achievements, then picked one to focus on and wrote a paragraph explaining what they achieved in their life and how they were able to accomplish it. Next, they were introduced to the ancient Greeks and their legacy in fields such as architecture, philosophy, democracy, and the arts. The 7 th graders then connected their legacy to that of the Greeks. Rome was next, with enduring impacts such as tripartite government and the Colosseum. Students connected their achievement to that of the Roman's.

Finally, students had to answer the question of how their achievement will be remembered. Abraham Lincoln has the Lincoln Memorial, Babe Ruth is commemorated in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park, and Dr. Seuss has a sculpture garden in his hometown. Our 7 th graders created a form of Greco-Roman art in commemoration of their achievement. Mosaics, murals, and statues were the most popular forms of art to show the future legacy of our students.

Understanding the value of leaving a legacy has tremendous impact. Being able to envision such an accomplishment at a young age can help shape how someone lives and pursues their dreams. We believe this example of project based learning allowed our students to not only understand the Greek and Roman cultures but also envision how they may impact the future of our own community and nation. Mrs. Dorsey compiled photos from the project into a video which was played during last week's BIS Gallery Night. That video can be seen on our YouTube channel here. You can also see a few photos of this project here, and photo galleries of other project based learning lessons from this year and last year at the galleries here, here and here.
Blue Devil Athletics
At this time, the tournament trail is the focus for our winter athletic teams. Here is just a thumbnail sketch of some recent highlights and upcoming events:

Boys' Basketball - The boys' basketball team concluded one of the program's' most successful seasons in school history. On Friday, February 17th they enjoyed 'Senior Night' with a 46-40 win over Monroe. The win moved their final record to 18-3. The eight seniors recognized that evening can certainly be proud of their final season on the hardwood. The team garnered a third seed for the upcoming OHSAA Sectional Tournament. Their first game will be this Saturday, February 25 versus Northridge. The game will be played at 4:30 pm at Northmont High School. Click here to view the Boys Bracket.

Wrestling - The Blue Devil grapplers finished their regular season this past weekend by competing in the SWBL Championships at Madison High School with a 6th place finish out of 14 teams. Individual wrestler highlights include a championship at 160 lbs. by senior Landon Armbruster, a second place finish by Justin Eyler at 182 lbs., and third place finishes by Peter Hummel at 152 lbs. and Josiah White at 170 lbs. To see the final results from the meet, click here. With the conclusion of the regular season our wrestlers will travel this weekend to Sidney Lehman to participate in the Division III Sectional Tournament. Wrestling will take place Friday night at 5pm and Saturday beginning at 10am.

Swimming - Our Water Devils are farthest along at this point in their post season. Their Sectional Tournament was held February 17th at Trotwood and BHS had two swimmers advance to the District Meet this past weekend at Miami University. Junior  Owen Mills competed in the 100 meter butterfly and swam a time of 1:02.07. This ended a very successful season for Owen. In the women's District Meet Sophomore Emma Swabb swam in both the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. For the second year in a row she qualified for the State swim meet. Emma will swim this Thursday, February 23 at Canton's CT Branin Natatorium in the 200 IM. Swabb missed competing in the 100 backstroke by 1 position. We wish her well this week. Go BLUE!

New Batting Cages Installed

With much financial support of the Athletic Boosters, a new softball and baseball hitting cage was installed in the Westbrook gym last week. Since the winter of 2006, the balcony of the gymnasium at the 4-12 building has housed the hitting cages. However, they could not be set up and used until the wrestling season was completed. With our wrestlers often advancing to the state tournament which takes place in early March, access was not available to the spring ball players. Our Booster Club stepped up in a big way to help purchase a new hitting cage which was installed and is already in use. The cage is lowered and raised electronically and will not hamper basketball play.  We thank the Boosters for their continued support which allowed the purchase of this equipment!

Brookville Intermediate Hosts First Ever Gallery Night
Parent-Teacher Conference Night Offers New Approach
The Wax Museum
You have read a number of articles in past editions of the Bl ue Connector  going back to last school year about our district goal to engage students in Project Based Learning "PBL". In furtherance of that district goal, the authentic work of our students was presented to parents, grandparents and others last week in our first ever Gallery Night held on Thursday, February 16th . Taking advantage of the already scheduled parent-teacher conferences, each grade level put PBL projects on display. This includes the project outlined in the article above, "What Will Your Legacy Be".

For the Gallery Night, parents were greeted at the door with a pamphlet that was created by our 8th grade STEAM class students (science / technology / engineering / art / math). The STEAM students had produced a QR code that could be read through an app on the parent's phone. The QR code gave visitors a schedule or location for each grade level's presentation of projects. This is truly an article where a picture or video is worth a million words. You can view the Gallery Night pamphlet explaining grade level projects here.

Take time to look inside Gallery Night by clicking through the photo gallery on our website here.   The high school Science Fair projects were also on display for parents the same evening. You can take a virtual tour of those projects here.
