When You Stack Up Against The Competition
BES Brothers Qualify in Cup Stacking
When elementary physical education teacher Mr. Arnett decided to introduce cup stacking to his students, he didn't know that he already had a couple of budding stars. Brothers Evan Hardin (3rd grade) and Brody Hardin (kindergarten) have emerged as a level above normal.

Evan and Brody Are Headed to the Jr. Olympics
Evan and Brody Are
Headed to the Jr. Olympics
Having established themselves locally as being very talented at cup stacking, parents Brent and Sarah Hardin, loaded the boys up recently for a regional competition at the Expo Center in Connersville, Indiana. Both were champions within their respective age groups. By becoming champions, they qualified to travel to Michigan in July to participate in the AAU Jr. Olympics in Cup Stacking!!

Cup Stacking has three different categories as Evan and Brody articulate well.  There is 3-3-3 with 9 cups, 3-6-3 with 12 cups and Cycle which involves a different process with 12 cups. Both brothers finished first in their age group in all three categories.

When asked what they liked best about cup stacking, Evan pointed out that "you get to stack them so fast....and I like getting to buy new sets of cups!" While little brother Brody indicated "it's fun doing something that you are really good at." Both young men expressed how glad they were that Mr. Arnett brought the sport to BES. We wish them the very best as they move on in competition. We are proud they will represent our school and community in such a fun activity. If you missed the first Tournament at BES, you can see photos from the event on our website here and video from the event on our YouTube channel here.
Superintendent's Corner
There has been much conversation of late about the amount of standardized testing expected of today's Ohio students. Some small pockets of testing have already taken place, however, the bulk of state mandated tests will given between mid-March and mid-May.

In addition to the list of grade level and content test being given this year, each junior in the state of Ohio will be given the college ACT entrance exam. As you can see from this chart, traditionally Brookville has had one of the largest percentages of students in area schools take the ACT.

We understand that testing is a high stakes process and can put unnecessary pressure on children. However, we also see the need for accountability and measuring the success of our efforts. District Test Coordinator, Mrs. Anyanwu, says " Testing is a lot like the 'big game', this is the time that students get to show what they know. The preparation has happened all year, with each and every learning activity. Our teachers, staff and parents do an amazing job of balancing these, and when our students do their best on these tests, that will show."

Mrs. Anyanwu went on to point out, "We believe we have prepared students for success. We know the importance of these tests and with a positive attitude, our students will do well. Now, just like the "big game", students need a good night's sleep, breakfast and encouragement to do their best."

Thus the testing season begins. We ask for the support of parents and grandparents as we enter this critical time. As a school district we have great confidence that our children will do their very best.

Going to Law School
Eighth Graders Study the Constitution
Ms. Jennifer Howard's eighth grade social studies classes recently used a law school simulation to study how the Constitution created a more perfect Union.

The "law school" activity began with students working in cohort groups of four to learn about six fundamental Constitution related topics.  The groups researched: the Legislative branch, Executive branch, Judicial branch, Checks and Balances, Amendments and the Federal System. For each of these topics the students completed introductory reading and note-taking. They were then required to use the constitution to find answers to questions while referencing Article and Section number citations. Completing this part of the activity was called the Constitution Law or "Bar Exam".

When students completed the Bar Exam they participated in a law school graduation ceremony in which they earned the rank of practicing lawyer.  After graduation, the lawyers formed their own law firms and participated in a competition of Constitutional knowledge. Here students applied what they had learned to solving Constitutional dilemmas.  The only resource allowable was a copy of the Constitution itself.

In addition to an effective method of studying the Constitution, this lesson also met a district goal of connecting students to possible careers.  We congratulate these students on passing the Bar Exam and hope that if they so choose, someday they may actually practice law!
Blue Devil Athletics
Since the last Blue Connector , BHS athletics have enjoyed some outstanding individual performances and one outstanding team tournament run. Here is an overview of Blue Devil winter sports success:

Wrestling -  Two of our grapplers survived one of the toughest sectionals in the state to compete in the District Division III Wrestling Tournament. First, at 113 lbs., junior Devin Miller advanced to districts where he won one match. Devin enjoyed an outstanding season finishing 27-13.  We look forward to him returning next year. Also, at 160 lbs., senior Landon Armbruster progressed to the district tournament. After opening the tournament with a hard fought 8-4 loss, Landon won his next two matches before elimination. Landon finished the season with a record of 31-10 and served as a leader on what was a young team. We appreciate the contribution Landon has made to our wrestling program.

Swimming -  February 23, sophomore Emma Swabb continued to build on her legacy as a Blue Devil swimmer. Having been the first swimmer in school history to advance to the state swim meet as a freshman, Emma became a two-time state qualifier in her sophomore year. Her success is highlighted by the fact that this year she qualified in the 200 IM a different event than last year. Swabb's versatility in the pool continues to shine. We look forward to having her return next year as a dominant force in area swimming.

Boys Basketball -  Records are being broken and new standards are being established for Blue Devil basketball. Our cagers have now set a new school record with 21 wins and will play this Thursday, March 9 at 5:30 pm in the District Finals. The game will be against Summit Country Day out of Cincinnati and will be played at the University of Dayton Arena. This team is led by eight seniors who have all contributed over the course of the season.

Brookville was a third seed in super-sectional which includes four different sectional tournaments. The Blue Devils opened the tournament with a 52-37 win over Dayton Northridge. They met an old rival in the second round when Dixie was the challenge. Having already beat the Greyhounds once this season they proved no challenge at tournament time. Final score Brookville 55 Dixie 19! Most recently, last Saturday, the boy's in blue eliminated Springfield Northeastern 53-41 in front of a delighted following in the sectional final.

Thursday night will certainly be a formidable foe as Summit Country Day comes to UD Arena with a 24-0 record. However, building on a historic season, our Blue Devils hope to create their own March Madness!!

Local Chapter Celebrates National FFA Week
Each year member students and their respective chapters celebrate National FFA Week.  This is a time where the Future Farmers of America organization is highlighted and activities are held to emulate and show the program attributes.

The Brookville High School-Miami Valley CTC Chapter certainly packed a lot of thought and fun into celebrating different sectors of agriculture.  Dress up days that ranged from 'FFA Gear Day' to 'Dress Like Your Ag Teacher Day' kept everyone in the spirit.  Activities held throughout the week included an egg toss, stick horse race, drive your tractor to school day, and an agriculture olympics day which included simulations of steer roping, bale toss, milk chugging and sheep herding.  All of these activities allowed members to focus on the positive elements of agricultural education and its importance in our country today.

Vo Ag teacher, Mr. Wright, commented " this shines a positive light on an industry that may not be completely understood by the entire student body.... Whether or not our students know it agriculture is a huge industry in our area, 46% of all occupations tie directly to ag production in some way. And, living in a rural area, that percentage only increases."

The FFA program will not be slowing down anytime soon. Students will participate in numerous competitions in March. They have finished contests in public speaking and job interviewing. Their annual FFA Banquet and Dessert auction will take place next Saturday night and then attention will turn to planning for the May Farm on the Lawn and State Convention!

School Calendars for the Next Three Years are Set
At the February 20, Board of Education meeting, a resolution was passed approving the school year calendars for 2017-18; 2018-19; and, 2019-20. Brookville and most other school districts typically operate on a three year cycle.

The calendars were drafted by a committee which included students, parent and staff representatives. Once the calendar options were developed, the total staff, and then the Board of Education provided input regarding the dates presented. At the February BOE meeting, the Board took action to approve the calendars.

You can find this year's calendar and the next 3 year's calendars on our website here One note of caution is that staff in-service times such as STAR days (early release) have only been set for the 2017-18 year and not the final two years.
High Five's
Mike Lindsey and Mark Richardson
At halftime of the last home basketball game the school district and those in attendance recognized two long time contributors to our athletic department and school district.

After a 38 year commitment, Mark Richardson did his last public address announcement of a home Blue Devil basketball game. Mark has been the voice of Brookville basketball dating back to the late 70's. He has also served as a school board member and on the Athletic Hall of Fame committee.  A 1977 graduate of Brookville he has certainly given back to his alma mater. We wish him the best in the future.

Mike Lindsey was shown great appreciation that night as well as he will retire at the end of this school year. Mike has been Brookville's athletic director the last 13 years. He has taught and coached in Brookville Schools since the fall of 1974. As a 1970 graduate of Brookville, like Mark, he has dedicated a lifetime to Brookville Schools. His commitment to his work, the school district and the youth of this community has been exemplary. We wish Mike all the best in the future.
