Administrative Professionals Day Recognized
Highly Visible and Highly Thought Of
In numbers, they are one of the smaller employee support groups. However, they are highly visible and very instrumental in the operation of our school district. Twelve ladies were shown appreciation April 26 on  Administrative Professionals Day.

Their careers at Brookville Local vary in length greatly; from Rhonda Haynes, general assistant to the treasurer, who has worked in the district for 30 years, to Wanda Denlinger, the new Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, who just completed her third full week.  Length of service varies between these two from elementary secretary, Laura Staggs, 2 years to intermediate school secretary, Karen Boehringer, who has been with the district 18 years.

Ten of the twelve live in the Brookville School District.  Five currently have children attending school here and  six others have children who have graduated from Brookville Schools. Only Amy Muhlenkamp, whose daughter is still preschool age doesn't have a child either in our schools or a graduate. To go a step further, high school secretary, Kim Hogue has a daughter, Erin Haydon teaching in our schools!!

These ladies go to great effort each and every day to serve the administrators they work with, to providing needed help and direction to parents and grandparents and most importantly, to supporting the children of our school district. They are often the first line of communication with community and the glue that keeps our operations together and on track. They serve as accountants, counselors, journalist, strategist and a host of jobs in between.

When asked what they liked best about their job, veteran secretary Karen Boehringer said, "Every day is different, there is NEVER a dull moment and the students are great!" Elementary secretary, Julie Caylor commented, "Spending the day with children will make anyone's day. You never know what they will say.  And, it's always something you don't expect!  Working with my co-workers always makes for a great day!"  The newest member of this team, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent Wanda Denlinger, may have summed it up for all of them when she said, "Knowing that the work I do benefits the entire community of Brookville."

We say thank you to all of these ladies for their tremendous support to our schools!

Prom Promise Sets Sobering Stage for Weekend
Friday, April 21, leading into prom weekend, the BHS SADD organization sponsored our Prom Promise program.  A beautiful afternoon allowed for the student body to view a mock crash.  The mock crash was part of the Drive Smart Program through Premier Health.  SADD advisors Mrs. Herbert and Mr. Lamb began meeting with Mandy Via of Premier Health back in the Fall of 2016.  As prom weekend approached, Ms. Via continued to coordinate with these advisors and also met with the SADD Club members to plan the impactful program.

Local entities, such as Chief Ron Fletcher from the Brookville Fire Department, Englewood Truck & Towing and Gilbert Fellers Funeral Home also played important roles in sponsoring and providing support to the mock crash. The Brookville Police Department and Clay Township Police Department were on hand and played a significant role as well.

The program centered around a mock crash that displayed how injury and even death can b
e the result of making bad decisions and getting into a vehicle.  Care Flight was on the scene and allowed our students to see first hand the devastation of such a crash.

Our student body watched intently and took the events of the program very seriously.  This led into what was a safe, accident free prom night.  We appreciate the efforts of our SADD Club, their advisors, our partners at Premier Health and the local businesses and agencies that made this a meaningful and educational activity.

We encourage you to view the mock crash pictures here and see videos of the mock crash event here.

SADD CLUB Holds After Prom

We would like to thank the BHS SADD Club for hosting the After Prom this year. Community support of this program was phenomenal. The club received $2,300 in donations from local businesses for After Prom activities. Along with the monetary donations, organizations and eateries gave hundreds of dollars worth of food, gift cards, coupons, Dayton Dragons tickets and other prizes for the After Prom attendees.  At the end of the evening, in the wee hours of the morning, a drawing resulted in four lucky attendees being given either one of two Chromebooks or one of two $300 Visa Cards.
Creating a safe environment for our students to hang out and enjoy themselves as part of Prom Night is wonderful in itself.  Our local community pitching in with these special gifts for those in attendance is another example of how our youth are supported.

5th Graders Visit Yaskawa Motoman
Field Trip is Eye Opener to Robotics and Career
"Our 5th grade field trip was breathtaking!", wrote Laura Robbins. "There were robotic arms that could pick up things, and robots that could weld." She added that, "There were even robots that worked in harmony.......and slowed down when they sensed humans!"

That was the general reaction by the BIS students that traveled to the Yaskawa Motoman Robotics Center. They were able to see first hand how robots are being built, programmed and used in order to make the world of industry and manufacturing more efficient.  Zoe Gross stated that, "It was an amazing opportunity to be able to learn about robots and what you have to do to get them to move and work."

The field trip is a part of career exploration provided by the fifth grade teachers.  Miss Huelskamp commented that taking the students on this field trip, "allowed them exposure to marketing, sales, engineering and coding all at one time."  The list went on to include welders who build welding robots and other skilled trade areas.

Students were excited to see how coding, a skill they learn in the BIS STEAM class, can be used in real world jobs.  The teachers also pointed out that often when children hear about robots, they picture robotic people as opposed to just a robotic arm or device.  "It was good for them to see what "robotics" in the world of manufacturing really looks like," stated Mrs. Blakesly.

In all, the Yaskawa Motoman field trip was a wonderful experience for this group of 10 year olds. Thinking now about the world of workplace opportunities can only benefit their education moving forward.
An Athletic Potpourri
DRIVE 4 UR SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL

Despite a morning of hard rain, thunder and lightening, the Brookville Athletic Department had a successful fundraising experience Saturday, April 29.  In partnership with Beau Townsend and the Ford Motor Company the district held another Drive 4 Ur School event. Approximately 150 individuals attended the event taking a spin in one or two new Ford vehicles.  After the lunch hour the weather cleared up and a steady number of drivers were on hand. Through a monetary donation by Ford, the athletic department will collect funds for each post drive survey. While the final tally is not completed we anticipate that roughly $4,000 will be earned from the event. Many thanks to the coaches, parents, staff and students who helped work the event. Also, thanks to all those who came out to drive. Our athletic department benefitted greatly from this event!!

May 1st Means Flag Raising
Elementary School Continues the Tradition ...
Here is a story we never tire of reporting. The multitude of alumni out there will be glad to hear that decades later the annual May 1, Flag Raising still takes place.  This year was a little wet because of rain and the ceremony was somewhat adjusted. Despite the dampness, 3rd grade safety patrol member Erin Moler stepped to the flagpole surrounded by VFW members and proudly raised the American Flag.  We appreciate the Brookville VFW Post 3288 for seeing this event come to fruition each and every year.  Post 3288 has long been great supporters of our school district and the children of Brookville. Thank you to Erin and all the safety patrol members who played a role in this years activity.  You can see some pictures of the Flag Raising
here .
