Superintendent's Welcome Back to School Message
books_laptop_apple.jpg
It's that time again!  The heat and humidity of August can only mean one thing - time for another school year.  Brookville Schools are ready to welcome students on Wednesday, August 17, 2016.

One of my favorite facets of the school environment is that every year you have a fresh start. Unlike many other businesses and service providers, our primary stakeholders - children and parents - see one year come to an end, they have an opportunity to break from routine and then sense the excitement of a new beginning.

New tennis shoes, backpacks and haircuts will be the norm that first week. While most will grumble and few will admit to it, the majority of students are ready to get back to school; and we are certainly ready. The buildings have been cleaned, touch up painting completed, computers rebooted and buses gassed up. There is a charge in the air as the time draws near.

This edition of the Blue Connector is focused on providing you with some important dates and web site links to inform you about what is happening in the next two weeks as we lead up to the start of school.

We wish to welcome all of our students and staff back to Brookville Schools and we are excited for a great year!

When Teachers Learn
There is an old adage that you cannot change the tires on a car when it is going down the highway. Likewise, it is less than ideal for administrators and teachers to learn and stay abreast of innovative ideas in classroom instruction during the school year. That is why in early June, several of our teachers, all of the building administrators and the superintendent participated in a two-day conference regarding Project Based Learning. This instructional model (typically referred to as "PBL") allows students to show what they have learned, enhances interaction and collaboration and even promotes self and peer assessment. Once a project is complete, there should be a very clear relevancy between what has been learned and how a student will be able to use the knowledge in today's world.

In the last year our teachers were asked to introduce a PBL approach in their classrooms. While a number of our teachers used this model of instruction in past years, for others it was new. The conference, led by Wright State University and the Dayton Regional Stem School, gave a clearer training to the development of PBL units, the feedback cycle to be used between students and the process of allowing a meaningful way for students to show their work. Our school district hopes to continue a shift toward PBL as a commonly recognized teaching culture. As parents, grandparents and caregivers you should begin to see this exhibited.

The teachers and administrators who took advantage of this professional development were fortunate to pull the car off the side of the road and change the tires. The intent is that this is one more opportunity to add both rigor and relevance to each child's education.
Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

Our profiles have taken a break for the summer, but we are ready to bring it back in full force beginning with our August 22, 2016 edition! In the meantime, view our past profiles on our  website.
Transportation and Food Service Information
The Buses and Cafeterias Are Getting Ready
Transportation:

Our buses are all clean and shiny and ready to pick up the eager learners who will be coming to Brookville Local Schools. Mr. Requarth and Mrs. Willoughby in the transportation office have been hard at work scheduling the bus routes.

If you have not changed residences and your child is attending the same building as last year you can expect bus pick-up and drop-off to be generally the same. If your schedule has changed (3rd grader moving to 4th) or you are at a new location (moved, new to the district or kindergarten), you should have received a letter giving you pick-up and drop-off times.  WE WOULD LIKE TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT BUSSES ARE GENERALLY BEHIND SCHEDULE THE FIRST 2-3 DAYS OF SCHOOL. The kinks are typically worked out after a few days and routes are adjusted when necessary.

We encourage you to take advantage of our school bussing. There truly is no safer way to travel to and from school. A tip would be that if you intend to transport your child by personal vehicle you leave plenty of time. Back up lines can often be lengthy. School start and end times can be found at our website:  www.brookvilleschools.org.  You will also find times for non-traditional days such as STAR days. Questions can should be directed to the Transportation Center at 833-4724 or your child's building office. school

Food Service:

Food Service is another department that is geared up and ready for school. Plate lunch prices remain the same as last year: $3.05 (BIS/BHS) and $2.80 (BES). Depending on your child's age there are also ala carte items available.

Parents should also be aware that our cafeteria provides a breakfast option to students each morning. The cafeteria is open before the tardy bell with quick breakfast options. We encourage parents to pre-load their child's lunch account which can be accomplished by paying at the school office or cafeteria in advance or through a PayForIt.Net account. Your child receives a pin number to pay for meals electronically and you can receive statements from PayForIt to keep up-to-date on their spending.

Remember that hungry students are often distracted learners. Help your child in the classroom by taking advantage of the school breakfast and lunch program. You can access the lunch menus online for BIS/BHS and BES
High Five's

The "Gentlemen of Fall" started their regular season play at the annual Ryder Cup on Thursday, August 4th. The Blue Devils varsity golf team placed 2nd overall with Seniors Blake Mullennix and Cody Cox taking a 1st place in their pairing. Congratulations and good luck to our golfers as they continue their season!
