Eighth Grade DC Trip Goes Well
New Itinerary Stops and Excellent Weather Highlights
Taking 120 fourteen year olds on a three day bus trip might  not sound like your idea of fun, but BIS Principal Mr. Erin Wheat and eighth grade social studies teacher Ms. Jen Howard both described the most recent trip to Washington D.C. by our eighth graders as excellent.  "Everything just went so smoothly," commented Ms. Howard.  She went on to mention that "we had a full itinerary and each stop was on schedule."

The trip departed at 10:15 pm Monday, March 27 in a driving rain.  However, after that, both leaders pointed to excellent weather making the visit pleasant.  Highlights were numerous.  The group had a timed entrance to the Capitol Building and tickets to the Holocaust Museum (which isn't a year-to-year guarantee).  After visiting the Marine Memorial, a new stop this year was to the Air Force Memorial.  This just opened in 2006 and offered a breathtaking view of where the Pentagon was attacked on September 11, 2001.  Following the Air Force Memorial, the students visited Arlington Cemetery and four of our students participated in the Wreath Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Mr. Wheat chuckled when he spoke about the group getting an opportunity to ride the Washington D.C. metro.  This common mode of transportation in a large city is quite uncommon for our Brookville students.  Mr. Wheat commented, "there were a lot of wide eyes on the metro ride!"

As always the trip is wrapped, before and after, with classroom studies relevant to the experience. Ms. Howard pointed out that much work is put in so that the students know what they should expect to hear and see when touring Washington D.C.  "This really allows them to be a better audience," she pointed out.  Upon return from spring break the group will be heavy into their second Progress Based Learning experience which reflects on much of what the students encountered.  The PBL experience will be centered around the essential question of "How does Washington D.C. exemplify the American ideals of freedom, equality, rights and justice?"  You can view the project overview here .

A gallery of pictures from the eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. can be seen  here .  Mr. Wheat encourages you to visit his twitter account @BISdevils to see pictures from the trip.  We appreciate the many staff that take time to make this a meaningful experience.  Most important, we want to thank our students.  Both Mr. Wheat and Ms. Howard commented that Brookville could be VERY proud of how well behaved our students were. Sounds like a good time was had by all!!
Superintendent's Corner
Brookville Elementary Teacher Will Spend Summer in Faroe Islands
"It's a very exciting opportunity," beams Katie Bigelow, a BES teacher who will travel to the Faroe Islands this July.  Ms. Bigelow will travel with 4 eleven year olds from Miami County and meet eleven year olds from 11 other countries for a summer learning experience at the islands located off the coast of Northern Europe, about halfway between Iceland and Norway.

In total, 48 students and 12 teachers from around the world will spend July at a school on the Island to study and learn around a curriculum based on Just & Peaceful World Education.  The opportunity is a function of the Children's International Summer Village.  The organization was started by a professor at the University of Cincinnati and there is a strong branch in Miami County.

The group of 11 year olds and their instructors will meet in the Faroe Islands this July.  It is somewhat of a 'camp style' month according to Ms. Bigelow. As one of the visiting teachers, she will be delivering unit lessons on peace education, human rights, conflict resolution, sustained resources and cultural understanding.  Ms. Bigelow has been through a local leader training and later this spring will travel for national training.

We are very excited to have a teacher that will enjoy such a wonderful overseas experience.  We are sure it will benefit Katie upon her return to BES.  If you would like to know more about the Children's International Summer Village opportunities, you can visit their website cisvmiamicounty.org .

We invite you to take a moment to watch the video which highlights some of the exciting things that are coming up in the next few weeks at Brookville Local Schools.

Jumping Rope with a Mission
Mr. Arnett's Initiative Hits Milestones
It all started in the 2002-2003 school year.  Elementary Physical Education teacher, Alan Arnett had been asked on several occasions by the American Heart Association to participate in Jump Rope for the Heart.  Having attended several conventions where the program was highlighted and looking to expand and add variety to his instruction, Mr. Arnett bought in. While he realizes his students are still too young to totally grasp the concept, Mr. Arnett talks to the kids about understanding that the prizes they earn are fun but they are working to help the Heart Association and those in need of heart health.

What this teacher finds most amazing is the outpouring of support provided by the parents and residents of this community.  "It doesn't matter what it has been over the years," quipped Arnett, "the people of this community have been so giving and supportive."  The veteran teacher went on to point out "I've done snow skiing, cup stacking, jump rope for the heart, an indoor ice skating surface, you name it and people have pitched in to support the initiative."  He went on to add, "I know we can't take that support for granted. It doesn't happen everywhere."

Jump Rope for the Heart has evolved over the last 15 years.  On the day of the event, students used to just jump rope.  Now there are a variety of activities.  You can see a gallery of pictures and videos from this years participation here .  And, this year was a stellar year.  Grades 1,2 and 3 were involved and Mr. Arnett stated that approximately 155 children chose to collect donations.  That involves approximately 50% of the students from those grades.  This year the children collected $10,200 for the American Heart Association, bringing the 15 year total to $108,000 that Brookville Elementary has raised.  While the total collected was not a new annual record, one student, first grader Garrett Schuck did set a new individual student record by collecting $1,000!!

We commend Garrett for contributing so well and congratulate Mr. Arnett for another successful year of support to the American Heart Association.

Young & Talented - BHS Track & Field Team Starts Season Strong
BHS Head Track & Field Coach, John Barrera, excitedly points out, "we're young, but our teams are working hard and doing a great job".  The coaches comments were coming one day after watching his team perform well at home in the opening meet of the year.  With 45 student athletes nearly evenly divided between boys and girls, this year's team consist of only two seniors. One female, Deanna Winner and one male, Isaac Wright. However, the team is buoyed by a strong junior class that has taken on a supporting role of leadership.

In the March 28th quad meet, the girls team was led by first place finishes from the following:  Holly Northcutt - 200 meter, Emilie Penick - mile, Grace Monnig - 2 mile and Alaina Good - shot put & discus.  The boys team was led by the following first place finishers:  Bailey Wallen - 100 and 200 meter, Justin Bland - mile, Arian Terry - 300 meter hurdles, Spencer Schick - 800 meter and Jeremy Page in the 2 mile.  The team also had many other 2nd and 3rd place finishes.  You can see all the results of this meet here . While coach Barrera pointed out the strong finishes by many of his returning athletes, he especially commended Arian Terry, a freshman who is fearless in the 300 meter hurdles.

You can view their entire Track and Field schedule here .  Of note are the Wayne Invitational, one of the premier track meets in Ohio and then our SWBL Meet.  The boys hope to make a run at the championship after finishing 2nd last year and the girls young team hopes to improve upon their finish as well.  We congratulate our thinclads on their successes to this point and wish them the best the remainder of the season.
Drive Smart - - The Ford Line is Coming
A Quick and Easy Way to Support School Programs
Mark your calendars, set a reminder on Siri, call on a neighbor, family member or friend to join you.  Once again, through Beau Townsend Ford, Brookville Schools are being invited to participate in the generous fundraising day called Drive Smart .  The date is Saturday, April 29, from 9am to 3pm in the high school bus lot.

This will be the fourth Drive Smart Day hosted by Brookville Schools.  It truly is one of the easiest, less painful, no cost ways that you can help us raise money.  You simply have to show up and drive a new car around the school building.  You pull into the school lot, fill out a form, test drive a couple of cars, answer a survey and you're off.  Two things to keep in mind - you must be 18 with a valid driver's license and only 1 driver from each home address can register.

Doesn't cost you a penny, no sales pitch or annoying follow up phone calls. The school program receives $20 per test drive and an additional $10 for those who drive the "bonus" car.  If we hit our limit on drivers we can raise up to $8,000 in one day with NO OUT OF POCKET DONATION FROM YOU!!!   The Ford Motor Company is making all the monetary donation to the school for your effort!!

What is exciting about this year?  In the past three Drive Smart events we have presented the Lincoln vehicles.  This year we will have the Ford cars and trucks at the school for test driving!  No registration is needed.  You can ask those that have participated in the past; you will be in and out in 15 minutes.  So, plan now and join us.  This years funds will go to the Athletic Department.  We need YOU!  Help us raise $8,000 in one day and spend NO MONEY.  Watch for future announcements.

Hat Day / High School Staff and Students
Displaying a culture of "One For All and All For One", the BHS staff and students recently rallied around one of their own.  Junior, Travis McColloch was recently diagnosed with cancer and when he shaved his head because of hair loss, the student body showed support by wearing hats to school as part of #travisstrong efforts. Staff members made donations in order to wear a hat and dress down that day.  Staff showed their support by donating over $400 to help Travis and his family through this time of treatment.  We say, stay strong Travis and thank you staff and students for your show of support. You can view Hat Day pictures here .
