The BPP is pleased to welcome two newest members to the Board of Directors.
Elizabeth Sames is an Independent Nonprofit Management Professional, Chair of the Laredo Area Community Foundation and a life-long devoted volunteer, community leader and philanthropist in the Laredo, TX area. The Sames roots run deep in South Texas. For generations the Sames have lead in industry and civic life in the Laredo area. Since 2002, Hank and Elizabeth Sames have supported the Sames Scholars Program at Texas A&M International University. The program has helped a number of students with tuition and technical support. In 2005, Elizabeth launched, Driven for Success, with Laredo Independent School District, the project selects two classrooms or student organizations per month and provides funds for a special effort.
Maria Elena Giner has served as the general manager of the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) since October 2010. Ms. Giner is a civil engineer with more than 20 years of experience in the private and public sectors focusing on development and implementation of environmental infrastructure projects. She has also held the positions of project manager, director of technical assistance, director of operations and deputy general manager at BECC. Prior to joining BECC, Ms. Giner served in several positions at the California Department of Transportation, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Carollo Engineers, a private consulting firm.

The San Diego Foundation has released data from its ShowYourLoveSD.org survey, allowing online access to view the information from the more than 30,000 responses from people representing diverse demographics including age, ethnicity and geography. The feedback from the community regarding issues ranging from education, community and cultural amenities, jobs and economic growth, to future land use and planning scenarios for San Diego, will help The San Diego Foundation craft the best Vision possible from the data that encompasses our shared values, priorities and voices. more
Santa Cruz Community Foundation celebrates its annual Folklorico. With more life, color, music and magic seen on this historic site since the Anza expedition left in 1774 to found the California missions and San Francisco, on Saturday, April 28th, the Santa Cruz Community Foundation (SCCF) welcomed guests to the annual Folklórico event at the historic Tubac Presidio, a location steeped in the history of Southern Arizona and Northern Mexico. This year, the spotlight was on the colorful history of Santa Cruz Valley's colonial days, celebrated by a crowd of over 300 sprinkled with guests in authentic colonial costume and a tour of the 1691 Presidio.

Last Thursday a fire broke out at the Hotel San Enrique in Nogales, Sonora, directly across the street from the Morley Avenue pedestrian port of entry. In response, firefighters from Nogales, Ariz., set up on International Street on the U.S. side of the fence and used their 101-foot ladder truck to reach over the barrier and spray the burning building.

UPCOMING EVENTS
As part of a Border Trade Policy and Promotion Week, beginning June 4, 2012, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce Michael Camuñez will lead a U.S. government delegation making stops at key destinations for cross-border commercial activity along the U.S.-Mexico border. The express purpose of the delegation, which will be joined by a private sector delegation led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is to highlight priorities for enhancing cross-border commercial ties and related economic growth and job creation. In particular, this is an opportunity to help shape the 2013 iteration of the U.S.-Mexico Border Management Action Plan that is already underway for 2012. more

FAMILY ASSET BUILDING
CFED released findings from research that explores whether or not parents will be strong stewards of their children's savings accounts (CSAs), or if they will use funds in such accounts for unintended purposes. The white paper, authored by Carl Rist, Brigitte Gavin and Sean Luechtefeld, is titled Take the Money and Run? Investigating Whether Parents Will Raid Children's Savings Accounts: A Case Study in Non-Qualified Withdrawals and is now available for download at CFED's Knowledge Center. more

HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT
A Leadership for Healthy Communities (a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) report "Making the Connection: Linking Policies that Prevent Hunger and Childhood Obesity," asserts that policymakers can address significant safety concerns, promote livable communities, and reduce childhood obesity rates by implementing policies that can improve both the adequacy of a neighborhood's built environment and implications and perceptions of neighborhood crime. more
A Salud America! report titled "Built Environment Policy for Physical Activity in Mexican-American Children," affirms that in order to create and promote environments that support physical activity, especially among children at high risk of obesity, public leaders must pursue strategies that include effective policy changes. more
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced funding of more than $728 million to support 398 health center renovation and construction projects. The awards are part of a series of capital investments that are made available to community health centers under the Affordable Care Act, which provides $9.5 billion to expand services over five years and $1.5 billion to support major construction and renovation projects at community health centers. The United States Department of Agriculture's Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships recently announced their "Together We Can" partnership series on nourishing families.
